COTM, Mitchell and Gobert? Where do they go from here?

Tony Jones is saying they're (ownership/management) are fully behind Mitchell and if anyone is getting traded it'll be Gobert given his age and contract. Said at least 1 starter is getting moved on.

I know they've said the Mavs want Gobert, but you're probably having to take Hardaway Jr and Bertans in a deal to make that work and Bertans hasn't been a good player since he got his de and he's still got 3 more years left on it.

Toronto and GS are supposedly interested too, Toronto might get you Siakim if you're super lucky, GS, not sure why they'd want him, but you'd have to take Wiggins and maybe ask for Wiseman too?

Charlotte and Atlanta could be destinations for Gobert too, Charlotte would have to send us Hayward back as I can't see us wanting Dozier and maybe with someone like PJ Washington in there too, Atlanta maybe you can do Gobert for Capella and Bogdanovic which still gives you a good defensive C and another shooter to put with Mitchell and run things basically the same again.

John Hollinger posted his Rudy trades, had similar ideas to me

Charlotte

Gobert and Rudy Gay for Hayward/PJ Washington/#13, #15, 2027 1st rounder and 2029 1st rounder.

Atlanta

Gobert and Bogdanovic for Capela, Collins, Bogdanovic, Johnson, Pick #16

Toronto

Gobert for OG Anunoby, Birch and a S&T Thad Young/Chris Boucher, 2023 1st rounder and another future 1st rounder

OR

Gobert for Siakim

New York

Gobert for Fournier, Reddish, Noel, Pick #11, 2023 1st rounder and Dallas 2023 1st rounder. Could also include Mitchell Robinson as a S&T

Memphis

Gobert for De'Anthony Melton, Xavier Tillman, John Konchar, Ziaire Williams, Pick #22 and #29.

Snyder safe too! No doubt they'll go with Mitchell unless he asks out. 1 starter would be Conley. He won't be easy to move. Royce is close to Mitchell. Lots of teams will be interested in Gobert. Most of them should be. Need expiring contracts, young guys, picks and assets. It's a tank if Gobert is traded. They will be awful

don't need vets unless they are expiring. They aren't winning with Mitchell. Hayward having to come back would be funny though

Looks like Memphis would have a big trade exception to. I like that one that best. Don't take on big contracts. Have to trade Bojan, Gay, Conley, Clarkson etc. if he goes. It's a tank. Lose as much as possible and hope they get someone that can carry them again. Mitchell isn't that guy

I’ve heard the Jazz like De’Andre Hunter’s game, and he’s, theoretically, what they need more of moving forward if Mitchell is whom they decide to build around. (https://theathletic.com/3297816/2022/05/09/atlanta-hawks-mailbag-donovan-mitchell-rudy-gobert/?source=nbatw) Utah needs more perimeter defense, maybe worse than Atlanta, if you can actually imagine that after what we watched this season.

https://kslsports.com/486294/ainge-is-the-right-architect-for-jazz-restructure/

the fact that COTM still has a job makes me wonder about Ainge, Smith and Zanik

Mitchell is the younger, cheaper option, and has yet to enter his prime, but few around the NBA believe the guard will sign another contract with the Jazz when his current deal expires in 2025.

but the way he ended the year after the all star break is very worrisome. What the **** was that? From the best ball of your career to the worst. This should be the only thing being talked about. Seems like his bff Royce was right there with him too

Or, should Ainge retool the team using faces around the Jazz’s two centerpieces? Mike Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic, Jordan Clarkson, Royce O’Neale, and Rudy Gay should all carry some value as trade assets, but is it enough to push the roster into contender status?

Gay has value if you throw in assets to get rid of him sure. Royce and Conley might not have much either

Can the Jazz coach and CEO find that same cohesion in Utah that Udoka and Stevens found in Boston, or will Snyder opt few a new opportunity elsewhere this summer?

Can only hope COTM does their work for them. Get compensation too!

