View Full Version : Giannis is a combination of Shaq and Wilt

Giannis has the body and athleticism similar to Wilt, he just completely outclasses everyone he goes against and he's the most physically dominant player in the NBA. He also plays with the aggression and power of Shaquille O'neal, in terms of play style Giannis has probably come closest to duplicating Shaq's unstoppable paint presence of the early 00's. There's never been any player like the Greek Freak, he came into the NBA as a frail swing-man and now he's the most imposing player in basketball and the greatest player in the world. It feels like last year was the start of a complete league take over by Giannis and he could reel off several titles in a row.

I don't think he was the power of both Wilt and Shaq.

This is the type of power Shaq had in his prime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eri9mW56R6k

And that was against a player around 280-290 lbs

If he can reel off several titles in a row, he'll be one of the all time greats. Honestly, I'm skeptical that he'll even be able to repeat this year. I predict they don't get by the Heat in the playoffs.

Huge Giannis fan but Shaq and Wilt were stronger more athletic and more imposing force at their peaks.

Giannis definitely doesn't have the raw explosiveness of Wilt or Shaq athletes like them at their size and weight with freakish athletic ability in all areas come around every 50-100 years it's very rare.

For me, Giannis is the CLOSEST to a mix of KG and Bron in a sense. KG was the BLUEPRINT for a positionless two way type of 7 footer. KG LEGIT defended big swingmen all the way to center. And he wasn't OUTTA PLACE having to defend a PG on switch. FROM THERE, he was a top shelf athlete getting 22-24 PPG, 13-14 RPG, and 5-6 dimes a night during his prime. And on offense LEGIT played as a SF, PF, C, and point forward. This type of 7 footer was NEVER seen before in the NBA. So Giannis comes from the KG tree in this sense. He's NOT AS SKILLED scoring wise as KG. BUT he's a BETTER scorer than KG. And while KG was a freak athlete in his own right, Giannis is even MORE ATHLETIC.

And Giannis' BRAND of athletic ability is the CLOSEST we've seen to a 7 foot version of Bron. And like peak Bron, he's FLAT OUT a freak athlete, great scorer, defender, passer, and rebounder in one package. Among forwards, they combined these facets BETTER than everybody else. What Bron did for the SF spot, Giannis is doing that for the PF spot. In terms of combining all those facets into one.

Wilt and Shaq WEREN'T positionless types of players. They were centers FLAT OUT! FOR SURE Goliaths and freaks of nature athletically. But those two are pretty much in their own class. If ANYTHING, Embid is like a mix of those two and Hakeem in a sense. It's BASICALLY as if Embid SKILLWISE is the evolution to The Dream in a lot of ways. Because he is the size of Wilt doing it. And Embid IS KNOWN to bring it up the court at times like young Shaq. So for me, Embid is like a blend of Hakeem, Wilt, and Shaq! And to be frank, even a bit of Sabonis due to how he can it the three for a player at that size. When you are a player at Embid's size, guys like Shaq, Wilt, and even Sabonis are gonna be comps due to their size. Giannis is more of a positionless phenom like a KG and Bron.

We had a lot of talk lately here on how KG is basically an uber sidekick.

Unfit to be first option on a title team, lacks the scoring dominance.

This kind of upping KG talk is frowned upon on ISH right now.

Do better.

Shaq and Wilt were unquestionably the strongest players in the league at the time they were dominating - and probably ever. Giannis is still behind several current players in terms of raw strength (Steven Adams, Cousins, D Howard, Deandre Jordan, Embiid and Drummund off the top of my head). Both Shaq and Wilt were really fast and were uber athletic like Giannis like you said. Wilt like Giannis had freakish giant steps that created a whole new dimension to their game. Unlike Shaq and Wilt, Giannis could contort, twist and bend into different shapes to evade defenders. Giannis is also freakishly gifted with coordination with only Durant in the same tier as him in terms of handles for 7 footers. This allows Giannis to start farther from the basket and to use his combinationation of quickness, speed, coordination, length, strength, balance, super athleticism, diversified attack, determination and grit to dominate those qualities were not present when he first came into the league (Shaq and Wilt had their advantages highly developed coming into the league).

While I did say Giannis was going to be the top foreign born player ever in his first NBA year, I never seen the POWER game being like this at all.

Good Post!

Loved the break down of how they evolved, their diversity, and the branch of skill they brought to the game.

Giannis is a combination of Rudy Gobert and Ja Morant. Think about it.

More like David Robinson I always thought. With a little bit of KG, but not the shooting component.

I don't agree that any of those guys are stronger than Giannis currently, especially Jordan and Howard. Giannis bullies practically every player he goes up against now, I don't think there is a player with greater athletic prowess in the league at the moment.

A smaller guy can bully a stronger guy - that's moreso a mindset. I said raw strength. Giannis plays with more determination, better/quick foot movement and more foot skill than those guys so his banging is more effective. Simply watch any of the combat sports if you aren't getting what I'm saying. Rodman could uproot Shaq because of technique and determination, it had nothing to do with raw strength despite it looking like he outmuscled Shaq sometimes. Dwight Howard was an all time great rebounder/defender when he wanted to rebound and defend plus he was strong. Drummund is a strong guy and that's why he's always a top rebounding guy. Other players talk of Adams strength all the time - if he had better foot skill he would be more dominant. Kevin Garnett and Ben Wallace weren't raw strength guys but they were the bully of the boards for like 7 years.

Giannis plays with more gusto than other players so he's going to get more out of physical exchanges than even stronger players.

Came across this video. The fastbreak plays at 0:23 and 0:31 reminded me of Giannis.

David Robertson would be the perfect center for todays NBA.
