View Full Version : Kevin McHale had one of the most ridiculously oversized wingspans ever

I was watching some highlights of him and Bird and saw this play. He barely gets off the ground but because his arms are so long he's comfortably above the rim. He's definitely one of the most oversized PFs ever when it comes to standing reach and wingspan.

Not only that. He was also the most skilled post player ever in terms of variety of moves.

Why isn't McHale brought up when talking about the greatest PFs of all time?

I don't know why...maybe because he was not that athletic or a dunker. Nobody had more moves than McHale. Not even Hakeem (quicker footed). Before his 1987 injury he was the best PF in the game.

He's got to have a standing reach in the ballpark of 9-5 to 9-6. At 6 foot 10 with arms that long and shoulders that high-set. He was such a big PF that he guarded -- and scored on -- Kareem and Ralph Sampson, two guys in excess of 7 foot 2.

Probably because he played behind the shadow of Bird. But a top PF nonetheless.

He is.

I mean whenever its discussed here, it's all about Dirk, Duncan, KG, Barkley, Malone. McHale is usually an afterthought.

Webber said McHale was tough as hell to guard. He thought he could handle him but it was different being there actually playing against McHale.

Jerry West also had a huge wingspan. It's one of the best attributes for basketball athleticism.

Lots of great quotes about him out there.

"He's 6-10 but his arms are so long that he plays like he's 7-4," said Los Angeles Coach Pat Riley.

Lebron, in his prime, already had to have private lessons from Hakeem and that did very little to improve his ugly moves. Limited stiffarming is not part of McHale's repertoire. Their moves are anything but comparable.

Chris Webber?? McHale retired a year before Webber's rookie season.
