View Full Version : 3ball, if Luka wins a ring with Dorian Finney-Smith as his Pippen, how do you rank?

Luka recently said he wants to play with Finney-Smith for the rest of his career.
Finney-Smith is mostly a defensive, glue guy on Mavs, but now shoots well from 3 and has begun dunking the ball couple of times a game.
We know that Lebron needed multiple all stars as his Pippens to win a ring. Kobe needed one of the best euros ever. Magic needed Kareem, Bird had McHale.
Where does a ring with Finney-Smith rank?

Let’s see him get out of the first round before discussing where he ranks all time.

Even if he never wins another game, he will still be considered one of the GOATs, but only in a "what if" kind of way.

It would rank at the top
Very few guys in 3-pointer history (since 1980) won chips without elite scorers at sidekick, or without sidekicks that have won FMVP - the only guys that won without this kind of top-producing sidekick are 94' Hakeem, 11' Dirk, 04' Chauncey, 09/10 Kobe, 19' Kawhi and Jordan's 6 rings..
Everyone else had an elite scorer at sidekick like Wade or Kyrie, or they had a sidekick that had won FMVP like Dumars or Iggy.
Unfortunately, it's going to be hard for any player with super-high hold-time to win without significant help.. All the guys that won without premium producers at sidekick (listed earlier) had lower hold-times.
Btw, I was going to make a thread with the title "Only MJ won multiple chips without a go-to player at sidekick", but I'll just mention it here and make that thread another time.. (fyi - hakeem had drexler in 95', so he only won 1 without a go-to player at sidekick.. Btw, Kobe could be argued to have won multiple in 09/10 without a go-to player, but I think Pau was doubled a lot and was a go-to player, not just a flow scorer that commands no attention)

I think we can both agree that 1 ring with the current Mavs squad would put Luka above any of Lebron's rings, right?
We wouldn't need anymore proof, that would be it.
Would it rank above Duncan's 2003 ring though?

91-93 Pippen produced more than most sidekicks ever including 13 Wade, 11 Jason Terry, Gasol, and many others

Oh shit I forgot about 03' Duncan
And hell yeah - if Luka wins organically this year, that makes him better than Lebron because it's a much weaker cast than Lebron ever won with and Luka will have learned how to WIN (organic)...
The 04' Pistons and 11' Mavs won by superior chemistry, not talent.. Similarly, the Spurs, Warriors and 90's Bulls developed the best brand of ball in the league.. Indeed, learning the best brand and chemistry in the league is required of all organic winners, so Lebron never learned superior brand (how to win) and only learned talent-based winning (team-hopping.. all-star team strategy).

That's great news because DFS has become one of my favorite players on the team. His 3 ball shooting went up a level recently too, hopefully he can maintain.