He’s also responsible for drafting Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart, breakout big men Robert and Grant Williams, and second-year guard Payton Pritchard, who like Brown, was considered a reach on draft night.

while Dante went to the Jazz before Smart and Randle :facepalm

That isn’t to say Ainge didn’t have his share of misses, either. Guerschon Yabusele (16) and Ante Zizic (23) were both first-round busts in 2016, as was Romeo Langford (14) in 2019.

everyone has misses. How much you hitting is what matters and he has a lot. Jazz have had way too many misses while hitting big with Gobert and Mitchell. Imagine if Gobert had spent his early prime alongside Millsap? Demarre? Smart? McCollum(instead of Burke)...Hayward might have stayed and not got hurt?

With no player or team options on their roster, the Jazz will have a pretty straightforward 2022 offseason. The restricted contracts of Eric Paschall (https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/pascher01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) and Trent Forrest (https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/forretr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) could get matched. While Paschall and Forrest are NBA-caliber players, they were not a large part of Utah’s rotation this season. If they receive large contracts elsewhere, Utah will probably let them walk. Charlotte could look at Paschall as a solid wing/big hybrid, which is a need on the Hornets’ current roster.

I could see them matching Paschall cuz bff. Forrest is nice with his size, D and running the offense but unless he develops a shot he's only worth so much plus they have Butler and Nickeil now too

As for the unrestricted free agents, Hassan Whiteside (https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/whiteha01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) and Danuel House (https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/houseda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) are the only prospects on Utah’s roster. House should not be considered in Charlotte due to his lack of impact on the rotation, but Whiteside could provide incredible value as a defensive, rebound-oriented, low-usage big man. Whiteside could slide into the starting lineup if another big-name center does not venture to Charlotte, and he could be a temporary solution to Charlotte’s center problem.

House was great! Please sign Whiteside as your starter!!!

At this juncture, Bradley Beal and Donovan Mitchell are both expected to remain committed to Washington and Utah, (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10036706-early-nba-free-agency-buzz-intel-on-deandre-ayton-zach-lavine-and-more) respectively, this summer. But if any trade request did arrive, the Hawks could create as strong an offer as any suitor.

To me if you trade Mitchell it has to be something like this. A vet ready to come in and compete

Hassan Whiteside: I give it a 0% chance that he returns to the team. He was an on-court upgrade over the departed Derrick Favors in the regular season, but never scored more than three points in any of Utah’s six playoff games. He’s a journeyman at this point in his career, and he’ll either sign with a team he feels will have a better chance of getting out of the first round for the vet minimum, or if a team will go beyond the minimum, he’ll wind up there regardless of their playoff hopes.

assuming you think Udoka can stay on the floor he earned a shot. Bring in a vet behind him

Danuel House Jr.: He was a bright spot after signing midway through the season. He’s a 6-foot-6 wing who played solid perimeter defense and hit 41.5% from 3. He’s ideal for Quin Snyder’s system, and I expect they’ll try to figure out how to keep him.

No Bird rights but he not COTM should be back

Eric Paschall (restricted): He had more DNP’s than most of Jazz Nation would have liked to have seen (and yet he appeared in 58 games). When he did play, he showed good hustle and energy. His 3-point shooting has improved every year, but most importantly, he and Donovan Mitchell are very good friends. He’s another guy I expect they’ll try to keep, and the matching rights will help.

I'd want to go where I could play. He's a good energy guy at the end of the bench if he wants the role

Trent Forrest (restricted): It’s a sign on what a Jenga tower this roster was that his injury really hurt the Jazz in the playoffs. They missed his ability to move the ball and defend off the bench. The only way I see them keeping both Forrest and Jared Butler is if they are ready to move Mike Conley and start Mitchell at point guard.

Yeah I can see Forrest and Butler both coming off the bench in the rotation. Nickeil in the mix as well on the wing

Bojan Bogdanovic: A case could be made that Bogdanovic is the third most important player on the team, after only the All-Stars. He’s the Jazz’s second leading scorer, and the Jazz were 4-9 in the games he missed. Some teams could see him as that missing veteran piece, a 33-year-old outside shooter unafraid to go inside. What adds to his value is that team often want to trade longer contracts for players on expiring deals to give them flexibility. If the Jazz do move Bogey, they’d need to find other ways to make up for his scoring.

keep him. Move him to 6th man

Juancho Hernangomez (non-guaranteed): Another midseason acquisition, Hernangomez showed enough in practice for Snyder to play him over Rudy Gay in the playoffs. They like his length and ability to hit the three, so I could see them keeping him, but his $7.4 million salary is also an ideal throw-in to make a bigger trade work.

he was great too. Ideally he's the back up 4 with someone they don't have yet starting. O'Neale back to the wing where he belongs

Jared Butler: I think they like him. I expect a big sophomore jump, if Snyder lets him play. Too bad the second-round draft rules didn’t allow them to get him that third year.

