View Full Version : Pascal Siakam & Fred VanVleet Post Historic Jordan and Pippen-esque January

You've got Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird and Kevin McHale, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal, John Stockton and Karl Malone, and suddenly Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet have joined the list following one of the greatest months in NBA history.
It's strange to think of the Toronto Raptors' duo in that category and while it'll certainly take a TON more winning to actually join that list, the two Raptors just posted a January to remember. They became just the third duo in NBA history to each post 325 points and 100 assists in a single month, per Justin Kubatko. The @Raptors Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet each tallied at least 325 points and 100 assists in January.
They are the third duo since the ABA-NBA merger to do so in a calendar month:
✅ Johnson & Nixon (Dec. 1979)
✅ Jordan & Pippen (Jan. 1992)
✅ Siakam & VanVleet (Jan. 2022)

Three years ago the Raptors really had a 9 man rotation of…
Kawhi Leonard
Pascal Siakam
Kyle Lowry
Fred VanVleet
OG Anunoby
Danny Green
Norman Powell
Serge Ibaka
Marc Gasol
If this squad stayed together they would’ve been a dynasty.

And all for what? A 9th seed? Playing against rested stars vs the elite teams.
Vanvleet was a bench warmer in the 2019 playoffs. Siakam has been a career negative BPM in the playoffs every year of his career without kawhi

No because Leonard can't stay healthy. Even if he could stay healthy they were never the best team. Warriors just got hit by the worst injury explosion the finals have ever seen
these boys are just absolutely balling

He was healthy enough to score 732 points in a playoff run. I don't remember any Celtic ever doing that. Bill Russell probably barely sniffed 200 for most his rings.
Kawhi beat 2 time mvp giannis, 2 time mvp curry, superstar duo embiid and butler. Nobody ever had a harder path then that in nba history.
Also the 2019 finals warriors were the same thing as the 2016 finals warriors with draymond missing a game instead of klay missing a game and a quarter. Only draymond is way more valuable then klay as proven this season and their entire careers.

thats why kawhi is a retard. he had a ton of help and was arrogant enough to think he could redo it from scratch - the clippers really thought they were building a dynasty

Surprised no one has said anything about Gary Trent Jr. In the last 5 he's averaging 32 a game and 52% from 3 on 12 attempts.
Raptors are 4-1 with wins over Miami x2, Atlanta, and Charlotte

You wrote this dumb shit like no one remembers Curry Thompson and KD getting hurt. You post with some kind of mental illness. And who cares if he scores more than Russell? What does that have to do with this topic?

James was still playing. For Cleveland to be worse off he would have had to be hurt.

This.
Of course, Kawhi did his thing by taking tough shots and drawing attention from Lowry and Siakam. But at the end, it's a team game and everyone has their roles. Lowry and Siakam did great jobs themselves.

The Clippers should have won the title in 2020. They were the best team in the league. Them losing to the Nuggets was one of the worst choke jobs ever.
James was still playing. For Cleveland to be worse off he would have had to be hurt.
And Curry was still playing for the Warriors :confusedshrug:

"Duos" like VanFleet/Siakam or DeRozan/Lavine are defined as 2 guys that are close statistically, so Jordan/Pippen isn't a duo
It's one guy carrying another guy... . :confusedshrug:.. there's never been a bigger statistical gap between 1st and 2nd option (stats here (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?501627-AD-almost-did-this-last-night&p=14531196&viewfull=1#post14531196)) - the stats show that MJ/Pippen wasn't a duo any more than Hakeem/Horry or Dirk/Terry
but human nature's proclivity to "cumbaya" everything made them a "duo"..

Duos are required to be close statistically, like DeRozan and Lavine.. But there's never been a bigger statistical gap between 1st and 2nd option than MJ/Pippen, so it wasn't a duo - it was one guy getting carried by another guy.
Pippen had among the lowest peak capability of any 90's sidekick (22/5) and he's the only 90's sidekick that never led the team (never a 1b) - every other 90's sidekick led the team in many series, but Pippen never did.
MJ/Pippen weren't a "duo" any more than Hakeem/Horry or Dirk/Terry:

* The Bulls are the only team in history that won more than 2 Finals without a sidekick getting FMVP or 25 ppg - so Jordan won 3 times as many Finals with a low-producing sidekick as anyone else
* Only Pippen failed to reach Horry-level in the Finals over a meaningful sample size (0/6 in reaching Horry's gamescore from 95' Finals)
* People forget that Wade led Lebron in scoring for the 2011 Playoffs, while AD led Lebron in 2020 and Kyrie matched Lebron in 2016.. So everyone in history needed teammates to match or exceed their scoring for entire playoff runs, whereas Jordan averaged 10 more than Pippen in every SERIES... (edit: Jordan averaged 4 and 8 more than Pippen in 2 series, and every other series was 10 or more).. This matters because equal-scoring partners attract equal defensive attention, so everyone else had periods without facing maximum defensive attention - these periods are inflated stats compared to Jordan, who always faced max defensive attention by carrying the scoring load in every SERIES, let alone playoff run.
* Pippen was drastically outplayed by Reggie Miller against the same playoff opponent 6/6 times:
