View Full Version : “Kareem has been the leading scorer all this time and he’s not the GOAT”
So why would LeBron surpassing Kareem be any different? 36k points, 10k rebounds, 10k assists + 4 Finals MVPs. That’s why people will begin to view him as the GOAT. It’s not rocket science.

Correct.
The longevity stat doesn't undo all LeBarrys shortfalls.
This doesn't even move the needle tbh

Wrong.
Many old timers consider Kareem the GOAT.
When Bron gets 40k points those old timers will switch over plus even more global fans.

I mean, Kareem is the GOAT to some old timers so you can't really say that lol.
But that isn't because of the all time scoring record.
That's because he has 6 titles and 6 MVPs.
The scoring record just adds to his resume.
Lebron getting the all time scoring record while having 4 titles and 4 MVP's is not the tipping point that will make him the GOAT. He needs more titles for more people to be convinced he's better than Jordan and I just don't see that happening in the next 2-3 years he has left playing.

A tremendous number of people have always had Kareem as the best ever and the scoring record was always mentioned. I think my first topic here was on Wilt in the 01/02 season. Some long ass thing no doubt….and I distinctly remember a reply about Kareem beating him in the only thing he cared about(scoring) and being the best. Obviously a wrong comment in any number of ways I’m just saying…Kareem has been a GOAT pick that wouldn’t get you laughed at for at least 50 years. People had him as the goat in the 70s. An awful lot in the 80s. Like everyone it gets diluted as more names are thrown in but he’s been in the conversation and a reasonable answer for all of our lives and being the all time scorer has always been been mentioned.
I always tend to favor how dominant he was individually in his day but the normal argument? It’s always included in there.
Some people value it quite a bit. Shaq being one of them. I feel like if he’s asked about it after Lebron actually breaks it he might change his mind though.
To me it means little more than Malone being number 2 means in a goat PF discussion. A relevant number. Not just idiotic to bring up…but not deciding anything.
Off the top of my head….I’m not sure I’d take the leading scorer in any positions history as that positions best player* so it certainly doesn’t decide anything overall.
*Kareem being the best argument since I think Kobe passed Jordan and neither Magic or Duncan are the top scoring 1 or 4. Leaves only the 3 to argue about and I have no interest in fighting people who never saw Bird play about how good he was.

Only very ignorant Jordandrones think Kareem is not in the GOAT conversation, too much media narrative not enough hoop knowledge