He's good. He's the main reason you trade Conley

Jordan Clarkson: His 3-point shooting was atrocious, and he had his least efficient season since he joined the Jazz. He went inside more toward the end of the season, which certainly helped save his efficiency. In all, he posted the second best +/- numbers on the team, behind only Rudy Gobert, and best on the whole team from February 1 on. As one Jazz beat writer once said, they may need to trade Clarkson to save Quin from himself, as no one on the team has a more green light, even when he has one of his 3-16 shooting nights.

Save us from COTM please!. Him and Clarkson need to go!

Rudy Gay: In the tradition of Ed Davis or Jeff Green, Gay was another veteran signing that just didn’t work out. They’ll do what they can to move him. Tragically, he has never made it out of the first round of the playoffs in his entire career.

played his best ball at the end of the year and still got benched. If they had a different coach maybe he'd fit?

Mike Conley: Conley is a tremendous teammate, and a positive in nearly all lineups. But starting two 6-foot-1 guards in this day and age means no conference finals. The backcourts of the final four teams: Boston has 6-foot-3 Marcus Smart and 6-foot-6 Jaylen Brown; Miami has 6-foot Kyle Lowry and 6-foot-5 Max Strus; GSW has 6-foot-2 Steph Curry and 6-foot-6 Klay Thompson; and Dallas has 6-foot-1 Jalen Brunson and 6-foot-7 Luka Doncic. The only way I see Conley staying is if Mitchell is unexpectedly traded in some blockbuster.

I could see Conley off the bench but Butler needs to play and Mitchell needs to be at the one or next to a bigger 1. If Forrest could shoot they'd have the perfect guy!

Royce O’Neale: His numbers don’t look that much different than previous years, but his defense failed the eye test more and more this season. For many stretches he was the only non-French guy on the floor playing defense, and it was his clutch 3 that got them a win in the first round. I think it’s 50/50 if he’s on the team next year.

he's close with Mitchell and they both sucked after the break. That is the story. WTF? Move him to the wing and possibly the bench. Love Royce!

Udoka Azubuike (team option for 2023-24): His development’s been slow and his injuries are a concern. He does have potential, but this is the guy that basically cost Dennis Lindsey his job when he drafted him over Desmond Bane. (I guarantee 100% the Jazz would have made the second round this year and maybe WCF if they had selected Bane instead of Dok.)

COTM cost him his job. They needed a center to develop not another guard that COTM wouldn't play

Donovan Mitchell: When Mitchell was drafted, his defensive potential made his ceiling look like the next Dwyane Wade. Now it’s feeling more like Damian Lillard. The Mavs defense exposed his offensive weaknesses and he has a lot of work to do if he wants to be in the conversation as a top-10 NBA player. A multi-year All-Star, he’s currently in the Top 25 range. The sky is still the limit for him but he needs some — dare I say it — Mamba mentality to get there.

already has the Mamba mentality. Shoot, shoot and shoot some more

My guess is that come October, this Jazz team will still feature Mitchell and Gobert, along with about six of the other guys currently on the roster. The rest will be new faces. The front office has a lot of work to do.

the fact that COTM apparently can do no wrong like Jerry Sloan I have little faith in the front office

The Jazz has offered to extend Snyder’s current contract, which has two years left including his option for the 2023-24, sources said. The organization would also welcome Snyder simply returning on his current contract for next season, (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34017536/as-coach-quin-snyder-future-remains-unclear-possibility-exists-end-eight-year-tenure-utah-jazz-sources-say) sources said.

