View Full Version : There's never been a bigger statistical gap between 1st & 2nd option than MJ-pippen

So there's never been a player that defined "sidekick" (lower producer) more than Pippen

Yet there's people saying it's wrong to call Pippen a sidekick.. :biggums:

Pippen wasn't a 1b like most sidekicks (equal-producer to the 1st option) - he was the definition of 2nd option (lower producer)..

Paxson, Kerr and Kukoc were relied on MORE than pippen in all clutch moments or any tight spot in the game.. And Pippen was only a 2nd option alongside Jordan, otherwise he wasn't even that

So you admit your rankings mean nothing? Either you admit you ranked Kobe first despite not actually believing he was (and thus admit your lists arent even necessarily your own opinion) or you admit you don’t think MJ is GOAT. Pick one.

Call a spade a spade

Call a low producer like Pippen a low producer - a sidekick that never got within 10 ppg of Mike in any series

So Jordan led Pippen by 10-30 ppg in every SERIES, while everyone else in history needed a teammate to lead them for entire playoff runs - aka Wade and AD led Lebron in scoring for the 2011 & 2020 playoffs, while Kyrie matched Lebron's ppg in the 16' Playoffs.. or Worthy used to lead Magic/Kareem, or Kobe led Shaq in scoring for various playoff runs, etc, etc, etc

You don’t even have MJ as GOAT who cares?

Start posting about your real hero Kobe. Why are you afraid to admit he’s your guy? Is it because he doesn’t measure up to LeBron?

Teams must maximize their best player, so the best player on a team determines a team's style of play.

Accordingly, style of play must be considered when comparing the best players on 2 teams, not just stats... Stats can be compared directly for 2nd options, but not for the top dogs that determine style of play.

When we consider style of play, we see that Kobe's elite jumpshooting skill yielded the best strategy (ball movement) and better teammate fits, which yielded the best team ceilings/Finals record.. So he's superior to Lebron's ball-dominance, which yields an inferior style of play and lower team ceilings (and crappy teammate fits)

Lebron's super-teams from 2011-2016 were so unfair that KD had to join Curry/Klay to supercede them and stop the deck-stacking Lebron.

Then Lebron had the mostt help possible by being the lower-producing "pippen" in the 2020 Playoffs to AD's scoring champion "jordan" role (AD led NBA in playoff scoring)

So when did Lebron win without the best cast in the league?... When your sidekick destroys the only unanimous league MVP in history or makes you the "pippen", you have literally the most help possible.

Otoh, Kobe won with a weaker cast than the 2008 Spurs, who were defending champs - the Spurs had 3 stars and the Lakers only 2...

Neither Jordan nor Pippen led the Bulls in rebounds - other guys did that

Meanwhile, Jordan averaged more assists and assist percentage than Pippen for their Finals career, Playoff career, and regular season career.

Jordan also got more DPOY votes every year and was considered the better defender.

Kyrie destroyed Curry because LeBron taught him how to be a winner  Unfortunately he forgot as soon as he left LeLeader. LeBron scored at a higher rate than AD in the 2020 playoffs, AD just played more minutes. And since when do you care about people getting outscored? The problem with your analysis is that all of Lebron's sidekicks destroy the league MVP, not just Kyrie because AD killed Joker and Bosh killed Rose - and we know that Lebron didn't elevate them because he himself was being elevated/taught how to win by Wade, while Bosh was killing Rose

And AD infact averaged more PPG than Lebron in the 2020 Playoffs

MJ is #1 all-time in PPG, PER, WS/48, and other key stats while Pippen ranks about 120th in these areas - so there's never been a bigger statistical gap between 1st and 2nd option.. Jordan led Pippen by 10-30 ppg in every series of their career, while everyone else in history needed teammates to lead in scoring for entire playoff runs - i.e. Wade and AD led Lebron in PPG for the 11' and 20' Playoffs, while Kyrie nearly matched Lebron in the 2016 Playoffs..

You have to wonder, MJ would be ringless without Pippen.

First of all, Lebron needed better playmakers than Pippen like Kyrie, Westbrook, Wade and Rondo.

