Not better definitely. But lebron is playing in a lebron-friendly league so I won't be surprised if he put up better stats at the same age.

Yeah we'll see. When the time comes we can take that into consideration when comparing the 2. Alot can happen from now and then. Bron could go into a major shooting slump or maybe get injured.

What's the point of this? LeBron is two years younger than MJ at that age. In addition, MJ was 3 years removed from the league, coming out of retirement. Lastly, that was the height of the defensive era, where teams barely averaged 95 PPG. Compare that to now where teams average 108 PPG.

OP is also conveniently ignoring the fact that before 39 year old Jordan's serious knee injury in 2002, (his own player fell into his knee similar type of accident that AD suffered) he was averaging over 25 points a game and had better stats across-the-board. He had the Wizards in something like sixth place for the playoffs with a winning record and they were playing great at the time and had momentum. Before the injury, he was averaging something like 29 Points over his previous 10 games, and was playing incredibly well in the very game he was injured. At that point, he was a dark horse MVP favorite. But instead of taking time off, he continued to try to play on the knee and immediately started to struggle. He lasted for something like 10 or 15 more games and could barely move or function, thus leading to much lower overall seasonal stats. Probably he should have shut it down immediately after his knee was injured, - and in today's hyper- sensitivity to injury he probably would have been forced to - but that was not in his nature, and he had enough control over the organization to impose his will to keep playing, which probably only further exacerbated his injury and crippled his playing performance.

Ask sugar ray leonard how hard it is to retire and come back to the sport. You lose everything that kept you elite. It's not a few weeks or a few months "break" for your body. It was years for jordan of being out of condition. In some ways, playing consistently year in and year out keeps you in better condition. You don't fall off big as when you do when you retire.

But that doesn't explain how his team has won 55 games in the season after his first retirement.

02 MJ - 36/9/8

22 Lebron - 33/8/9

Of course, Lebron is way more efficient scoring and has better advanced stats...but I think 37 year old MJ (if he never retired) could do what Lebron is doing this year if MJ was playing right now.

Both are so clearly out of their primes though.

You're a dumbass if you think MJ didnt condition himself before his comeback. The last thing he'd want to do is look bad on the court.

Which is the better way to avoid injury / wear and tear on the body.... playing or not playing?

^^That is all very true. Jordan had to lose a lot of weight that he has gained in his retirement, he was rusty, and out of shape from the beginning of the season, and was playing his way into shape and starting to dominate. He was also recovering from the fractured ribs that Ron Artest had given him, and people also forget that after his retirement in 98 he had cut his right index finger severely on his right hand, which caused it to be permanently crooked and he admitted affected his shooting substantially.

Given how he was playing in 2002 before his injury, I think it is quite reasonable to assume that if Jordan had never retired and never suffered those injuries, he could have averaged 26 to 28 points ppg, if needed, in 2001 and 2002 on the Wizards team. It's quite clear he needed to average at least around 25 points per game them to have any chance at the playoffs, because once his play fell off dramatically after his knee injury, the Wizards tanked completely.

Personally, I think if he had not been injured, Jordan would have ended up averaging over 26 points per game for the season and would have had the Wizards in the playoffs. They were solidly in the playoffs at the time of his injury and had a good winning streak going with Jordan playing stronger and stronger. It was a very unfortunate injury in many ways, and likely robbed us of the last vestiges of Jordan's dominant play.

Wear and tear? He's not playing football here. Lol, he's not even allowed to be touched on the drive. The game is less physical now. If you are big and athletic, you can get by just fine.

Being out of shape and heavy, forcing yourself back to play at the highest level again at 39 years old, you can get yourself hurt.

James still had to run up and down the court. He's still jumping. Just being on the court there's a chance of injury.

MJ didnt comeback at age 39, he played the season before. His first 2gms back he avg. 38mins a game. Does that sound like a guy whose fat, rusty and out of shape? Playing yourself into shape and endurance would require starting slow, then gradually get more minutes. That's not what happen with MJ.

You guys make it sound as if MJ went from the couch, to signing a contract and then playing 2wks later.

Where was it said that Jordan jumped out of bed and went straight to playing in the NBA? He had a few months of training sure. But he was old when he came back and a few years removed from the game and he only got a few months to get in shape? Do that with any other profession and you still lose some edge. Staying in the game keeps you in shape and it keeps you updated as the game evolves. I'm not saying it's the best thing that MJ did. Not a fan of his return to the wizards. But bronstans saying that years off of the game even game him a boost because he was able to let his body rest is something I don't agree with either.

Staying in the game does help, but we're talking about a players 19th consecutive season here. If MJ was doing that in his 19th consecutive it would be impressive as hell, but he needed 19yrs to play 15 seasons by choice.

Yep. ... better chance of injury when you're golfing or gambling... then it is making NBA Finals runs.

Nah not when mj played baseball for 2 of those and never load managed when he did play. Also hsd to deal with more physicality. They also practiced way harder back than. Practices were tougher than games so really mj was playing well over 100 games a season.

Age is the best comparison and more times than not at the same age mj was a little better.

If MJ practiced harder than he played in games, then why run to Stern to cry about how physical the games were?

One teammate that nobody's heard of in 1997 says practices were sometimes harder than the games. Easy for him to say cause he barely saw the court.

Probably when you consider all the factors that i mentioned above. It's weird because anyone who's a baller knows games are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to miles. Your do way more in training, practices and pick up games combined and we have no idea who has more mileage when you factor in everything that's why age is a way better measure
