Good. Defensive leader of the best defense in the NBA. There might be better defenders but that's always a strong case. Now I want to see Time Lord take it next year. I don't think teammates have ever won it in back to back years.

I feel like the timing of these awards is like a curse.

I remember the somber ceremony when Dirk got that MVP shortly after being upset by the Warriors in the first round.

Smart just got destroyed by Kyrie Irving. Granted they won which is great for the team, but doesnt exactly validate the voters’ choice.

I dont really believe someone his size can be the actual best defensive player, altho that’s not technically the name of the award, it’s simply “player of the year” which suggests a narrative element as well.

Anyway congrats to him.

Kyrie did not destroy Marcus. Marcus guarded Kyrie with the ball in his hands on 26 possessions in Game 1. Kyrie got off five shots and made two of them, both contested 3’s, to go along with four free throws for a whopping 10 points.

Smart isn’t the best defender in the league but there should be no one doubting he’s a ridiculous defender.

He was late on one of those 3s but other than that he did an amazing job on defense in that game.

I guess it counts as "contested" but Irving had an easy shot there.