There’s no timetable on reaching a decision and talks are expected to continue, sources said. Conversations have largely been centered on philosophical issues and how the sides can work together moving forward with a franchise trying to make the next step in Western Conference contention, (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34017536/as-coach-quin-snyder-future-remains-unclear-possibility-exists-end-eight-year-tenure-utah-jazz-sources-say) sources said.

Snyder expressed no interest in discussing open jobs in the marketplace this offseason, sources said, but sitting out a season would certainly leave him one of the most sought-after candidates in 2023 and beyond. (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34017536/as-coach-quin-snyder-future-remains-unclear-possibility-exists-end-eight-year-tenure-utah-jazz-sources-say) Snyder has been recovering from hip surgery since the Jazz were eliminated in six games by Dallas in the Western Conference quarterfinals.

And right now, the roster has a lot of questions without a lot of ready-made answers. League sources say multiple teams have called the Jazz to inquire about the trade availability of Mitchell, only to be given a firm no. (https://theathletic.com/3350824/2022/06/06/utah-jazz-quin-snyder-coach/) The Jazz have made it clear they intend on building a roster around Mitchell. The only thing that could possibly pry Mitchell from the Jazz at this point is a monstrous offer. They simply don’t have the intention of trading him.

– via Tony Jones @ The Athletic (https://theathletic.com/3350824/2022/06/06/utah-jazz-quin-snyder-coach/)

But nearly everyone else, including star center Rudy Gobert, has some sort of availability on the trade market. League sources suggest Gobert and small forward Bojan Bogdanovic have been two names that have garnered significant interest from teams. (https://theathletic.com/3350824/2022/06/06/utah-jazz-quin-snyder-coach/) The Jazz expect to be a team that will be aggressive on the trade market.

– via Tony Jones @ The Athletic (https://theathletic.com/3350824/2022/06/06/utah-jazz-quin-snyder-coach/)

I'd push Conley and Clarkson. maybe Gay and others depending on who is the new coach and what those guys bring back in their deals. Bojan to 6th man. He does one thing well. He's made for the role

Xiao Yao You

The Jazz are likely going to be aggressive on the trade market and could make a trade that affects the top of their roster. At the same time, sources tell The Athletic, the Jazz have no plans on relinquishing their status as a year in and year out playoff team in the Western Conference. (https://theathletic.com/3350824/2022/06/06/utah-jazz-quin-snyder-coach/) And they have every intention of trying to continue their years-long pursuit of putting themselves in a position to compete for a deep playoff run, even a title run.

Seven names comprise the initial list of head-coaching possibilities, (https://theathletic.com/3350824/2022/06/06/utah-jazz-quin-snyder-coach/) several league sources tell The Athletic.
– via Tony Jones @ The Athletic (https://theathletic.com/3350824/2022/06/06/utah-jazz-quin-snyder-coach/)

Phoenix assistant Kevin Young and Milwaukee Bucks assistant Charles Lee are also two names who hold interest from the Jazz, (https://theathletic.com/3350824/2022/06/06/utah-jazz-quin-snyder-coach/) according to league sources, as does Boston Celtics assistant Will Hardy. Adrian Griffin, an assistant for the Toronto Raptors, and father of lotto prospect A.J. Griffin out of Duke, has also been mentioned.

– via Tony Jones @ The Athletic (https://theathletic.com/3350824/2022/06/06/utah-jazz-quin-snyder-coach/)

Sources say that list could expand, and that, as of this minute, is a preliminary one. But the Jazz have a base from which to work when they sit down and ready themselves for the interview process. Internal franchise discussions, sources say, are expected to start as soon as Monday morning, but the Jazz are expected to take their time in the process (https://theathletic.com/3350824/2022/06/06/utah-jazz-quin-snyder-coach/).

Think Andy Larsen has it with the reports Donovan is "unsettled"

"In other words: Donovan Mitchell wants to have a significant say in who the next Jazz's head coach is

To spell out the situation:

CAA-represented Donovan had CAA-represented Woj release that he was "surprised and disappointed" about Quin's departure (something that's been rumored for months, exactly 0 people are surprised) so that CAA-represented Johnnie Bryant can get the job

If the Jazz FO say "hey, we want to decide who the coach is, even if it doesn't please you" then Woj can release a further statement about how Donovan is even further unsettled, and they can use it as pretext to try to leave Utah.

