View Full Version : I was listening to Dirk promote his new book and he got drawn into an 06 finals talk.

Obviously it still haunts him. His explanation about what went wrong and things that factored in was interesting to me….
He did acknowledge that Wade destroyed them(and largely dismissed the ref thing) when asked if the team forgave Avery for doubling Shaq when he was obviously just being a decoy. But his next two issues seemed to be….Haslem being a ridiculous defender and taking away looks in the screen game with his quickness while still being really physical…and their hotel.
Apparently Avery thought there were too many distractions staying in Miami so on a whim he decided they had to move all the way up to Fort Lauderdale. They get there and dirk sees it’s a room with two beds so he throws his luggage in the second bed and goes to relax and then Darrell Armstrong walks in with his bags. They moved them to a hotel that did not have a room for everybody so the players had to double up at random and apparently Darrell is crazy and it sounds like he kept him up and they had a lot of fun.
He didn’t specifically blame it for losing of course but he talked about it quite a bit as far as how it was weird to suddenly have roommates in the finals and have your routine thrown off. How it was just a weird time with non basketball stuff throwing them off.
It was just interesting to me and as part of an overall trend when you hear players talk and they seem to put no thought into the common discussed narratives about things like that.
Haslem is a gremlin and Darrell Armstrong threw off Dirks routines. What fans/the media get out of it is 15 years of counting free throws.
I just enjoy things like that.

Kblaze if you like interesting reads about non-basketball things as well, and I know you do, then you might want to check out Patreon.com/tofp.
There's a lot of really interesting thoughts about history, economics, psychology, philosophy, physics, and how the confluence of current trends in these areas are going to shape the future in radical ways.

Anything interesting brought up about the following seasons disaster, 2011, losing Nash?

They did lose all 3 road games which was a killer but two of them were by a combined 3 points.
But I think that was a bad decision by avery. Thats something you do as a college or high school coach. Grown men should be able to handle Miami for a few days. Avery was more suited to be a college coach with his style and stuff like this. Also double teaming shaq way too much. At the end of the day it wasn't avery's fault dirk missed clutch freethrows in game 3 or 5 whichever it was.
2007 they probably would of beat spurs or gave them a run for their money but drew the worst matchup ever instead. The dirk josh Howard terry big 3 just wasn't mean to be I guess but it felt like they were the best team in 06 playoffs and 07 reg season.

Only 2011. They prodded him to say he laughed when Lebron wouldn’t post up JJ(when he fact he did and it was a charge in the famous photo). He just talked about all their vets knowing how to play, them getting lucky they caught them before Wade and Lebron knew how to trade who would take over back and forth and how they would have been killed in 12 or 13, and that them doing the cough thing was overblown by the media and he didn’t think on it much.
He was mad about Dallas printing parade routes in 2006 letting Riley get a hold of it and hand them out to the team. And I can’t blame him. Teams have to know better.

I’ve seen you post it but have avoided clicking it for any number of reasons. Right now because I’m walking through Publix. I will read it later though as it fits into my usual goal of trying to actually see the humanity in some of you people so I don’t automatically hate you for your sports takes. I will get back to you on it.

Reminds me of De Niro’s character in Casio. How he became the best sports gambler was knowing all the “other” info. If the QB’s girlfriend is pregnant, the kind of wood the court was made of, WHAT HOTEL THE TEAMS ARE STAYING AT. Lol.
This also kinda proves its way more than just pure basketball ability and talent that decides these things but those who can still perform after jumping all the hurdles.

Funny, cuz posters on here swear up and down that Shaq wasn't the focal point of the Dallas defense.

I been tellin peeps on here for years theyre not giving Shaq enough credit for that Miami chip.
Obviously Wade was huge, but Shaq was hardly some distant second. In terms of importance I think they were more or less equal.

It was all roses for Johnson at first. Nicknamed "Lil General" for his fiery temper, Johnson pushed Dirk Nowitzki to develop his low-post game and led the Mavericks to a 60-22 record in the 2005-06 season. Not only did Johnson win Coach of the Year, but the Mavericks pushed through the first three rounds of the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
Everyone knows how the 2006 NBA Finals ended. Of the hundreds of decisions you can second-guess from that playoff series-like Johnson's decision to double team Shaquille O'Neal instead of Dwyane Wade-one stands out above the rest. After a heartbreaking Game 3 loss, where the Mavericks blew a 13-point lead in the game's final six minutes, Johnson quickly pulled the Mavericks away from their downtown Miami hotel to Fort Lauderdale, nearly an hour away from the arena. "And that's when Avery kind of lost it after the game on the bus," Dirk Nowitzki recalled in an ESPN interview. "He announced on the bus that we're moving tomorrow. And then the next day after practice is when we moved to Fort Lauderdale or wherever it was, that Marriott...He completely lost it, yelling and screaming, 'There's too much family here, too many distractions.""
The hastily thrown together plans meant the Mavericks had to share rooms. Dirk Nowitzki roomed with Darrell Armstrong, while Jason Terry was bunking with Erick Dampier. It wasn't an ideal scenario, but even after the fact, the players don't blame the loss on it. "People will say what they will about Avery, but I thought it was the right strategy," Terry said in the same ESPN article. "I may have sent the family members to that hotel and not us, but that's just me. But I think he was doing the right thing just trying to get refocused and realize the opportunity ahead of us."
Still, the Mavericks blew that two-game lead, and blame for that fell on Johnson. After the Mavericks bounced back with a 67-win season, Dallas ran into the one team they couldn't beat, the Golden State Warriors. Johnson chose to adjust his starting lineup to the Warriors' small-ball lineup despite being the top seed. It clearly should have been the other way around.
