While he is pretty much still a consensus top 10 player, prior to around 2010ish he was widely considered a Mt. Rushmore player. At one time there were many who considered him as not merely the GOAT point guard but arguably the GOAT player. I remember when that simply was not a controversial take at all. He was basically the Bill Russell of guards whereas he was viewed as the ultimate winner who contributed to winning without having to be a dominant scorer. But again, today, what is the highest you feel that he could reasonably be ranked?

Let us prepare for the following narratives. Magic is overrated because he...
Played on a loaded team
Played on a team with another GOAT candidate
Played in a weak conference that's why he went to so many Finals
Wasn’t a good defender

The 3 guys I really don't think you can rank Magic over imo are Jordan, LeBron & Kareem. I'd say the "highest" reasonable ranking you could give Magic would be 4th.

MJ, KAJ and Wilt are the immovable top 3 for me. After that anything goes. So I guess Magic peaks at #4 for me

I say 4th. BUT the impressive thing is Magic RETIRED from the league at 32 years of age. Still a top 3 player in his prime. Coming off a Finals appearance. So Magic left a lot of years on the table to fill out his resume. So for him to be #4 when his career BASICALLY ended at 32 says a lot. He put the assists record for Stock on a sliver platter! LOL And Magic would have been the first player to have 20,000 points and 10,000 dimes in a career. CP3 was the first to reach that recently. Magic would have had that way back in the mid 90's! Until Bron came down the pike, many would have Magic in their top 3 at best. But for me personally, I got Magic and Bill Russ at 4 and 5 interchangeably.

#3. 2 if you value some things over defense and a weak conference

You can put him #4 because he's the greatest PG of all-time but for me he's behind Bird and Kareem.

I would have to have him at #7. I cannot put Magic ahead of Jordan, Kareem, Wilt, Lebron, Russell or Bird.

Too many current players are ahead of him. CP3 & Curry for sure. Plenty of guys will pass him in the next few years. Giannis, Durant & Luka are possible top 10 players. I’d have trouble putting Magic in the top 10 from what I’ve seen.
