This was a house that was made into a duplex to house two families. Here, there were a combined 26 people living there. The four smoke alarms weren't working properly.

Not sure how a landlord would let that many live there.

There were six working battery-operated smoke detectors installed in the building, but none were operational at the time of the blaze, firefighters said.:facepalm

this is horrible.

It's always the kids I feel sorry for cause they're supposed to rely on adults being responsible enough to ensure their safety and security.

No. The article said the kid is apparently extremely distressed over it. He admitted to it, and officials ruled out other explanations