It's a power play. Donovan has a lot of power."

It wasn’t all that surprising really. Ask anybody with even second- or third-hand knowledge of the mindset among Jazz brass, and they’ll tell you that majority owner Ryan Smith is laser focused on keeping Mitchell happy in Utah. And as that ESPN piece pointed out, it’s not all that uncommon for star players to operate by their own set of rules or get unique perks.

the problem is this star player is only a star because Gobert has made the team good. He would be Sexton without the big man carrying them

But if the answer to any of those questions is yes, then Smith might have unintentionally created a different set of problems for himself and his ball club.

which I've been saying since at least him forcing his way onto the floor in the playoffs last year which of course eventually was part of their downfall. Imagine a doctor knowing best :facepalm

Bottom line: Mitchell is already great and is likely going to get better. He just finished his most efficient season ever, while also posting career bests in most all-in advanced metrics, and certain playmaking measures to boot. His postseason was a rough one, without question, as he was tested greatly on both ends of the floor, but overall he is a top-25 NBA player with plenty of room to continue developing.

post all star break was rough and really should be the only thing being talked about. How'd he go from his best ball to worst like that while taking his biddy O'Neale with him?

Two sources with knowledge of Snyder’s thinking said his departure was a result of nothing more than his wanting to go in a different direction and take a step away from basketball for the foreseeable future. There were no ultimatums from either side, no demands on how to shape the roster. The Jazz made multiple offers of various structures to extend Snyder’s tenure, sources said, but were consistently rebuffed. There is an expectation in league circles that whenever San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich inevitably steps away from his own head coaching post, Snyder will be the leading candidate to replace the fabled leader. (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10037882-latest-nba-offseason-buzz-what-would-it-take-for-chicago-to-land-rudy-gobert) Snyder is said to be held in high regard by Spurs CEO R.C. Buford.

New York Knicks associate head coach Johnnie Bryant—who played collegiately at the University of Utah from 2005-08 and developed a close relationship with Mitchell during the second half of Bryant’s stint as a Jazz player development coach from 2012-20—is considered to be a leading candidate for the position (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10037882-latest-nba-offseason-buzz-what-would-it-take-for-chicago-to-land-rudy-gobert).

There are questions around the league about whether Jazz CEO of basketball operations Danny Ainge will be amenable to catering to Mitchell and his representation. But if Mitchell and Jazz chairman Ryan Smith are aligned on Bryant, or any other candidate, league sources with knowledge of the situation don’t expect Ainge to stand in the way. (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10037882-latest-nba-offseason-buzz-what-would-it-take-for-chicago-to-land-rudy-gobert) Ainge is not known to be someone who scours the market of the NBA’s up-and-coming head coaches.

The Utah Jazz have not entertained any overtures from rival teams on a trade for Donovan Mitchell, but they have engaged teams on talks for Rudy Gobert.

The Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors and Chicago Bulls have been mentioned as trade candidates for Gobert.

The Jazz would only consider a trade of Gobert that improves their odds of advancing further in the postseason as they have no intention of rebuilding.

The future of Mitchell with the Jazz is uncertain, particularly following the exit of Quin Snyder.

If true Gobert isn't going anywhere or the front office is delusional. They are a lottery team with Mitchell leading them. Hard to see it any other way. Gobert's impact can't be denied no matter how much you want to blame all of their issues on him

"We have spent the last few weeks talking, Quin and I, a lot about a lot of different things," team CEO Danny Ainge said during a news conference Monday, a day after Snyder announced he was leaving. "And I think it's pretty clear, we desperately wanted him to stay. And at the same time, I've walked away from coaching and I walked away from being a general manager after 18 years in Boston, and so I trust that Quin knows more what's best for him and his family, much more than we do."

Hard for me to have much faith in the front office despite Ainge's track record when Snyder had to leave. He should have been fired after the bubble certainly if not before. So this is on Lindsey, the Millers, the new owner, Zanik and Ainge!

