Forget the stats, all the candidates have great stats.

Mavs are 2 games out of 3rd in the West, which would be an insane achievement with a roster which second best player is either Spencer Dinwiddie or Jalen Brunson.

Luka is doing what Embiid, Jokic and Tatum are doing, but with a significantly worse roster.

If Mavs get 3rd then there's no debate, Luka is the MVP.

Sure let's forget the stats because his stats don't compare to the top 3 guys.

The support isnt highly acclaimed, but it’s not a bad group overall. The idea he’s dragging G-leaguers to a good record is a fallacy.

Im instinctively skeptical of their playoff chances because they lack size/athleticism up front, but the more I look at it Im not sure theres a team in the West they cant match up with save for Phoenix. Altho a third straight battle with a healthy Clippers also wouldnt bode well.

We’ll see.

What?

They absolutely do

Luka 28, 9, 8

Embiid 30, 11, 4

Jokic 26, 13, 8

Luka arguably better stats than Embiid...probably better tbh

luka is basically 94 Hakeem right now. but instead of defense he substitutes it with playmaking. if he was more consistent from the free throw line he would be league mvp easily

Play style is very similar, but heart/mentality is polar opposite.

Luka fights tooth and nail when the chips are down, Harden packs it in and heads for the strip club.

Luka came into the season fat and wasn't that good early in the season so he really has no shot. He has been great the last two months though.

I think his shot selection needs to improve to win a MVP. In the future. Every time I watch him he takes some shots early in the clock that make me cringe.

His game style is not James Harden, it's more of a taller Chris Paul now, with a stepback.

Jokic is also setting a record bpm https://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/bpm_season.html

The Nuggets are 2-5 without him and the teams stats are night and day. https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/nuggets-record-with-and-without-jokic-2022

Meanwhile Mavericks are 8-9 without Doncic. Jokic has had a far worse squad this year.

Really?

Aaron Gordon is better than Powell for sure. If Gordon played with Luka he would look like the second coming of peak Blake Griffin.

Will Barton or Dorian Finney Smith? I'll go with Barton.

Monte Morris or Jalen Brunson? It's a wash.

They're similar poor rosters.

He's bounced back nicely from his poor start to the season. But overall, he will be lucky to make the all-NBA 1st team, and the only reason he might do so is because he is listed as a G and not a F.

Brunson is good, but he's short and not a good creator/passer. Also a liability on defense and have until now faltered in the playoffs.

I don't see him ever being a more than third option on a decent team.

He’s definitely had a great final half of the season.

Hes not quite gonna make the final cut for the award, but he’s clearly a top 5 guy by impact along with Lebron and a few others.

Why is it important who keeps up the best play over the entire season?

Do they give player of the game to the best player over 4 quarters?

Mavs are about to have the 3rd best record in the NBA, just beat Giannis, with not a single other player that will ever be an all-star.

Ok, you can make a claim for Jokic, you could make case for Giannis until tonight. You can not make a case for Embiid playing with Harden, Harris, etc or KD with Kyrie etc.

Jokic or Luka.

Give it to Luka, accept there is a new King.

Don't be petty.

It’s obviously all very subjective, and comes down to fairly frivolous things players cant even control, like who has the “worst supporting cast” and such.

Basically every player in the MVP race has a similar team record. Of them, I think Jokic’s supporting cast is the clear cut weakest. He also happens to be putting up historic advanced metrics.

To me, he’s the most deserving. But I think Luka has joined that second tier with Embiid and Giannis. And ofc Durant would be there as well if he’d played a few more games. You can make reasonable arguments for any of them.

To me the only guy with clear cut arguments for being above the rest right now is Joker.

I feel like Embiid is playing himself out of consideration and then Giannis played himself in, but got played out tonight, so that leaves .. Jokic.

Yeah but it’s not a race to see who can have the last good game of the season on national television - or at least it isnt supposed to be.

It’s supposed to be a body of work over the whole season.

On that criterion I have Joker number one, Embiid/Giannis/Luka number 2, and Durant number three (due to missing more time than the rest).
