Numbers and film keep proving the point: Gobert is more than capable (https://twitter.com/kirkgoldsberry/status/1465347968333225989) as a 1-on-1 defender all over the court now. He’s Utah’s best defender on isolations (https://www.nba.com/stats/players/isolation/?SeasonType=Regular%20Season&TypeGrouping=defensive&CF=TEAM_ABBREVIATION*E*uta&sort=PPP&dir=-1) this season, and that’s just based on imperfect play type tracking that only looks at outcomes and therefore doesn’t capture the myriad U-turns or pass-outs that Gobert’s enveloping defense tends to inspire.

Rudy Gobert is a great rebounder — he finished with 20 boards in what Snyder called a "dominant" performance (without him, the last possession would have been meaningless; the Cavs would have already won) — but Bojan Bogdanovic, Royce O'Neale, Mitchell and Conley aren't the tallest NBA players. Advantage: Cleveland.

The Jazz blew a 15 point fourth quarter lead, but the play of Rudy Gobert down the stretch allowed the team to hold on late.

Thanks Donovan?

Cleveland has done a nice job erasing Rudy Gobert as a scorer, and he had just four points on 2-5 shooting, but it’s come at the cost of Mitchell, Royce O’Neale, and Bojan Bogdanovic all being in double-figures.

The Cavaliers continued to keep the game close, but Gobert was the best player on the floor to close the game on both sides of the floor, playing defense, and grabbing offensive rebounds.

SALT LAKE CITY – Jazz center Rudy Gobert made a series of clutch plays on both ends of the court to help Utah beat the Cleveland Cavaliers.

With 1:42 left in the fourth quarter, Gobert spun off the defense of Cavs center Jarrett Allen before driving towards the hoop. Gobert rose up towards the hoop and slammed a thunderous slam dunk down through the cylinder with his left hand.

The jam ended up being the game-winning bucket and gave the Jazz a one-point lead, 109-108.

Gobert had two blocks during the final 3:29 of the game, including a big block on a potential go-ahead layup attempt by Cleveland’s Darius Garland with 48.0 seconds left.

Rudy Gobert only finished with six points, but to say that he was impactful would be an understatement. He was without a doubt the most influential Jazz player on Sunday. Even the impressive statline of 20 rebounds and five blocks doesn’t begin to explain it. He was everywhere and was such a leader on the defensive end. There were plays where he guarded four people in one possession, sliding and recovering and calling out rotations. Unreal stuff from Gobert.

“He was dominant. I thought there was a few times he went up strong and I’d like to see him get to the line more... But he’s such a presence defensively.” — Jazz head coach Quin Snyder

The Cavs had the ball in the final possession of the game, with a chance to win it, and the Jazz had one of their best defensive efforts of the night through those final seconds. Specifically, Mike Conley’s defense on Darius Garland, was impeccable. It was a game-winning defensive showing from Conley.

Gobert finished with just six points but grabbed 20 rebounds, dished out three assists, and blocked five shots. His 20 rebounds were two less than Cleveland's starting centers Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley had combined.

"He was dominant. … He's such a presence defensively," Utah head coach Quin Snyder said of Gobert. "There were a few times where he went up strong, and I'd like to see him get to the line more. He's finishing with a lot of explosiveness right now. … He had that one finish where he dunked it over the top of somebody."

But the numbers don't even begin to do justice just how dominant and disruptive he was on defense.

His ability to defend both players in the pick-and-roll and not allow Cleveland to feast in the paint was tremendous. Gobert was then able to defend on the perimeter while still protecting the rim, including a massive block of Garland with 48 seconds left to preserve the lead.

Despite being significantly undersized as a team, the Jazz held Cleveland to 45.7% (42-for-92) shooting from the floor.

Again no one is saying Gobert sucks,I think he's easily the best defensive player in the league during the regular season these past few years.

just give Mitchell credit for once in your life and admit he's been Utah's best player in the playoffs these past two seasons :facepalm

The league set a bad precedent was set to usually just give dpoy to the big man who blocks a ton of shots. The media rarely gives it to the best defender in the NBA in terms of versatility, switch ability, guarding multiple positions, defensive iq, etc. Perimeter defenders who may not get high block totals because they defend at a high level mostly jump shots and taking guys out of rhythm is very underrated. If you’re the best wing/guard defender and you have a Dame, Steph, Harden, Booker, Durant, Kawhi, Luka, Tatum, etc. it’s a much harder task than being 7’1 getting weak side blocks rotating when 6’3 pg drives. He usually stays one foot outside the paint anyway on non threatening bigs. The moment he has to go against a small ball lineup or a big who can actually score or is versatile he gets baked.

Yep, hence why I said Gobert is the best defensive player in the REGULAR SEASON, he has been a borderline liability on defense come playoff time

He can't guard all 5 guys by himself. That has been proven

Doesn't stop you from posting game threads of your hero's team though like this one here.
