There was a very real chance the Lakers were going to end up 9th seed, thus not making the playoffs without a play-in. As it turned out, AD came back from injuries and the Lakers ended up 7th seed. So they would have made the playoffs whether there was a play-in or not.

They were also the favorites to lead the west conference in wins and were seen as championship favorites to repeat. Nobody knew that Schroeder and Harrell would not fit or that things would fall apart due to significant injuries to the roster. That all happened long after the play-in was already integrated into the league.

Now of course, the play-in wasn't started to benefit the Lakers. But the funny thing about it is that when it was first announced it looked like the Lakers would easily cruise to a playoff seed, and Lebron came out and said that whoever came up with the idea should be fired. Later on, when it looked like they might need the play-in just to get in the playoffs, it was all crickets from Brony. :lol
