View Full Version : Why are we having a play-in tournament again?

I get it with Covid / no travel seasons or especially strike or otherwise shortened seasons.
This year the league is playing the full 82. Why is there a play-in tourney?

It makes money. I won't be liking it if the Celtics are 7th or 8th but otherwise I'm a fan of the idea.

I am a big fan of the play in tournament, there are less teams tanking early and more teams trying to make moves to be competitive. There are several teams in the East that have a legitimate chance of upsetting a higher seed. It also allows for a team with a superstar who is injured early in the season an opportunity to return and have a chance late in the season.

I think it makes for a more enjoyable season...

I'm a grumpy old man who hates it. Big gap between 7th and 10th. Makes the regular season even more meaningless.

This. At the end of the day, this tournament encourages teams like the Kings & Pelicans to make mid-season trades and not go into the tank because they have a legitimate chance of making the Playoffs.

Te Lakers - Warriors & Warriors - Grizzlies play-in games were ****ing epic, felt like a Game 7. It does suck for the teams that would have just made it as the 7-8 seed & now they have to play extra games but it's a fun watch.

So the Lakers have a shot at the playoffs. Same reason they had it last year.

In general, I'm not a fan of leagues expanding the playoffs. There should be some kind of standard for making the postseason, and I think it usually just dilutes the product. It's been an utter disaster for the NFL so far, pointless for March Madness, and would legit ruin the sport if done for college football.

I guess I'd be cool with an 8/9 game for the final spot, but idk, there's just something ridiculous to me about a team that finishes 10th in the standings still having a chance to make the playoffs, it feels completely undeserving.

Personally, I'd keep it at 16 teams, but have a clause in place that if your team finishes with a winning record, you'll have a chance to earn a playoff spot. I'd expand the playoffs with a play in game in seasons that the 9th seed (or 10th, though extremely unlikely) finishes with a winning record. Otherwise, I'd do away with it.

First round should be back to best of 5 series , but the owners want the money so the playin is an extension of that.
IMO we will see less back to back champions because the playoffs are so grueling now with every series a 7 games.

The Lakers were the 7th seed last season, shit for brains.

If anything, they had it for GSW, who were the 9th seed.

Yeah, I think it encourages middle seed teams to continue to play hard because they could slip into the playin spot but it does suck for 7 an 8 compared to the old format. It does give another perk to higher earning a higher seed.

The Nets could easily finish in the 10th spot if Durant does come back soon. Less teams are throwing in the towel by all star break and giving away assets. This has been the most competitive season in over a decade.

Wow. You might be legit retarded. When the play-in came about, it wasn't at all clear that the Lakers were going to make it to the post season. The play-in made it a lock that they would at least have a chance.

I. know. this. is. difficult. for. you. to. understand.

He's about as sharp as a bowling ball. And he's in a perennial meltdown trying to convince himself that Brony is still good.

Stephen curry's biggest kryptonite is the play-ins aka losers bracket. His team as the initial 8th seed last year were the first ones to have lost b2b games rt. Missing both klay and iggy was just too much of an obstacle to overcome for him. Luckily, he has both of them again now to carry him near top for this year so we won't see another instance of it.

The play-in tournament was announced before the start of the 2020-2021 season. Yeah the league must've been really sweating that the defending NBA champions wouldn't make it to the playoffs. Also the Warriors were the 8th seed not the 9th seed.

Let's be honest, the NBA just wants more money by any means possible. Bit them in the ass last season tho cause the warriors got knocked out in the play-ins

One of two possibilities:

1. More games in more markets = more money

2. Because f#@k you, that’s why.

Gotta love how LeBron haters were supporting the play-in format last season because they were so sure that they would lose to the Warriors. Then this happened:

Good god, you mouth breathing autistic basement dweller. Are you ever right about a SINGLE thing?

Are you under the impression that they instituted the play-in after the Lakers started losing a bunch of games? The play-in was announced BEFORE the season started.

You think the league was worried about the defending champs not making the PO's? ****ing shit head.

There's a reason why you 1-9 turds are considered to be clinically retarded and this post of yours proves it.

what are you talking about... The 7 and 8 seeds have to be part of the play-in tournament to and they earned those seeds. Also you may not like it but there's nothing "disgusting" about adding a few more playoff teams.

Just make the playoffs a best of 3
So every game would matter more and a greater chance for upsets.

NBA won't do it for financial reasons tho.
