Of course they can't be completely ignorant but it seems to me they got a bunch of assistant coaches who are just wizards at X&Os. Like Nick Nurse, guy was an assistant for years. Best bet he knew his X&Os way before he became head coach.

Adjustments
Match ups
Xs and Os

The worst coach ever in terms of the first two I've seen is Doc. That's why he's choked so many 3-1, 3-2 series leads. At some point, that rah, rah stuff doesn't work and has to be replaced with legit adjustments.

Like any great leader, a coach must have a vision

They need a vision for the team's style of play - aka which style will maximize chemistry and teammate fits, so each guy can "play their game" and have maximum impact.. This might require some guys taking a step back for the overall synergy of the team

these things require a high-level understanding of each player's skillset and capability.

Once a head coach has a good vision for the team, part of remaining job becomes delegating to assistants to make it happen and trouble-shooting when obstacles to the vision arise.
