I wondered what else they could have done to get him out, because he's basically in a state of torture. I only wish this on very bad people. The best lesson is to be prepared. Know exactly where you're going. He assumed that he reached a place called the Birth Canal, and so proceeded on, thinking that he would reach a safe place where he could turn around.

Caver Cami Pulham crawling out of the path known as the Birth Canal in Nutty Putty Cave. This was the path, John had assumed he had found.

Yeah I remember reading about this. Terrible shit.
Claustrophobia would be off the charts. Upside down, cramped in a tightly restricted space in the dark trying not to panic only to ultimately pass out and die. I can't imagine how horrible that would feel. It would probably be better to just accept that's your last day on Earth instead of panicking and driving yourself crazy.

**** caves. I can't deal with tight spaces like that and after seeing The Descent as a teen I swore them off for good.

I wonder if they could've given him meds to counteract some of the effects of being upside down. At least made him last a few days while they're figuring out a way.

Apparently he was 700 feet downward in the cave, and before he attempted the final descent everybody was bragging about who could go further in a middling corridor. Squeezing through 12 inch holes.
:biggums:
That's an ego darwin award. Sick measuring contest who could test death the most for nothing other than private bragging rights and basically no reason. Not to be racist but only rich white people looking for an adrenaline rush do shit like this. Rest of us are just trying to get by and wouldn't try this in a million years crawling into tight hell holes to flex nut.

They were Mormons who probably lived a wholesome, no swearing, no TV, or looking to get laid, etc. Living in that area, and with such a life, it's probably one of the default things to do. I'm not sure how often they did it. It sounded as though it was something that they did when they were kids and decided to do again for old times sake after getting together for Thanksgiving. But at the same time one of the articles that I read said that you have to be an experience caver in order to be able to enter.
It is a Darwin award, but I wouldn't say it's an ego driven one, since he and his brother were in the process of looking for a specific passage and not competing. (Also, that's more akin to say getting together with friends and seeing who could hit the longest three pointer. Competition.) And it's also a freak situation that resulted in him following the same types of steps that lead to everyday people mistakes. The difference being that every day mistake do not lead to torture.
For example being in that cave for the first time, thinking that the path he was taking had to be the birth canal would be like somebody driving to a new town and deduce that this turn is the correct turn. It is a Darwin Award, but something that is not getting out of human genetics anytime soon.
The other one is the sense of comfort that people get when they do things over and over. They develop a sense of security, and that's good as a whole, else society would be crippled. They've done this before and again, deduce that all the paths are safe, else WHY would people be allowed in?
To me the true fault lies on the officials who allow for people to get into that cave. It's pure stupidity. The cave was closed in 2004 because two (I think kids) got stuck in that same spot, two weeks apart, and had to be rescued. If you're going to reopen the cave at least fill that path with cement. Talk about a perfect lawsuit that never happened.
It is a Darwin award, yes and no. The reality is that people are extremely flawed in so many levels and are all walking Darwin Awards if the situation present itself.
A true true Darwin award I would say is that Monalisa and Pedro video stunt for likes.

I take it that poor dude tried ro escape some impoverished country towards a fully developed one? That white guy went into his death trap willingly because white people get some thrill out of putting their lives at risk. Just like all the white folks who have died trying to climb Mt Everest, spending thousands for defying death, it's definitely a white people thing. Us minorities who grew up in mean streets, we had our share of danger growing up (southeast side of Chicago), we try to steer clear of any situation that might endanger our lives meanwhile white folks who grew up in the suburbs go on safaris where they might get eaten by lions or willingly jump out of planes :facepalm

What's with all the racism? The vast majority of white people have never entered a cave, and the vast majority of white people actually feel the same way as you do about going inside of one. That's a very strong common ground. The claustrophobia alone would keep the majority of them away.
And that fear is a good thing. Those without that fear won the Darwin award tens of thousands of years ago, and thus you're left with that being something that the vast majority of people would not do.
--------------
On a separate note, a stronger fear would have saved that guy, preventing him from going into the landing gear. Claustrophobia would have probably prevented him from going in.

Let me rephrase what I said a bit, yes I realize that most white people avoid dangerous situations, you're right but that doesn't mean what I said was wrong...most thrill seekers who do risky shit are white, that's undeniable.

White people are not the most intelligent nor the most athletic people in the world but they are the most motivated and adventurous. Why do you think white people conquered all corners of the world and not blacks or asians. To say white people are the biggest thrill seekers and take the most risk I also admit is undeniable

I'm serious. I thought you were talking about space in relation to your anxiety and how important it is for you to have space. And I was thinking that caving could be a really good way for you to overcome those fears and finally be more like Manny98 (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?498560-Would-you-reveal-your-dark-secrets-to-the-world-for-1M&p=14463651&viewfull=1#post14463651). And have nothing holding you back. So long as you don't get stuck.
Just look at this compilation and think of how overcoming caving would give you that feeling that nothing will ever be able to hold you back (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?498582-If-you-could-eliminate-one-thing&p=14462166&viewfull=1#post14462166).

Just remember not to go into an unknown cave without a guide or map, since a rescue mission could cost you A LOT of money.

Don't tell me you're afraid of the dark too. You can just wear the helmet with the flashlight. Just do it.
I think Shigeru Miyamoto used to explore caves as a kid.

Well i guess i can if i really have the passion and confidence to explore through the nastiest holes that this world has for the people who like exploring them but in the first place, i don't. Plus what's deep inside them to find and see anyway? Going to mars or any other planet is honestly a much better thing to do even if that isn't possible and easy for ordinary human beings like us.

Despite the female being the smallest of the group, she couldn't go in because of her ass. Which didn't cross my mind because I was focused on her not being able to get in because of her breasts.
Another sport that the trans would absolutely, utterly dominate if it was this was some high school thing.
