'86 Celtics. Probably the greatest mix of talent and chemistry the NBA had ever seen until the '17 Warriors came along. Very hard to find a weakness on this team, great offense, GOAT frontcourt, good shooting & great passing, #1 in rebounding & #1 in defense.

73 win Warriors

The best team by # of wins for a season is the 1996 Bulls. They played 100 games that year and were 87-13, (87% win percentage). Went 15-3 in the playoffs, won chip.
The 2016 Warriors were 73-9 regular season + 15-9 in the playoffs, so 88-18 (83.01% win percentage) and LOST the chip. They lost as many playoff games in 24 games as they did the 82 game regular season. By default, obviously, a team that loses in the finals could never be in the "GOAT" team list.

96 Bulls not only had the league MVP, scoring champ, easily the GOAT player by a wide margin, FMVP, but a smothering defense and arguably the top 3 rebounders (Rodman) and an all-world defender (Pippen) and several amazing role players. Now obviously Kerr was bad on defense and Rodman on offense was almost like only having 4 offensive players, but the key was everyone knew their role and did it very well.
My vote for #2 would be either the 86 Celtics or that 67 Sixers team with Wilt on it (68-13 regular season) and won the Chip.
#3 86 Celtics
#4 - 2001 Lakers.

Also fun fact:
1996 Bulls are the *only* team in the history of the NBA to win 70 or more games and the title. No other team has ever done it.
Who's 2nd place? Right, that same team the next year - 1996-1997 Bulls. 69-13 and their 5th chip.

It's 1995-96 Bulls, and it's not even close.

I remember back in 2004, NBA.com had a tournament to determine the GOAT team, they had a bunch of analysts who were former coaches and people in media all vote on matchups that was based off seeding. I don't remember the full tournament, but I think the Final 4 teams ended up being the '67 Sixers, '86 Celtics, '87 Lakers, & '96 Bulls. The '86 Celtics beat the Bulls in the semifinals and the '87 Lakers beat the Celtics in the Finals.

I wish I could find this project online, but it seems to have gotten erased by the internet.

I am going 2016 Warriors. The 1996 Bulls went to six games in the Finals vs Gary Payton-Detlef Schrempf Seattle SuperSonics. Sonics held them 4 times under 100 points too.
They didn't face a "great" team, Warriors had to go through tougher competition in 2016.

The 2016 Warriors set so many records and if the only knock against them is losing to a SUPER CHARGED LeBron James and Kyrie Irving then so be it.

The 1996 Bulls beat the Payton Sonics :lol
The 2016 Warriors beat the KD Thunder, which is a much, much better team

If the Warriors played the weak Sonics they'd have a chip too.

Records set by the 2016 Warriors:

• 24-0 start (Best start in NBA history) The previous best was 15-0 by the 1994 Rockets

• Best eFG% shooting team of all time

• More efficient than 96 Bulls, PER weighting

https://i.postimg.cc/7h23RYMb/73-beats-72-efficient.png

• Never lost two games in a row (WHAT THE FU**)

None of this means anything if you don't win when it counts. Remember the 2007 Patriots? And this isn't even the Super Bowl where a team can get lucky in one game (the Patriots probably beat the Giants in a 7-game series). The Warriors showed their true colours by choking when it counted most. Forget it.

Not winning a championship in football is significantly more forgivable than not winning one in basketball, or any other team sport. In one game anything can happen, and even if they didn't win the Super Bowl, the '07 Pats imo are easily the best NFL team of the last 20+ years. You get beat 4 times in a series, you're not in contention for greatest team ever.

The Sonics with Kemp, Detlef, Payton were very tough. Went 64-18 that year. You may not be old enough to remember watching that series as an adult. Using your logic though, the 16' Warriors LOST to a pathetic 57-25 team.

We could argue 86 Celtics and 67 Philly, but please don't include regular season hero teams.

And for the record - the Bulls only lost 1 game before the finals, and were up 3-0 on the Sonics in 96'. Sometimes you get bored, as clearly Mike needed a push. Too bad when Curry got pushed in Game 7 of 2016 he flung a pass out of bounds headed for Klay.
