Harder question than you think. I gave it a minute and don’t really have an answer. 12 Wade if you believe he was quietly as good as he was the 3 years before? 96 Pippen, 86 Mchale, rookie Magic in 80?
Its tough. Nobody stands out for sure.
Amare with Nash might be the most productive. It’s a thinker.

It's gotta be Magic in 1980, even if he was just a rookie. My next choice would be '86 McHale.

Dr J in 1983 has to be it. Moses won in 1983 and Dr J won it in 1981.

I was thinking of the same guys, McHale and Wade.
Amar'e was a beast that year with Nash. Those two put on a show.

Klay thompson in the 2014-15 season averaged almost 22 ppg in the rs.

12 Wade was the last year Wade was the guy we think of as Wade so yeah he's on the short list. If Shaq had won in 01 like many thought he should have, Kobe would be a common pick here I imagine.

Of course there’s a difference between best player who played on a team with an MVP and best teammate for an MVP.
I think Wade in 2013 fits this category better than 2012.
For any F1 folks, you’re looking for the ultimate Sergio Perez to pair with Max Verstappen.

Some good names ITT but '00 Kobe and '18 CP3 are very high up on the list.

Oscar comes to mind in '71. He finished 5th in MVP voting. In the playoffs he led the league in assists per game, and in the finals he put up 24/5/10 on 52%.
Frazier in 1970. Knicks won 60 games and the title. Reed won the MVP and FMVP, but Frazier came through HUGE in game 7, putting up 36/7/19 on 70%. Probably the greatest game 7 performance in league history given their opponent and having Reed hurt.

Amare averaged 30+/10+ on 55% shooting in the 2005 playoffs. He put up 37 ppg on prime Tim Duncan.

One could make the case for Bill Russell in 1957 when Bob Cousy won MVP

When Cowens won it in 72, Havlicek was first team, I think most people would rank Hondo much higher than Cowens all-time.

Russell, Hondo, and maybe Earl Monroe(Unseld rookie year) might be the only ones you can say a teammate was flat out better at basketball when a guy won mvp.

Some names that come to mind:
Russell in 1957
Havlicek in 1973
Magic in 1980
Wade in 2012
Westbrook in 2014
Paul in 2018
I'd probably give it to Havlicek in 1973. He was a better player than the MVP Cowens. And while Russell was better than Cousy he did miss a big chunk of that season. Other guys on the list were clear second options.

Russell missed games as a rookie but not to injury. Both he and KC Jones were on the Olympic team and since Summer in Australia is our winter it was during the season. The Summer Olympics were in December.

Feels odd to throw in Wade & Westbrook and leave out '71 Big O.
McHale was a beast in '86 as well, his postseason performance was a tier above '12 Wade or '14 Westbrook.

Havlicek was always a better player than Big Red but that year nobody doubted Cowens was the MVP. He was on fire all year.
If Havlicek didn’t smash up his shoulder in the playoffs they’d have gone to the Finals. Good for Knicks, bad for Lakers because I don’t think Celtics could beat LA that year whereas 1970s Walt Frazier was always completely dominant against Lakers guards.
