Players get injuries all the time and miss games and people complain about them. Imagine sitting out years :biggums:

Because it's about boredom and sense of accomplishment. He felt he was already on top of the world after a threepeat. When you are so far above your peers, it's boring after a while

Mental toughness means you have to want to go to a job you don’t need?
People are so wrapped up in sports they ignore that life is much greater than a game. Nobody needs to explain why they want to do something different for a while. He’s already been retired for more years than he played. Most of his life’s “mental toughness” won’t be able to be shown in the nba.

well the first one he was forced to. and the last one was just a regular retirement cause his time was up. at most you could give him shit for retiring in 98 cause of his finger or some coaching change/rebuild.
kobe wasn't afraid of that. even on 1 leg knowing he would fail. he still gave it a shot
lebron on the other hand. he's bailed from every rebuilding situation he's ever faced

Why was he forced to? What happened?

Phil quit to avoid a rebuild. then Jim buss picked dantoni over him when they got nash and Howard to try and run a fast break run and gun offense with old geezers.
oh yeah and before that the paul trade was vetoed so Odom went insane and got traded for nothing basically.
then nash broke down for good and Howard pussied out
then nobody wanted to sign with LA cause of kobes oldschool mentality and everyone was part of the new soft banana boat happy play time era that just wanted fun practices.
so kobe took a 10 million dollar pay cut regardless at 25 million instead of a possible 35 million and he got injured 2 more times then finally retired when he became the worst player in history. but he had a nice retirement game basically matching the best game lebron ever had

Nailed it.
I've said it on here many times, life is so much bigger than basketball and sport...not only for players, but for most of us here too.
Always hard watching your team lose a final and maybe even a deep playoff run...but life goes on.

Kobe bailed on the Nets so he could ride the bench for 2 seasons in LA.

Sports were different back then, many dominate players pursued careers in multiple sports simultaneously :lol more embarrassingly Mark Eaton, a defensive player of the year from Jordan’s era, worked part time as a mechanic at the time
While Jordan showed little mental fortitude when tasked with winning back to back titles and benefited from taking years off, many of his competitors were pulling double duty training for Olympic relays or just having a plan old regular day job
Is it any wonder the Bulls won six titles considering the extremely weak era?

Why? Because he can articulate something you don't comprehend?

Because his retirements had nothing to do with mental toughness...?
People are overanalyzing these players too much.

So in 98, when he says during his speech "mentally, I'm exhausted".... what's he referring to?

Jordan broke players. Whereas Lebron got broken by players such as Devin Booker, Dirk, Dwight Howard

You can show me when Lebron won with Shaq or with Tim Duncan a gold medal and I'll concede. I'm waiting *****.

Kobe bailed on the Nets so he could ride the bench for 2 seasons in LA.
the lakers were a rebuilding situation when kobe wanted to go there. it was inbetween magics retirement and shaqs acquisition. the lakers with just a young eddie and nick and no vlade were probably a 30 win team tops
what if orlando gave shaq what he wanted. kobe didn't know shaq at the time. he had no idea what would happen that summer. kobe wanted to be a laker and didn't exactly have a choice where to play. in fact recently its come out that he wouldn't have minded playing for the clippers but they passed on kobe cause they didn't wanna get heat for picking a highschool kid

And again, how does that have anything to do with mental toughness? He was 35 and came off a 2nd 3-Peat where he missed 0 games for that whole stretch, he had 0 left to prove as the undisputed GOAT.
