View Full Version : What does Morant need to do to win MVP?

Hes doing unimaginable stuff on the court. Like literally hes one of a kind, never before seen type of stuff. His team is third in the West with a fantastic record and he doesn't even have a proper second star.
Ja is the real MVP.

Hmm, if they get the 2nd seed then he might get it. Yeah it seems possible. He missed 13 games and Grizzlies went 11-2 in those games so that might hurt his chances a bit.

its not so much what does he need to do but rather what do others need to not do.
giannis needs an injury, jokic needs to.stick around .500, embiid needs more DNPs for rest, curry needs to.keep slumping, booker and paul need to keep canceling each other out. same with Mitchell and gobert. same with Bam and butler... and Durant already threw it away with his injury
so it's really just 2 guys standing in his way now

Those games have been widely disproved as an anomaly. Thinkingbasketball has a good analysis about it.

MVP voting fatigue should do it for both Giannis and Jokic. Ja is doing things they can't dream of AND with a weaker roster. This should be talked way more than it is atm.

Ja is definitely the MEP(Most Exciting Player) in the League but not the MVP. Memphis starting their win streak when Ja wasn't even playing. As another poster indicated statistically, he is the worse defender on his team, but this ignored because of the highlight plays.
Ja is the new Doncic, new Zion the player that the media loves to over hype until the next guy comes along.
Is he the most exciting player to watch? YES, Is he an all-star? YES, Is he really MVP level now? NO Memphis has played well when he is on or off the court which doesn't scream MVP but the media will keep pushing this narrative.

Number 1 record, Memphis was winning at a higher rate without him lol
Jokic and Embiid are clearly MORE VALUABLE to their respective teams, and better players at that. Philly is absolute shite without Embiid.

First of all, there is zero hype about Ja compared to Zion and Doncic in the past year. He isnt even mentioned in the MVP conversation and he damn well should be.
Secondly, MEP should factor in MVP massively. This is a guy that pulls off rabbits out of a hat on a daily basis, doing unseen stuff on the court AND putting in the boxscore and advanced stats AND winning WITHOUT an actual second star.
Defense doesnt matter when youre a pointguard who carries that much load on offense. His overall effect on that team is huge. His teammates are lifted by him being part of that team, not only when he plays. Don't tell me he isn't up there in the conversation.
As for the record without him, damn right its an anomaly. They played bottom teams and had absolutely bonkers shooting luck both on offense and defense (to use the words of the thinkingbasketball dude). Morant is underrated at this point if he isn't recognized as MVP caliber player.

He still missed 13 games. Whats the most games missed for a MVP in history? That's important.

Jokic, Embiid and Giannis are the clear frontrunners at this point

The Ja Morant hype started this season when Doncic had a slow start and Zion was injured. If you haven't noticed all the extra coverage he is getting over guys with similar or better numbers, you haven't been paying attention. They did the same thing with Bradley Beal last season and Tatum before that.
I've heard his name thrown out there on NBA TV and several other media outlets but like many have pointed out MEMPHIS IS GOOD WITHOUT JA. How can he be MVP when his team plays just as good without him? Memphis is WINNING, they proved they can win with or without Ja, so your point about having a 2nd star is mute. Ja is the most exciting player in the league to watch right now and that saying a lot. He has also been great this season in big games playing against other stars. With that said the MVP is premature, there are many other players that are much more critical to their team's success than Ja.
Average a triple double on a 47 win team.

Winning 10 games without Ja means shit. There are analyses that have debunked this myth. Ja's effect on the team is even more diffuse than simply being on the court, although its way bigger when he is. And the advanced metrics confirm this because hes near the top in each of them except defense. He is a leader and captain of that team. If you add the excitement factor to this, he has a very strong case. Being a slasher this good in a league of shooters is something special.

It means a lot. It means they did just fine without him unlike Philly would do with Embiid.

AD is obviously far more valuable to his team than Brony is. And you know that, so stop acting delusional.
I'll sign on to Morant for MVP. He deserves it as much as Jokic and more than Giannis or Curry.
Better than curry at that for sure. But not over the big candidates.

The main argument against him is that the Grizzlies have a 11-2 record in the 13 games he missed.
Had he played all the games, he would've been the favorite to win MVP, as he has zero voter fatigue.
PeroAntic
01-30-2022, 12:53 PM
Yeah, at this point Im resigned to the fact that Grizzlies have to be top seed for him to win it. Even though if you look deeper the story about that 11-2 is more complicated, people only remember 11-2 without Morant. shame because hes the reason to turn on the game rn.

He is the MVP. The ability to dazzle like this on a nightly basis HAS TO factor in. He has the best star support vs. standings ratio of all candidates. He is the most spectacular of all the players in the league.
Time for history to repeat itself:

I like Morant but isn't going to win the MVP. Memphis was winning without him and Embiid/Jokic/Giannis are having huge years. The only chance he has is if those 3 get hurt.
Morant's highlights are the best in the league but his actual production isn't.

For me, I would vote for Ja Morant and here's why. There's no question Embiid is having a fantastic season, but so far Philly has actually taken a step back this year while Memphis has taken a huge step forward. Unless they can catch Miami, which they might, we'll see, the fact remains Memphis has skyrocketed to 3rd in the West and atop the Southwest Division. I know he's missed some games and they played well, I just don't know if the voters will look that deep into it. My vote would be for Morant if everything holds.

Morant's highlights are the best in the league but his actual production isn't.
His highlights offset the small margin by which he lags in actual production, because he is far and away best in highlights. Aesthetics matter. Entertainment matters.
btw its normal for a pointguard to not be as statistically dominant as a big.

That has widely been debunked as unsustainable fluke. Voters should be able to know that.

Of course it isn't sustainable to maintain a 70 win pace. :oldlol:
Morant's production isn't on the same level as the top 3 in the MVP race.
I can't remember the last time a first time All-Star won MVP. Wes Unseld maybe?

Morant low key doesn’t impact the Grizz winning. He had the quietest 38 pts last night in a bad loss.

I don't think he's MVP-worthy at all but saying someone had "quiet" points is a terrible argument. It really doesn't mean anything. If not for him matching Tatum in the fourth they lose by 30.

Yeah, the little exciting guys got it hard. Remember when Rose won it people were hyping DH like crazy when his team collapsed in March and April.
