current fans? curry probably currently has the most fans then lebron. retired players have some hardcore vocal fans still but in the big picture...when the lights are brightest on the nba...the playoffs...they're irrelevant.

That list looks pretty damn solid. The only selection I would really question is Giannis. Fans don't relate to players his size the way they do to the guys who are closer to "normal" height, and he plays in a really small market to boot. Maybe 'Nique instead? Or Russ?

Jordan will always be a known entity due to incredible branding.
Kobe right now because pop culture always elevates a celebrity after they die tragically. Plus the branding.
Lebron right now because of how polarizing he is.

Yeah, but I think the MVP award and the ASG votes are more in recognition of Giannis' talent and achievements than an outpouring of love and affection. Kawhi has been an ASG starter for the last three years, and he's not getting voted in because of his magnetic personality.

Just occurred to me, what about former players who are now TV analysts? Shaq has been mentioned in this thread already, but does he get a boost from the TNT audience? And how about Chuck? He's probably better known than 95% of current active players, maybe more. And he seems to be able to say the most outrageous things on live TV but never gets into trouble.

Dr. J was my favorite player as a kid, then it became Moses Malone and still is. I started watching basketball in 1979 with the Bird/Magic NCAA game. The Doctor is currently 3rd on my list.