Secondly - Jordan averaged more assists, steals, and blocks during his tenure with Pippen (88-98'), while getting more DPOY votes nearly every year... So stop lying... Jordan averaged more assists than Pippen for their Finals career, Playoff career, and regular season career, while also leading in assists for 6 of 9 playoff runs alongside Pippen (including 3 title runs).

If elite assists were needed (more than 7), Jordan was the only option - he was the only elite playmaker on the Bulls that could average 10+ assists on numerous occasions - he was called the best point guard in the league when he played the position for a stint in 1989 (30/9/11 at point guard)... So again, stop lying.. Pippen was a 16/5/5 bum with weak efficiency - basically half the production of prime Westbrook across the board with the same efficiency..

Furthermore, we have all-encompassing production rate stats to tell the story - there's a bigger gap in PER, WS/48, BPM, and VORP for Jordan/Pippen's 6 title runs than Hakeem/Horry in the 94' Playoffs.. MJ ranks #1 all-time in PPG, PER, WS/48 and other categories, while Pippen ranks about 120th - so there's never been a bigger statistical gap between 1st and 2nd option than MJ/Pippen..

And you're missing the point - Jordan averaged 10-30 more points than Pippen in every series, while Lebron had teammates match or lead him for entire playoff runs (11', 16', 20'), so Jordan lacked the equal-scoring partners that Lebron had - this matters because equal-scoring partners attact equal defensive attention - so only Jordan faced 1-man team defensive coverage for his entire career.. Kenny Smith talks about MJ being the only 1-man show here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UF6Xx3F2Lo&t=01m54s

Ultimately, scoring is what determines if a player is 2nd option, and Pippen one of the worst scorers for a winning sidekick - he had low PPG and Jordan doubled Pippen's PPG in the playoffs (carried Pippen)

* Vernon Maxwell was the Rockets' 2nd leading scorer, so his PPG was used

MJ is #1 all-time in PPG, PER, WS/48, and other key stats while Pippen ranks about 120th in these areas - so there's never been a bigger statistical gap between 1st and 2nd option..

Jordan led Pippen by 10-30 ppg in every series of their career, while everyone else in history needed teammates to match them or lead in scoring for entire playoff runs - i.e. Wade and AD led Lebron in PPG for the 11' and 20' Playoffs, while Kyrie nearly matched Lebron in the 2016 Playoffs.. These equal-scoring partners attract equal defensive attention, so only MJ faced 1-man team defensive coverage for his entire career, as Kenny Smith points out here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UF6Xx3F2Lo&t=114s).
Another guy who had a comparable carryjob was 2015 Curry.:applause:

2015 Steph....... 24.5 PER... 8.8 BPM (led league)... 2.2 VORP (led league)... 0.228 WS/48... 28.3 ppg
2015 Klay.......... 14.8 PER... 1.9 BPM.................... 0.7 VORP..................... 0.118 WS/48... 18.6 ppg
GAP.................. 9.7............ 6.9.......................... 1.5.............................. 0.110.............. 9.7

Kobe won without the best supporting cast in '80-'09. Boston had a better roster.

They sure did. You remember what happened to Boston’s roster in April or so though, right?

First of all, Lebron needed better playmakers than Pippen like Kyrie, Westbrook, Wade and Rondo.

Let it be known that 3ball doesn't know what a playmaker is.

His schtick has run its course. It's wayyyy beyond old. They need to hire someone else with new material.

Career APG

Westbrook..... 8.6
Rondo........... 8.0
Kyrie............ 5.7
Wade............ 5.4
Jordan.......... 5.3
Pippen.......... 5.2

Pippen is the worst playmaker of the group - the only question is which guy is the worst scorer - Pippen or Rondo

We know that Pippen was only a 2nd option alongside MJ, otherwise he wasn't a 2nd option, while Rondo was a 1st option juggernaut dominator while single-handedly destroying Lebron in the 2010 ECSF - so his peak > Pippen's

+1

He's that worn down, washed prize fighting boxer that keeps trying to make a comeback when he doesn't belong in the ring.
