View Full Version : Do you ever think it's crazy how work can be our whole lives?

For many people, work and money dominate our lives to the point where we aren't even just working to live, but it's come to the point where we're living to work.
Let's say you have a 9-5 job, Monday through Friday. Heck some people work much more than that. If you work 8 hours and sleep 8 hours, that only gives you another 8 hours. However, much of that time is spent getting ready for work, commuting, and getting ready for sleep, for the next day.
It's funny how when you watch movies, especially chick flicks, they make it seem like jobs are just something people do for fun once in a while, but then somehow in the film, they have all this other time to date and party. Even doctors in shows somehow have all this free time around their schedule.
You know the saying. Work for 40 hours a week, for 40 years and retire with a 40 dollar watch and sit home in your yard cuz you can't afford to go anywhere. Isn't that depressing? Even if you have a high paying job, what is your life? Buy a house, get married if your'e lucky and have kids. You just work and work until you die.
You ever ask yourself what's the point? It's similar to being a slave. You're a servant for a corporation. Even if you have hobbies and friends.. how will you have time to ever enjoy any hobbies especially if you have a partner,
kids, pets, a house to take care of, etc..
If you really think about it, it's kind of depressing. And pathetic and lame. It's funny how they say technoloogy makes things easier. If you're still working 40-70 hours per week, I don't think that's easier. At least in the caveman days when people hunted, they got their exercise. Too much modern work these days is a big contributor to obesity.
Watch the movie Office Space. It's a good depiction on modern day society. It's like people just work because they have to, but nobody really has a purpose. It's not getting them anywhere.
What are things we can do to look at this from a more positive perspective?

Well our cavemen ancestors would say what we do is not really work. We don't even risk our lives. And we can eat all these wonderful food all the time.
It's a matter of perspective.

The great thing about America, and the Republican vision, is that anyone can immigrate to this country with $0.00 in their pocket, while barely being able to speak English, and achieve the American Dream. These days, it's a lot easier to achieve F.I.R.E. with the right mindset. There's literally no excuse to not be able to retire 10-20 years after starting a full-time job. So if you started working in your 30's, you should be able to retire before turning 51. If you started working when you're 20, you should be able to retire by the time you turn 40. A lot of people can actually achieve F.I.R.E. in less than 10 years. Here's a good book that will get anyone on track to the right mindset:

Who you associate with IRL is also a huge influence - just don't associate yourself with the AlwaysWrongBladefd's, ObeseAxe's, CommunistRRR3's, RacistLegend32's, LowIQoffthecourt's. There's a reason why they are all financially poor. Mindset is everything.

I'm glad to see that Walk on Water is back. Highwhey is back too. Which is an interesting coincidence.
Just do like RRR3 and get yourself a job at a college book store. There you will get to interact with a lot of girls in their physical prime that you can try out and develop your game on. This way you will be looking forward to going to work.

if you take away the abusive parents in people lives, you can boil it down to focus. and the balance between focus and satisfaction. and if we want to further define what focus is, you can narrow it down to an energy source that parallels that of the big bang and the perpetual satisfaction that enables us to optimize the world in which we live in.
some might call that last part of that paragraph the definition of evolution

Granted Fridays tend to be slow, but today, for example, during my 8 hour shift (which is just about to wrap) I would estimate I did 3 hours of actual work. The other 5 hours could have been spent reading, learning a skill, pursuing a hobby or working out. Because of the nature of my work I do not have the option of working from home, but even if I did I would still have to be available for my employer rather than myself. I think we waste a lot of hours which eventually add up to years of your life. It's an injustice.

it's an injustice as much as you hate/gonna hate about being a dad. then imagine thinking having siblings for them is going to solve your problems only with it blowing up in your face as they end up having different interests and requiring you to drive them everywhere.
truth is, the idea of having to be available to your employer is wrong. you have to be available to your client, which means you should be able to set your respond time. the idea regarding the employer-employee relationship may stem from people willing to spend extra for time sensitive emergencies instead of premium services, but just how exactly do emergencies exist when erectile dysfunction also exist.

I wish I read it when it came out, when I was much younger. It's a life changer, and many people who are successful and out of the rat race would agree. Only suckers and losers like ObeseAxe and SATAN would laugh at that book without even reading it.