They wasted Gobert's prime trying to tank which they did badly thanks to Rudy; wasted 2 years with Rubio and Favors spotting up in the corner; haven't had a starting PF since and Snyder hasn't coached in the last 3 playoffs either.

Jake Fischer: I do believe they’re internally weighing Rudy Gobert trade options, and externally making calls and contacting teams, and least on the preliminary stages, so far. It won't be difficult. Almost every team in the league could use him. Who has the best package of expiring deals, young talent and assets. Or you keep him and plan on where his statue goes. One thing I read about Johnnie Bryant is his X and O's aren't at a high level and it's expected if he's hired they need a high level experienced assistant to help him with that.

Not sure if someone they already have like Alex Jensen is capable there or not, but sounds like Bryant is good at working with players and helping them improve as individuals, whether he's got the ability (or experience) in running a whole team looks questionable at the moment.

He's also the main guy working with Gobert who has carried the franchise the past 7 years. Big men don't get hired as much as little guys for NBA head jobs though

Bryant helped Millsap, Hayward and Mitchell improve greatly even before he was hired by Utah in Millsap's case. So we already know that is his strong suit. He also played locally here. I just can't imagine he is the best hire other than he's Mitchell's guy and that isn't the way to make a great hire. I'm sure he'd have some vet coaches around him as would Jensen and any of the guys without head coaching experience. That is pretty standard anymore I think

I'm all for a young guy with fresh ideas but my pick is Vogel.

Rumour is they're the official ones, not practice. Ugly ass things, and yep, white is the only one that looks OK except for the trim. Other two look like practice jerseys for sure.

I knew they were rebranding towards the black, white, yellow colours, but the yellow looks like a highlighter instead of the classic gold yellow type colour. Black and white is pretty hard to stuff up, but looks like they managed it!

As far as the idea of a Donovan Mitchell trade coming down the pike, league sources do feel that it’s a matter of “when and not if” with Mitchell eventually asking to go to a “glamour market” like New York or Miami. (https://www.actionnetwork.com/nba/nba-intel-trade-rumors-draft-intel-early-free-agency-targets-2022-matt-moore?shortlink=ugcbdrpp&af_sub1=601698164&c=af-newsletter&pid=af-newsletter&deep_link_value=action://article?id=601698164&af_adset=nba-intel-trade-rumors-draft-intel-early-free-agency-targets-2022-matt-moore) But in the short term, there’s skepticism it will happen. New Jazz owner Ryan Smith is said to be extremely dedicated to keeping and building around Mitchell. Which, of course, is going to mean moving Rudy Gobert as it’s become apparent that relationship is untenable on-court and off-court.

While Gobert’s potential arrival in Chicago would provide a significant upgrade on the defensive end, it could also put the status of starting center Nikola Vucevic in jeopardy. Bulls insider K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago recently discussed this potential issue on a recent episode of the Bulls Talk Podcast, and apparently, he doesn’t believe that the Gobert rumors have legs. Johnson’s sources also claim that for his part, Vucevic believes he’s not going anywhere: “I, personally, have not put a lot of stock into these rumors … There is a lot of noise out there. It’s certainly fair to speculate what the Jazz might do. Before, I personally made a couple of calls on the topic, and I was told that there’s not much going on right now,” Johnson said (h/t Elias Schuster of Bleacher Nation). “Things can obviously change in this league – always change in this league. I can also tell you, from my understanding, Nikola Vucevic is under the impression he’s going to be here.” (https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-rumors-nikola-vucevics-true-feelings-on-chicago-future-amid-rudy-gobert-trade-whispers/)

The coaching candidates (https://kslsports.com/487746/jazz-head-coaching-interview-tracker/) linked to the Jazz are mostly who everyone thought, plus a few surprises like former Lakers head coach Frank Vogel and G-League coach Jason Terry.

why would Vogel be a surprise? He has to be considered one of the most proven guys available. I'd have been surprised if he wasn't on the list. Atkinson and Ham might have been too if COTM had decided earlier or the front office had did what they should have did long ago and fired him! I hadn't thought of Terry but he'll probably be a good coach.

