For an updated player pool and vote breakdowns see the link (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ARaI3VCNauULLYL1Yu24HIRY768FYQdip56sp6uRFGk/edit?usp=sharing).

Everyone may post in this thread but only votes from serious contributors will be considered. Not everyone has to write an essay but there should be some justification or explanation and some coherent arguments being presented. I encourage people to be open-minded and willing to adjust their rankings in response to strong evidence. Debate and discussion is encouraged.

This is the point where voting takes the form of picking names out of a hat.

Looks like its Jason Kidd vs John Stockton

Checking some arguments for

John Stockton finished 7th in MVP voting at his peak and was all-nba 1st team twice in a 20 year career

You can't go wrong with either player. Stockton was one of the most durable players in NBA history. He played for 19 seasons and played 82 games in 16 of those seasons. Stockton also holds records as the All-Time steals and assists leader. Stockton is also one of the greatest shooters in NBA history.

Jason Kidd is 9x All-Defense and second all-time assists leader. Kidd entered the league 10 seasons after Stockton so they never really faced each other at their peak (as Kidd played against prime GP, Nash, CP3, Deron Williams, etc).

If I had to choose, I'd give Jason Kidd the slight edge. I just don't think that John Stockton could've carried those Nets teams to two consecutive finals. I also witnessed Stockton play mediocre in two Finals alongside Karl Malone who he played with for 18 seasons. Kidd never played with anyone as good as Karl Malone until he was 34 years old. Kidd was amazing defensively in 2011 playoffs while also playing the prototypical PG role.

It's very close, but I'd give Kidd the slight edge. I believe Kidd and the Jazz could at least replicate the same success as Malone/Stockton (although Stockton was a little better in the P&R), but Stockton wouldn't be able to replicate two consecutive Finals appearance as the best player on the team. It's all hypothetical so we'll never know. I'm simply basing this off my observations

Stockton. It’s not close.

If you go by Win Shares, Stockton’s career was worth about 1.5 of Kidd’s, in 100 more games.

He blows Kidd away on O-rating, and gives only a little back on D-rating. Kidd’s a worthy Hall of Famer. Stockton’s in the conversation for greatest point guard of all time.

I am voting Jason Kidd.

I am surprised Iverson didn't get any mentions yet. Because he is a legend.

I'll go for Stockton. I'm honestly undecided who's better between him and Kidd in their primes so I'll go for Stockton's edge in longevity and his assists and steals stat records.

Probably due to Nash's shit defense.

Why people forget about McHale? Lead the 86 finals in scoring. Had the most inventive moves in the post. Very good defender only player on the 60-40-80 club i believe.

He's solid top 50-60 but I think 36 is too early for McHale.

I voted Iverson at 35 first but changed the vote because it was down to Cousy and Stockton.

Not really that impressed with Kidd making the Finals when the East was at its all time weakest. Put those Nets teams in the West and there is a very good chance they dont make it out of the first round.

Well in 2003 Nest swept Pistons in the conferrence finals and we know what happened a yaer later, so the east was not so weak.

That year Kidd was 20/8/8/2 in the playoffs

The East was incredibly weak. The Pistons were the 1 seed with only 50 wins and needed a 3-1 comeback just to get out of the first round :lol And those Pistons were not the same team that won the title the next year, they didn't have Sheed and Prince was a rookie off the bench.

He has ONE All-NBA team. And came off the bench the majority of his career.
