View Full Version : Why does the media act like Lebron is more famous than he is?
Walk on Water
12-31-2021, 04:40 AM
I'm not saying he's not famous. But I'm just saying based on my perception, he isn't Michael Jordan. I know several of people that have never even heard of Lebron. It may sound a bit ridiculous, but some people don't follow. Everyone knows Michael Jordan. Not knowing Jordan is like not knowing Muhammad Ali or Babe Ruth. Lebron is not on that level, but the media acts like he is. He is not. And his name doesn't have the same ring to it. Why does the media need to push him still? With Jordan, his brand spoke for itself.
Some people will say that he's so famous that he has people like me dancing. No. It's because we're annoyed by the media. They are really annoying. And Lebron isn't doing anything with the Lakers this year. Then the narrative by the fan changes. They say he has nothing to prove and is scoring all these points.. So now winning isn't that important. But if he hits a game winner, you'll be all over him.

Agree.
There's many people who don't know who lebron is.
Whereas Jordan was literally the biggest person in the world, black Jesus...everyone was enamored by Mike.
I don't expect kids these days to understand...the Internet and social media has kind of ruined the whole famous thing...they literally can't comprehend how things were back then, no one has been THAT big these past couple of decades.

There's always a bigger star.... Jordan was cultural icon and huge.
But there's one MJ who trumped Jordan in overall famous. There will never ever be another michael jackson who even Jordan was a fan boy of.
But back to main topic. Lebron is famous and will grow more famous after retirement because he will travel the world.

LeBron is definitely the most well-known active player, so of course there are going to be a ton of threads about him on a basketball forum.
The media is building LeBron up because he's current. They have a vested interest in trying to build LeBron up to be a rival to Jordan. Casual fans are more likely to watch games if they think they're watching the best ever. The NBA skyrocketed in popularity while Jordan was playing, and cratered after he retired. The league and the sports media want those monster ratings and sold-out games again.

So why does Jordan sell more shoes?
Lol, what does selling more shoes has to do with being well known or not? His shoes are amazing and people love it. But 90% of people wearing it barely know who he is. Its like buying nike shoes, you don’t even know the person behind it is and you don’t care, you just buy it for the shoes.
But comparing Jordan and Lebron is so retarded in a « well known situation». You can compare Jordan with Bill Russell etc, but Lebron is on a whole other level. No one really knows who Jordan outside of the basketball world is and the people who know its bc of Space Jam or think he’s some old golfer…

Perform better on the big stage - NBA Finals. As someone who lives in Miami and had an up close seat to 2011, that stain is indelibly imprinted in my head - especially compared to the world-wide phenomena that was MJ. Hasn't been anything like that in my 44 years of watching the NBA - certainly not Lebron hopping from team to team in search of help to win.
And the sport has evolved because of Lebron? Nah, that'd be Steph.

It's an unfair comparison because basketball was a blip in the 80s relative to its standing among international sports now. Relative to the NBA, MJ was bigger. In fact MJ was so big he almost on his own took the NBA to another level(particularly the 92 Olympics). The 90s is when global marketing really took hold. Guys like MJ and Ronaldo were at the right place at the right time for a company like Nike to spread them to the World. Lebron hasn't really done more than just take the baton and keep jogging gingerly.

Within the world of hoops, James' fiercest competition comes from (surprise, surprise) Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. Coincidentally (or not), Jordan was the player of the 1990s, Bryant was arguably the player of the 2000s and James now looks to make the 2010s his own.
He's well on his way to doing just that, both on and off the court. LeBron is far and away the most followed NBA personality on Twitter, with well more than nine million people tracking his every tweet. Only Shaquille O'Neal, with a following of more than 7.4 million, can hold a candle to James in that regard.
However, when Facebook enters the fray, the competition begins to heat up. As it happens, James' flock of Facebook fans is "only" the third largest among basketball players, behind (you guessed it!) M.J.'s and Kobe's.
that's from an article in 2013. let's update it.