Ainge has made some unique hires and if he were to lure Wright from retirement that would fit right in with the time he hired Brad Stevens from the college ranks.

the problem is Stevens is an exception. Most college coaches have sucked in the NBA. Maybe that is changing? The college game is maybe becoming more NBA like so the transition is easier? Now that players are getting paid in college it may even things out going forward for sure

Okay, here’s the big one. If the Jazz want to persuade Donovan to stay in Utah by competing for titles, keeping Rudy makes the most sense. Trading Rudy with the hope of still contending short-term requires a lot of luck. Trading Rudy will not bring back another top-25 player. And trading Rudy is going to have major ramifications on defense. Maybe Don or Danny Ainge, or other powers-that-be are weighing other factors with winning — they could aim to be competitive enough for the next few years while reshaping the team’s DNA. But that’s a fine line to walk if Donovan is zeroed in on Titles, whether in Utah or elsewhere.

Mitchell needs to think about playing D and making players around him better. Titles come if you do the work. Talking doesn't win anything as we've seen

The hope is this: the Jazz give the Rudy and Donovan core one more shot. They nail their trades and signings this season. They get more athletic and bolster their perimeter defense. They may have to mortgage their future a bit — most contenders do. But I still believe a Rudy and Don team with better perimeter defense can contend for a Title. The other part of this hopeful scenario is that a new coach, some fresh faces, and increased winning smoothes over chemistry issues.

new coach being the key

If the Jazz can trade Conley, one of Bojan or Clarkson, and the picks from Toronto to get, say Harrison Barnes, and a serviceable starting center… a lineup of Mitchell, Trent Jr., Anunoby, Barnes, and X is intriguing, at the least.

Clarkson needs to go regardless. Hard to imagine the new coach is going to allow him to do what COTM allowed him to do. Conley needs to go unless Mitchell is dealt and Gobert stays

Again, let’s say the Jazz are able to convert the additional assets along with Conley for a player like Harrison Barnes and a center. Does a core of Mitchell, Hunter, Barnes, and Collins appeal more than the Toronto variation?

whichever deal gets expiring contracts and assets is the best one. Trying to win now with Mitchell while trading Gobert? :oldlol:

The Hornets desperately need a player like Gobert, but the Jazz aren’t bringing back Hayward, and Miles Bridges and Terry Rozier aren’t the type of player Utah needs. PJ Washington and draft picks would be useful to the Jazz, but a deal with Charlotte probably needs a third team.

who says they aren't bringing back Hayward? Ainge had him. New owners. New front office. New players. The guy is good if overpaid and injury prone. Mitchell has never been as good as Hayward was his last year here. Fans would have to get over it finally! :facepalm

The Grizzlies could offer Stephen Adams, De’Anthony Melton, and a trove of picks or prospects … which is just, fine? There are likely better offers out there.

Gobert with Jaren Jackson and Morant! That would be must see tv.

The Jazz hire Johnnie Bryant. It just makes a lot sense. The organization likes him. His camaraderie with players is what this locker room needs. And his ability to tell Donovan no, while retaining his respect is huge. While Bryant may lack experience, adding a former head coach to his staff could alleviate that.

not sure anyone can tell Mitchell no when the owner is enamored with him

The Jazz trade Mike Conley, Rudy Gay, and one of Bojan Bogdanovic or Jordan Clarkson. We’ve talked about Conley’s likely departure. Gay also seems likely to move given how last year went — unless no other teams want him either. Bogey and Clarkson showed up for the Jazz against Dallas, but they both have trade value, and the team simply needs to trade some offense for defense. It may come down to who has a better market.

Gay just might need a new coach. Not sure anyone else wants him without additional assets after last year

Next season is better than the last. Look, there are a lot of ways this coming season could go wrong. Losing Quin is going to hurt. Losing Rudy, Mike, Bojan, or Clarkson will hurt. Donovan could demand a trade. I don’t need to list all the reasons. But I’m an optimist, and following a sports team is more enjoyable with some hope. This team has reasons to hope. They have a lot of talent and are just one season removed from having the best record in the league. The team knows what its issues are, and it has tools to fix them. It could be a really fun season! It will be an interesting one at the least — and hey, we’re here to be entertained.

A new coach and 6th man is going to be a breath of fresh air! Trading a statue would hurt!

