There's a legend - don't know if it's actually true or not - that he used to drive his car while dribbling a basketball with his arm out the window.

did not hear that - but it is possible.
When he was a kid he would practice dribbling for 4 hours.
I can't even imagine that much.
You are right his skill of dribbling got him to an All-American , besides his scoring wizardry.

He was mostly famous for his creative play style, he was like Jason Williams on steroids. but back then he was often criticized for his atrocious defense and poor shot selection.
This is what Pat Riley said about him...
'Maravich is the most overrated superstar whoever came down the pike. Every guard in the league wants to send a limo to pick up Pete at the airport and play aginst his soft defense. I not only think Pete could play any other way; I don't think he wants to.'”

He had a an overbearing father who would force him to practice basketball all the time, which led to his alcoholism as he got older.
His story reminds me of QB Todd Marinovich, from the NFL. His dad used similar tactics, would make him throw the ball all the time, run 5 miles every day etc. Very overbearing. He became a drug addict as an adult, ESPN did a very good documentary about him years ago.

I genuinely don’t remember why but I put this together for some reason in January and never got around to whatever topic they were gonna go in….and I can’t stand a wasted gif….

I know it’s all from his 68 point game but no idea what I planned to do with it. But that’s my contribution.

Maravich would be a great player in the league right now.
for sure.
Out of the 7 LSU players that went to the NBA he was the only 3x All-American ... one year he had over 450 free throws 69/70 season.
defensive rebounder was not Shaq but Simmons.
That threw me ... but Simmons was a SF /pF and he camped out by the basket.
Shaq was very raw in LSU ... I knew he was most definitely a pro prospect , my own thought at the time was if Shaq could tolerate running up and down the court for at least 36 minutes.
I am trying to find how far LSU w/Pete went to a national championship or not ..

Pete never made it out of the first round in his prime. Just a little tidbit. Guys like Grant Hill and McGrady get tons of flack for that.

The guards in the 70's like Pete, Tiny, Monroe, Gervin, and Thompson FOR SURE were a look to the future in terms of their flash. Or athletic ability in some cases. But on a peak-prime level and of course GOAT level, NONE OF THEM were better than West or Big O. The main reason is they weren't AS COMPLETE as players. Not a knock because West and Oscar back in the day were the top guards EVER peak-prime and GOAT wise. It took MJ and Magic to FINALLY pass those two by.
Pete NO DOUBT skill wise brought shit to the table WAY AHEAD of his time. The stuff he did still stands up today. But the thing is CASUAL FANS or fans TOO CAUGHT up into flash just ASSUME Pete was better than West or Oscar. That's just not true at all. Pete would be a superstar in any era though. And was the FIRST GUARD with the blend of sick handles, flashy passing ability, and tremendous range on his shot. FOR SURE 3 ball range in his game back then. Always thought Pete in the ABA would have been a PERFECT MATCH!

For whatever reason, McGrady legitimately gets 100x the criticism for that than Hill does. McGrady is honestly most remembered for not winning a playoff series, you never even hear that point brought up about Hill.

There was a time when pure basketball ability was admired on its own merit. But by the late 70's it became clear that glory hunting and overly selfish play had crept into the leagues. The product of the NBA and ABA had become more about flash and entertainment and less about winning. I guess with the arrival of Bird and Magic on popular teams, NBA marketing changed gears and began focusing on champions and rivalries and this grew basketball to a new level of popularity. I guess by the 90s it had swung too hard the other way to where we only cared about who won and were no longer interested in ability.

I knew someone who was Rick Barry's nephew, and he occasionally went with Rick to games when he was little. Rick used to talk highly of Pistol Pete. Pete had to be defended from near halfcourt because he was unpredictable - he had crazy range and crazy vision/passing skills.
If Trae Young fits today's NBA, so would Pete. And I'm sure Pete would work a lot more on his shot. Pete had better court vision, basketball IQ, and passing skills than Trae so he would probably be a better version of Trae in modern NBA.

he was a pure shooting guard, which the league did away with when the All Star Game format changed to front court back court.
if you wanted him to run point, you'll probably need a PF with range. in fact, he's probably Ginobili on steroids
