Gobert isn’t a unique player. He built it around an elite shot blocking 7 footer yes. Now he has two of them and Whiteside has been the better one thus far

After averaging +10.7 last season, Conley has dropped to +6.5 while Gobert has slipped from +10.3 last year to just+3.1 this season.

There are two main reasons for these struggles so far, and they don’t fall entirely on either Jazz All-Stars.


First, the team is missing Georges Niang who was a stellar floor spacer last season knocking down 42 percent of his 4.1 three-point attempts. With Rudy Gay still recovering from off-season heel surgery, the Jazz have turned to Eric Paschall who brings added athleticism and on-ball defense but was shooting just 29 percent from the three-point entering Saturday night.


Second, Jordan Clarkson’s struggles have continued despite his breakout performance in Atlanta as the sixth man is still shooting just 22 percent from the three-point line. Clarkson followed up his brilliant performance with a rough seven point performance on 3-9 shooting while failing to grab a rebound or hand out an assist.


Without either Paschall or Clarkson adding any shot creation for the Jazz third unit, the team simply doesn’t have enough offense to extend the advantage gained when Mitchell is on the floor.

To make matters worse against Miami, Joe Ingles also managed just three points on 1-4 shooting as he struggled to find shots against the Heat defense, resulting in just 21 points off the bench on 8-20 shooting.


At the end of the game, Conley had the best plus-minus of the third group at a -3, but Ingles -10,Paschall’s -17, Gobert’s -20, and Clarson’s -27 in a three point game dug the Jazz too deep of a hole to climb out of.

Frankly, the case for Gobert is pretty simple: virtually every advanced metric pegs him as the most important player on the Jazz.


He paces the club in Win Shares (WS) in 2021-22 so far at 1.7. He’s atop the Jazz leaderboard in Box Plus/Minus (BPM) at 5.2. He also leads in Value Over Replacement Player (VORP) at 0.5.


In case you think this is an example of small sample theater, the numbers told the same story in 2020-21. His 11.3 WS led the Utah Jazz by a considerable margin. His 4.5 BPM narrowly edged out Mike Conley’s 4.4. Finally, his VORP of 3.6 was (you guessed it) the highest mark on the team.


None of which should be particularly surprising. Gobert’s presence as a rim protector fundamentally alters opposing teams’ strategies in a way that no other skill possessed by any other Jazzman can. The paint becomes a no fly zone when Gobert is in the middle of it. He effectively removes the best shot in basketball from any team’s diet, which frequently leads to more general offensive breakdowns.


On the offensive end, Gobert is obviously not a featured weapon, but his combination of vertical spacing and elite screen setting is still essential to the Jazz’s plan of attack. It’s a little early in the 2021-22 season to factor Offensive Rating prominently into our equation, but it’s worth noting that Gobert actually led all Jazz starters in that category in 2020-21 at 131.

It’s a convincing argument, but it’s one that we’ll ultimately reject. Advanced metrics are often designed to measure a player’s impact on their team’s success. Sometimes, they can be noisey, but when they’re all pointing in the same direction, they’re usually worth following.

There are simply too many numbers that tell us Rudy Gobert is the most important player on the Utah Jazz for us to accept otherwis