For many people, work and money dominate our lives to the point where we aren't even just working to live, but it's come to the point where we're living to work.
And for many other people, work doesn't dominate their lives and they can still make enough to pay all their bills.
Let's say you have a 9-5 job, Monday through Friday. Heck some people work much more than that.
There's nothing wrong with working more than 40 hours a week, as long as it's temporary. Elon Musk works 80 to 100 hours every week.
It's funny how when you watch movies, especially chick flicks, they make it seem like jobs are just something people do for fun once in a while, but then somehow in the film, they have all this other time to date and party. Even doctors in shows somehow have all this free time around their schedule.
No one is forcing anybody to work jobs they don't like for the rest of their lives. You can quit, or better yet, become an entrepreneur and bet on yourself. Why do you always need someone to pay you $x for y hours worked?
You know the saying. Work for 40 hours a week, for 40 years and retire with a 40 dollar watch and sit home in your yard cuz you can't afford to go anywhere.
Don't know that saying, probably the saying ObeseAxe, LowIQoffthecourt, and AlwaysWrongBladefd lives by. If you work 40 hours a week for 40 years just to be poor, then you're an idiot and total deserving of a way below average lifestyle.
Isn't that depressing? Even if you have a high paying job, what is your life? Buy a house, get married if your'e lucky and have kids. You just work and work until you die.
It's depressing, if you always think like an employee. And hardly anyone with high paying jobs work the rest of their lives these days...they eventually branch out and become their own boss.
You ever ask yourself what's the point? It's similar to being a slave. You're a servant for a corporation. Even if you have hobbies and friends.. how will you have time to ever enjoy any hobbies especially if you have a partner, kids, pets, a house to take care of, etc..
Yeah, what's the point of thinking like CommunistRRR3 and AlwaysWrongBladefd? Luckily, it's easy to think beyond their level and realize that you don't have to be a slave to a job your entire life. That's what is so great about America.
No one is forcing anyone to work 70 hours a week for the rest of their lives. Although I think that if you're in need of money, working 80+ hours a week, TEMPORARILY, say 2 or 3 years, is actually a good thing. Anyone can choose to move on from step 1. And you do realize there's 168 hours in a week? Let's say you work 70, there's still 98 more hours left in that week. No one needs to sleep one third of their lives away every single day by the way. But let's say you sleep 8 hours a day, and work 70 hours that week, there's still almost 50 hours of time for that week!
What are things we can do to look at this from a more positive perspective?
Avoid all real life contact with the CommunistRRR3's, AlwaysWrongBladefd's, ObeseAxe's, LowIQoffthecourt's, RacistLegend32's, and surround yourself with people who made it out of the rat race. Change your circle of friends. And read financial education books, Rich Dad Poor Dad is a great start.

I spent nearly a decade in Government followed by the same amount of time in the private sector. Right now I'm sitting on a mortgage free 2 unit house that's rented out, 6 figures in the bank, no kids( just a stepson and he's 23 and working) and I now do interior car detailing for shits and giggles with another guy. Later on this year I'm going to branch off and run my own little operation. Right now I'm on the clock for like 25-30 hours a week and once I do my own thing and cut out the middle man, I'll probably be working less than 20 and making more. Adopt a FIRE and minimalist mindset and you'll realize you were brainwashed from birth to be a drone.
I'm pretty much out of the corporate rat race. No dealing with catty female bosses, no water cooler gossiping, no asking for a weeks vacation to be denied. Today one of my appointments cancelled, I was finished for the day by noon and played Overcooked on my PC all afternoon while sipping some Bumbuu rum on the rocks. The only reason I'm working right now is for health insurance and I'm planning on moving somewhere that has a universal system in place. My wife is Portuguese and I've been eyeing up real estate there for the last year.

Do you also get a government pension when you retire? I'm not sure how that works, as in how many years you have to work a governmental job in order to qualify. And did you use to live in one of the units of that 2 unit house for the tax benefits?
The hardest part for me out of all this is the minimalist mindset, I rarely splurge. But I love going to nice restaurants every other night (90% on a date, and 10% by myself), and this adds up to a few thousand dollars every month on my business credit card. :facepalm

You do get Government pension but if you leave before 8 years, you can take the lump sum which I ended up doing and put onto my mortgage principle. If the interest rate wasn't so high I would have invested it, but it just made sense to take some years off the mortgage. Once that 8 years crosses its locked in until 65. I'm not from the US just to be clear so I'm sure its different there.
As for my house, I did live in one of the units some years ago but in my country you don't get tax benefits for that. Right now I'm living on my wife's property( we both came into the marriage with our own assets) who is also mortgage-free. When your spouse operates in much the same manner you do when it comes to finances, it's MUCH easier.
Becoming minimalist has been pretty easy for me. For one, I just don't get much joy out of spending money. I mean yeah, when I was younger I was big in video games, gadgets, going out and boozing, but that shit passes over with time. I still have a gaming PC but outside of that, I don't spend huge sums of money. I have like $1000 a month budget which takes care of my health insurance, groceries, electricity, internet, etc etc. My credit card is on $0 balance and I only use it to get cashback points and pay it off monthly. Yeah there's always the odd month where I'll go dinner or get takeout but I'm pretty fine making my own food. I just don't get the thrill of materialism/consumerism. I never really did, but now I'm like 'eh whatever' about most shit. I enjoy the peace of mind that comes with being debt-free and not running on the eternal hamster wheel.
And for many other people, work doesn't dominate their lives and they can still make enough to pay all their bills.

the problem with careers is that your life goes by really fast. when I worked my life went by like a flash like it was a few years. since I retired I feel like its been 40 years. I don't even fear death anymore. if you wanna fear death. work 40 hours a week and only have 4 days a month where you can do what you want. then retire at 60 or 65 and worry about all the money you worked a lifetime for cause you can't take it with you. that's why I spend every dime I get and settled for a free and easy lifestyle with no family. when I thought I was a father I stressed out nonstop worrying about its future. I never wanna experience that kind of anxiety ever again

I retired at 57 but it was because of my last job.... it was a job. 20 years before that i had a career job.
i have been retired now for 7 years. (never looked back)
At my age I know people working for a number of reasons , but about 20% of the people working between 60-65 are doing so , because they love what they do.
Quick store : a buddy of mine had storage units (hundreds) as well as a trucking business. Ran into health issues , he resolved them , and told me once that he plans
to work till 80. (strong as an ox) This past year , same age as me , he sold the units , and quit the trucking business.
When you get older things can change on the dime ... not sure why he did it , cause he loved what he did,, but something tells me , he just got tired ...
Knew another guy , much older than I am that runs a saw mill , had cancer, bounced back and is still working.
Some of these guys truly love what they do , and will do it till they are dead , money means nothing , it's the activity.
