View Full Version : Jordan’s tough physical era
expansionera

Had more players under 6ft and 170lbs than any other era in NBA history, including Wilt Chamberlain’s era
Muggsy Bogues, 5’3 136lbs (shortest player in NBA history)
Earl Boykins, 5’5 135lbs
Spud Webb, 5’7 133lbs (lightest player in NBA history, 1x dunk contest winner)
Greg Grant, 5’7 140lbs
Charlie Criss, 5’8 165lbs
Avery Johnson 5’10 185lbs (1x NBA Champion)
Michael Adams, 5’10 162lbs (1x All Star)
Mark Price, 5’11 160lbs (4x All NBA, 4x All Star)
https://www.charlotteobserver.com/latest-news/rh77to/picture242492671/alternates/FREE_768/4.28.95_1995+playoffs.JPG
While Adams and Price became dominant all star players most of the sub 6 footers remained role players during their careers. That having been said it’s hard to take the accolades of a man who scored 30ppg while being guarded by the likes of 5’3 Muggsy Bogues very seriously
Conversely, 5’10 Isiah Thomas was out of the league pretty much right after coming up against Lebron

If he was playing today, Jordan would have to face a defender of this caliber on an average nightly basis:

"It's hard where a guy, he's running at top speed, he can easily catch up with you," Rose said. "It's extremely hard where a 6-8 guy can easily defend you.

Avery Johnson was still in the league with James. The idea that a few guys under 6ft are able to hang in the league means the league wasn't tough or physical is stupid. The physicality of Jordan's era wasn't about the height of players it was about what th he rules allowed defenders to do to guys they were guarding. Lastly saying Muggsy Bogyes guarded MJ is a lot like saying JJ Barea defended James. Trolling like OP with no context or real knowledge of web bay you're talking about isn't going to be effective.

Multiple players under 6ft receiving a litany of all star and all NBA selections, moreso than even earlier eras with less nutrition and tech, would suggest the NBA wasn’t any more physically imposing in the 90s and “soft” players like Curry or KD could hang around with relative ease despite being slight of frame.
Lastly, physical defense =/= good defense. Giant unskilled lumbering bigs throwing out flagrants isn’t actually anymore effective in stopping stars than zone scoring, although I could see how a 5’7 player (common in Jordan’s era) might find Greg Ostertag intimidating around the rim

When people talk about th he physical defense Jordan faced do you think they are referring to Mason and Oakley on the Knicks, the Davis Brothers in Indiana, the Bad Boy Pistons or the few times per game Muggsy Bogues was forced to guard him due to defensive switching or a mismatch in transition? Are you the kind of idiot that thinks an NBA coach would defend the top scoring guard in the history of the game with someone a head shorter or are you the type of idiot that posts misleading bullshit in a failed attempt at humor?

It was Game 1 of the 1995 Playoffs, as the Charlotte Hornets were hosting the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls got the rebound of Muggsy’s missed 2-point jumper and were trying to get a transition bucket. In this sequence Muggsy took Jordan, and MJ didn’t hesitate to try to take advantage of the height mismatch.
Jordan got the ball at the three-point range and immediately started backing him down into the mid-range area. When he got in position he tried to do his patented midrange fade away, but when he turned around Muggsy cleanly swiped the ball from him and caught it getting ready to start a fast break, but he was called for illegal defense. You could easily argue it was clean, but a name as Michael Jordan got the call as most times but it didn’t take anything away from Muggsy’s great pesky defense.
So it would appear Jordan needed the help of the refs to overcome principal defender Muggsy Bogues in a playoff contest.
Also exposes how Jordan benefited from illegal defensive rules. "Uh uh, sorry, you can't hedge off your man when your 5'4" team mate is being posted up. Everyone needs to be on an island and watch this 1on1 matchup"
:lol

It was one game though dude. Head to head vs lewis and his celtics team mj averaged 36/6/6 on 54% fg. So there's your answer. If mj had to go up against that on a nightly basis he'd average 36/6/6 on 54%fg.
Great argument

Damn, only 36? Well, we've seen what a 37.1 ppg averaging Jordan was capable of doing when it comes to winning - finishing below an all-star-less team whose best player by far and leading scorer by a significant margin was rookie Chuck Person, then getting swept in the first round. If a Pippen-less MJ averaged 36 on a seasonly basis, he would have nothing but sub-.500 seasons and getting swept in the first round. If he made the playoffs at all, that is, since a 30-52 record isn't enough for a playoff spot these days.
Great argument

You posted this in the wrong thread, probably while you were trying to figure out which alt you were logged in with.
Anyway, LeBron still never lost to a team that was led by a 6'1 midget three seasons in a row. The second best player on those teams? 6'3 Joe Dumars, who was actually guarding Jordan most of the series and not just on out of context isolated photographs later used on memes.
