The league and PA need to agree on the fact that if people are claiming mental health issues, that's fine, you get paid. But you have to be reviewed by like let's say... 10 respected mental health counselors that are not on the payroll of anyone. Maybe 5 that the PA suggests and maybe 5 that the league suggests. It would be hard to prove they weren't getting kickbacks on the side, but you get the idea. If there is a majority consensus that the player is faking or they're not faking, then there you go, that's how you decide.

But seeking objective truth around mental health issues will be a tough one.

If the counselor is good enough they can typically diagnose you fairly quickly and see through your bullshit. There are a lot of bad counselors out there, but the ones that are good are usually razor sharp and they're not THAT uncommon.

But who's side is the NBA on?

They will be siding with the 76ers.

This shit could drag on for a long time.

Yep, definitely all that.

OR even just encourage players to save some money so that if they have to step away for a bit they're able to remain solvent financially.

I think the two ideas are equally practical.

Yeah, it's touchy to get on the subject of controlling someone else's money but the federal government does it, so why not the NBA? Especially when these guys shouldn't NEED the money being held to get by.

Maybe a forced 5% or 10% rainy day fund in your name that is accumulating interest while they hold it for you... that is released fully upon league retirement or something like that... idk. The PA would need to agree and come up with something.

But yeah.

I agree. Frankly most players should WANT savings/responsible spending structured into their contract. But guys are young and lacking life experience, and dont get the best life advice from the people around them.

But it’s a dubious precedent to set that as contract numbers go astronomically up, standards for missing time (while getting paid) are becoming lax.

Youre gonna end up with benches full of guys in street clothes making 500 million dollars. It’s not a viable business model.

Not to mention that in this particular case Simmons was OBVIOUSLY bullshitting, and sitting out simply to spite the team.

But that's the whole paradox. Why didn't the guy just shoot the damn basketball?

He has some mental issue. Everyone can see that.

Something upstairs just ain't right.

Lacking confidence in your basketball shot does not meet the threshold of “mental health crisis” that earns any sympathy from me.

But everyone is entitled to their perspective.

yes he is.
People forget that Simmons said before he couped out that he was not returning to the 6'ers while the 6'ers were trying to get him back.
He should lose the money , because up front he stated , he wanted nothing to do with the 6'ers.

I agree that there is a clear divide between so called 'mental health' issues and what is just the general human condition.

That aside, the kid is a professional basketball player and is afraid to shoot a basketball.

Good for him, Philly treated him like human garbage

He deserves compensation for what they did to his mental and physical health

what are the tangible claims for him receiving that kind of money besides saying "philly treated him like human garbage" ?
