Toody often has players that go right at him. Players actively avoid Smart.

He repeatedly restricts opponents best players to 0 points when they matchup. Players will actively try to get away from him, even if they have a height advantage they know how crafty he is and don’t want to commit an offensive foul.

He’s the only guy his height bar Ja who can protect the rim when necessary despite having a fairly average vertical on ball, he just gets there by force of will or something off it (unrelated but see dunk on Rudy (c’s at jazz), it’s just stupid)

His ability to rectify a lost cause in crucial moments isn’t luck it’s him collecting data during the first three quarters and exploiting it when it’s needed. The reason he doesn’t run away with it stat wise is because he adapts to the threat, which imo is more valuable than an immobile shot blocker who can’t do much about a Steph, Trae or Dame who pull up from wherever they like. He tires bigs out, knows when to dig and when to double, lulls them into a false sense of security first then bang he’s just ripped the ball and made a game winning play.

He doesn’t take possessions off, he can’t rely on sheer athleticism but does have freakish core strength when he’s in the post guarding a big. He is as labelled - smart. He couldn’t be more deserving imo, him and Jrue are just insane for their height and dimensions idk how they don’t get more acclaim than they do.
