the trolls will think so like every game but as always it's highly unlikely

Even during an off week for the Jazz, Gobert held all opponents to 27-for-88 shooting last week as the closest defender. That’s a 30.7% shooting percentage, or 15.8 percentage points beneath the expected percentage on those shoots based on shot location. The dude is simply dominating. That includes 8-for-32 (25%) at the rim over the last four games, bringing the Stifle Tower’s rim defense figure for the year to an eye-popping 41.9%.

last game a guy that played in garbage time against Whiteside and others supposedly dominated Gobert too :lol

It most definitely kept Gobert happy. On two straight possessions in the first quarter, Ingles easily beat the blitzing pick-and-roll coverage by taking a couple dribbles and then finding Gobert for a dunk. That set the tone for the game with Gobert slamming down eight dunks, just one off his career high.

Chauncey Billups Discusses Rudy Gobert Gobert dominated the Trail Blazers with a 21 point, 16 rebound double-double. Though he had only one block, he made life difficult for Lillard who made an effort to challenge the Jazz in the paint after connecting on just 1-4 threes during the game.
The Jazz star is one of the most unique players in the modern NBA, and historically, there are only a handful of players who have had his impact on the game.

Comparisons to Bill Russell and Dikembe Mutombo are perhaps the most common, but most recently, Ben Wallace has likely been his best comp. Before the game, Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, who won a championship with Wallace in Detroit, discussed the impact Gobert has on the floor.

“Rudy is incredible how he manages that paint down there,” Billups said.

Rudy was a +29 in 31 minutes tonight & shot 81% from the field 😳#PerformanceLeader (https://twitter.com/hashtag/PerformanceLeader?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) | @UofUHealth (https://twitter.com/UofUHealth?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) pic.twitter.com/e84xXLiD3R (https://t.co/e84xXLiD3R)

Wallace was undervalued during his first four seasons in the NBA, going undrafted out of Virginia Union, playing for the Washington Wizards and Orlando Magic before finding a home with the Pistons.

From there, the undersized big man went on to make four All-Star teams, win four Defensive Player of the Year awards, make five All-NBA teams, and six All-Defensive teams before being inducted into the Hall of Fame this past summer.

Now in the midst of his prime, Gobert’s accolades are starting to closely resemble those of Wallace.

Gobert has two All-Star nods, three Defensive Player of the Year awards, four All-NBA appearances, and five All-Defensive team appearances.
By the end of the season, the Jazz center might match Wallace in Defensive Player of the Years awards, and All-NBA/All-Defensive teams appearances, with several years left to surpass the Hall of Famer’s numbers.

“He’s a dominant defender down there,” Billups said of Gobert. “Even shots he doesn’t block he has an impact on. Guys won’t even shoot or they drive and kick it, he’s incredible at what he does.”

If Gobert can amass more end-of-season awards, it’ll help his Hall of Fame caus, though perhaps nothing would help as much as an NBA Championship which Wallace earned in 2004.

Gobert does have an edge on Wallace in international play which the Basketball Hall of Fame will consider at the end of his career, having won a silver medal this summer in Tokyo with the Olympics heading to his native France in 2024.

Regardless, Wallace was one of the most beloved players in recent NBA history due to his incredible defensive presence down low, it’ll be worth monitoring Gobert’s popularity over the second half of his career, and how that may impact his Hall of Fame bid.

wonder if Billups noticed the defensive assignments?

With just under seven minutes on the clock in the first quarter of the Jazz’s 129-107 win over the Blazers, Gobert was switched onto C.J. McCollum and deterred the guard over and over on his attempts to get to the rim. Eventually McCollum abandoned ship and passed the ball off. But Gobert recovered effortlessly onto Robert Covington, forcing him to send a shot over Gobert’s outstretched arms. The ball was sent way too high and bounced off the top of the backboard.

oh but Nurk had a huge game in the blowout loss!:oldlol:

Rudy Gobert played absolutely wonderfully against the Blazers and was a huge part of the Jazz being able to keep Damian Lillard to just 11 points on the night. On display was classic shot-altering and recovery that we’ve all come to expect from Gobert, but what I found most impressive was his positioning on rebounds. He finished with 21 points, 16 rebounds and three assists. He got a ton of lobs and put-backs and was able to kick out to open shooters because of where he kept bodies in control around him.

“Just try to make his life a little harder with drives and driving him into me pretty much. Make sure we don’t give up easy 3’s.” — Rudy Gobert on the defensive plan against Damian Lillard

Do you think Gobert knows his defensive assignment?

Last Monday, Gobert blocked Damian Lillard for the 19th time in their 29 career head-to-head games. That makes Dame the player Gobert has swatted the most — tied with Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns, whom Gobert will see this week.

Gobert dominated early and had an unreal impact on the scoreboard (+46.0 per 100 possessions). Since the start of last season, players have gone for 21 and 16 on 80% from the field or better just 13 times — three of them were Gobert games. Gobert being asked to guard a little differently was also a huge part of holding Damian Lillard to 11 points on 12 shots.
