View Full Version : Clyde is the Pierce of the 80s. He will not acknowledge anyone as his superior.

On the subject of MJ:
.“I always felt like there was nobody better if I played the way I should have played,” Drexler added. “If I come out and compete, there’s going to be very few guys better. … What I feel like is I can compete with anybody.”
He continued: “The difference is, if you’re taking 35 shots and I’m taking 20, you’re gonna have more points — bottom line. But I’m gonna make you work, and you can’t guard me. So, you look at it from a perspective: I still can do everything I do no matter who’s on me. What can I stop you from doing? … I can make you shoot a worse percentage, make you work for it. And so that’s the way you think, you’re gonna make him earn everything.”
For the record I don’t mind his stance….or Pierces Lebron/Wade thing. A competitor is supposed to go into games that way. I’m not calling him like….a jackass or anything. I’m just saying he’s funny.

Guys at this level will never allow the thought of someone being superior enter their minds, at least to go as far as publicly expressing it. I seem to recall Barkley saying the same, he'd never admit out loud that someone was better.

Nothing wrong with that. Mj clearly had the better career but maybe drex thinks that's just because mj was in a better situation than him.

Pierce wouldn't have said something like "if I played the way I should have played. " He would just tell you he's a good as anybody period.

Drexler is a great example of how big of a difference handles make for a perimeter player.
If he had better handles he would have been immensely better.

The top guys should always have this perspective. And they aren't wrong either, nobody can stop them - that's the honest truth it's not just "their" truth. And they approach players, even MJ, with that mitigation approach the same as they would any other opponent. Nobody not even other top guys shuts down a great player.
They don't hero worship like fans do. Most of the top guys would never be intimidated or be thinking differently of their opponent no matter who it was so I don't see a problem with that take at all.

Guys like that will admit past players are (possibly) better but never one of his peers. And I'm cool with that.

Those are some of the best mental gymnastics I’ve seen. But yeah you can’t hate on him. He’s kinda nutty. It’s funny.

it's as if he's never been scored on while being on the double/triple coverage side

Always think you're the best whether it's against pros or 5 year Olds at the park. Go for blood

He's welcome to do so. For my part, I'm gonna acknowledge plenty of players as his (and Pierce's) superiors. Neither of us will have to care in the slightest what the other thinks and we'll all just have to learn to live our lives in that world as adults.

If you on a good day can outplay anyone than this is what many will believe. This is true even outside basketball. People's assessment of their own abilities is of when they're at their best but we rarely give others that same benefit.

Clyde was a great player but he wasn't in the same zip code as MJ. His handles were pretty limited relative to other great players.

And MJ said this, and I quote: "Clyde Drexler is just as good as me. He just don’t know how to play the game. And we ain’t talking about basketball.”
