The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits last week tumbled to the lowest level in more than half a century, the latest sign the labor market is bouncing back from the coronavirus pandemic.

Figures released Thursday by the Labor Department show that applications for the week ended Dec. 4 dropped to 184,000 from an upwardly revised 227,000 a week earlier, easily beating the 220,000 forecast by Refinitiv analysts. It marked the lowest level for jobless claims since Sept. 6, 1969, when it was 182,000.

The jobless claims data comes on the heels of a separate Labor Department report released last week that revealed employers hired just 210,000 workers, even as the unemployment rate slid to 4.2%. Wages were up 4.8% in November from the previous year, well above where they were pre-pandemic as businesses look to onboard new workers.

I hate to burst OP's bubble again, but I don't think he understands. If millions of people lost their jobs last year due to the idiotic shutdowns, then of course unemployment numbers would be low again as people start going back to work again. The same jobs they lost in the first place.

OP's heart is in a good place, but his head is in the clouds.

I never considered Joe Biden in this but now that I think about it this recovery from the Trump shutdowns did happen on Joe's watch so maybe he should get some credit, good point AW.

$300 + their usual unemployment of $350. Thats 650 a week.

Prior to the $300, they were offering $600 per week plus the unemployment. Who the **** would work if you make $50k a year.

Not many in the food industry or low paying jobs of that nature. That was part of Trump's Cares Act. Thank God we've finally recovered from that.

Golly BigKobe you really think all of it is Trump's fault? That seems a bit brash pinning this mess on just one man like that, but in hindsight maybe you're right.

Inflation is the highest it's been in 40 years. Almost 7%

what good are all those jobs if nobody can afford a damn thing?

Median Income in 2000 - $31,331

Median Income in 2021 - $35,762

but inflation doesn't matter if the unemployment rate is low... that's what I've concluded from this thread.

We need to keep printing Trillions More, because Biden said it would cost nothing.

Read the OP. Wages are 4.8% from one year ago. That beats inflation so far. Yes inflation hit 6.8% but that's just for this month only. It will not average 6.8% for the entire year. Honestly seeing how low inflation was during covid it might average out to be not far off the norm. But who knows what the coming months will bring.

Everyone having jobs is better than no jobs either way.

The real inflation number is well above 10%, idiot. There is NOTHING that use to cost $100.00 not too long ago that costs $106.80 now. It's more around the $120.00 to $160.00 range. No one is complaining that their grocery bill is $214 instead of $200, they are complaining that it's $240 to $320 instead of $200. You wouldn't know shiit because you don't buy shiit, and you don't run a business. You definitely live with your parents still.

Welp, someone called me.

Listen, we are not yet at 20% to 60% inflation for groceries. Technically, many consider 50% inflation as hyper-inflation. We are not there. If we get there, I promise you it will be very much obvious without 'off the court' or 'Satan' or any other liberal here having to tell you. There is still time to reel it in within next few months.

The economy is open, and I don't anticipate any more shutdowns. Interest rates will be going up soon, which is how you fight inflation. You partisans will be off raging about the next thing. Probably will be raging about rising interest rates, which will bring down growth stocks that have been running amok for the past year. It's pretty predictable, and I don't even bother. Not even worth it as I have learned over last bunch of years.

Finally, you said something correct. Now the next step is to approach life like a conservative, work hard, have multiple streams of income. Then when Racist Pedophile joe biden crashes the market, you'll be in a better position to invest and change the trajectory of your life.

Everyone having jobs is better than no jobs either way.I wish you were right, but unfortunately the last 40 years or whatever lobbyists adjusted CPI calculations for our corporate overlords.

http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data/inflation-charts

The new cpi adjustment is to, well depends on who you hear it from, I'm sure bought politicians will tell you it's to "keep the sky from falling" so all good intentions. It's really there so people don't complain about lower wage adjustments. Imagine real inflation being 15% and your wage goes up 4.8%... companies don't like people knowing that.

Wait until we introduce chain-weighted cpi for our calculations. We'll be paying $6 for gas and the govt will show you stats on how median wage is outrunning inflation.
