View Full Version : How good was it to score 22ppg on 45% from 3 as a shooting guard in the early 90s?

I'm talking about Drazen Petrovic of course, now with the Euro 75 debate.

Petrovic is on most lists as first team, but looking in, his stats are not that amazing.

Unless you look at them in context.

It's basically something like 22/4/4, but what pops out is shooting 45% from 3 and that is just insane in the early 90s.

Drazen was 10th in 1991-92 in 3 pointers made, but if we only look at first options and not specialists we have:

Glen Rice
Reggie Miller
Tim Hardaway
Clyde Drexler
Drazen Petrovic

That's good company, however it gets better, Drazen was 2nd in the league in percentage, a whopping 3% ahead of a star specialist like Dale Ellis and 5% ahead of stars like Stockton and Bird (last season).

I think its safe to say that Drazen was a unique shooter of his time, not quite Steph Curry like, but close.

Even his scoring average was better than it appears.

If you look at the early 90s, all of the shooting guards of that era, except MJ, such as Drexler, Reggie, Ritchmond all have seasons averaging 20ppg in the early 90s.

Consider also that Drazen shot 50% from the field and only took 3 attempts pr. game from 3, so it's not like he couldn't score more probably.

Then you could make a case that Drazen was actually the second best offensive shooting guard for a few seasons, which is a very different case than his stats might suggest.

Look at Terry Porter's 90' and 92' Playoff runs - he was Damian Lillard including threes

He shot 53% on threes (6 attempts) in the 92' WCF (26/5/8) and that's just 1 series - he played like that for the entire Western Playoffs of 90' and 92' (Finals runs)

Lots of underrated smaller guards from that era.
