I know I was a kid back then but that always feels like a special time for NBA basketball to me. It's difficult to put into words what made it so special but those were sacred times.

Yeah. Sadly they've somehow manged to turn what used to be must-watch TV for NBA fans into a totally skippable, Pro Bowl-competition level spectacle.

I get the safety concern angle some might reference, but you know something ain't right when the pregame Draft is actually more entertaining than the game itself.

$!$# it. I say do away with the new format. Make the donations 60/40 or som'n and just let them play and hope the culture improves over time as the current generation of stars call it quits.

It didn't start with that. However that definitely added a LOT of fuel to the fire. LeBron's been one of the worst things to ever happen to the game. I'll be very happy once this cancer is gone.

As the contracts became more and more valuable and players realized more and more that franchises didn't care about them, injury concerns became more and more prevalent... hence people taking it easy until the 4th and then even still.

The immense amount of shit talking towards players by the media and general public for not winning rings is also a contributing factor.

They really need to go back to east vs. west for the all star game.

Who cares. The amount of $h!t talking from the bosses and colleagues of normal people and pressure to perform doesn't even compare to NBA players who are asked to play a child's game for a living and are paid handsomely for it.

Yep....this coward turned the league into a b1tchfest.

Once he retires, Traes, Lukas, Tatums, etc...are gonna bring the real competition back...which - you know - is what sport is all about...

Anyone who stans bron is a little b1tch

Was that the all-star weekend where a simple between the legs dunk won the contest with the crowd going insane like they saw some alien technology?

It was the transformation from competition first to entertainment first. The All-Star game used to be the place where the best of the best proved they were the best. Now it's a glorified Harlem Globetrotters event with athlete with guaranteed contracts thinking they are too valuable to compete. Which is better is subjective, but the league is continuing to grow and that's all they care about.

Just out of curiosity, how many players actually got seriously injured playing an ASG?

Think it's a microcosm of the sociocultural changes we've been expeirencing lately. Self-preservation. Entitlement. Bottomline-driven.

Soul. Competitiveness. Overcoming adversity. Become less relevant attributes as a result.

The 80's Lakers led the league in assists every year, while the Celtics had the best halfcourt passing.. Then the Pistons overcame both by developing a physical brand of ball that bent the rules.. The Bulls then overcame this brand with a small-ball, finesse approach that didn't use a big man post scorer and had equal-opportunity.. The Spurs and Warriors have taken the ball movement to new heights, while the 04' Pistons and 11' Mavs won via the best chemistry, not talent.

So previous eras had a wonderful evolution of increasingly superior brands of ball - that's how every organic winner won - by developing the best brand of ball in the league.. Unfortunately, Lebron became the first guy that never learned the best brand, so he couldn't win organically and had to team-hop (talent-based winning) - he never learned to win (brand of ball.. organic) and only learned to team-hop (talent-based winning.. all-star team strategy)..

Lebron's talent-based approach has forced everyone else to join the colluding strategy, similar to baseball players having to juice to keep up.. So now we have a league of talent-based winners instead of great brands of ball and team identities battling for superiority.. Previous eras were better at basketball (brand of ball) - Lebron has a lottery record against organic juggernauts like the Mavs, Spurs and Warriors, yet that's all previous eras had - every team was a long-standing, organic team.