Xiao Yao You

https://saltcityhoops.com/whats-next-for-the-jazz-fundamental-issues-trade-ideas-and-reasons-for-hope/

In six straight playoff appearances (which is an impressive feat, by the way), the Jazz have failed to push past the second round. The team as we know it has fundamental cracks in the armor. I promised we wouldn’t dwell on the negative here, so suffice it to say that this team simply can’t run it back. If Don and Rudy return, that means a big shakeup with the remaining starters, and probably the bench, too.

They can run it back because the coach is gone. That is the biggest shakeup you can make outside Gobert and Mitchell. It should have been the obvious move. Star players are hard to come by. You rarely get better by trading them. COTM has been out coached in the last 3 playoffs so I'd hope he is replaceable!

It’s clear the Jazz are operating with Mitchell at its core, in more ways than one. Nearly every big decision the organization faces ties to Mitchell. For example:

that will hurt them just like getting Rubio because Hayward said it was ok. At least make decisions based on your best player not the coattail riders. Where was Mitchell and O'Neale after the all star break? That needs to be answered before you build a franchise around a guy that has never shown he can carry one

The point guard position. Reports say that Donovan will be the starting point guard next season. This has long been the end-game for Mitchell, but its obvious ramification is that Mike Conley will move to the bench or be traded.

Need more size. I could see a bigger pg too while leaving Mitchell at the 2. Too bad Forrest can't shoot or they'd have their guy

Mitchell is only 25 years old, and yet has already been to the playoffs five times. He is surrounded by veteran players. Philosophically, the Jazz have to decide to either get younger (and likely worse in the short term), or reshuffle their older players to maximize their current window.

If Gobert goes all the seasoned vets have to go. They will be bad. Get young players and assets and hope you get someone to carry the franchise in the future. Don't see Mitchell being that guy sorry. Bad D and Iso? Maybe if you're Donic? Not Mitchell

Before we move on, let’s address a few elephants stomping around the room. One: there are pros and cons to giving a young player like Donovan keys to kingdom, and Dan Clayton covered a complicated situation with great nuance here (https://saltcityhoops.com/snyder-moves-on-but-philosophical-questions-linger/). Two: last season there was a clear lack of chemistry, and Donovan had some part to play in that. Three: there is the looming threat of Donovan demanding a trade at some point. As fans that have experienced the Gordon Hayward 4th of July, it’s easy to grab our pitchforks. Yes, last season was bad in many ways, and there’s potential for a lot more turmoil. But things can also turn the other direction fast. Look at this season’s Celtics. It was not long ago that Donovan was thought of most for his off-the-court good will, insane playoff performances, and superstar potential. It makes a lot of sense for the Jazz to build around him.

It makes sense from a marketing perspective and his age. Everyone wants him to be the guy but he never has been. Nothing that has happened on the court should tell anyone that they would be a good team the past 7 years or next year without Gobert though. Without COTM, Mitchell, Hayward, the Wizard sure. Gobert? :facepalm

Mike Conley had a great year, and a bad series. He remains a top-50 player who makes good things happen when he’s on the court. Here’s the key point: the Jazz lack length and perimeter defense. And this isn’t Mike’s fault — he’s a better defender than Donovan. But if Donovan is staying, it just makes sense to move him to point guard, and replace Mike with a longer defender. Conley could move to the bench, but it feels like a suboptimal use of resources given his salary and trade value. At this point it just seems very likely he’s traded.

I could see him off the bench if it wasn't for Butler and to a lesser degree Forrest. Butler is good. He should get a chance to come off the bench this year

The Knicks could package Julius Randle or Evan Fournier with assets. Randle doesn’t seem ideal, despite being one season removed from 2nd team All-NBA. The Jazz could try to recoup his value for a later trade, or try a 3-team deal. Fournier has length and is a career 38% 3-point shooter at volume. He’s not without flaws, but is the type of player the Jazz could target. The Knicks can also offer a flyer on little-used athlete, Cam Reddish. Or they can attach assets the Jazz can use on another deal.

Fournier makes some sense if Rudy stays. Not sure it helps the D though. I think Randle could be a great fit with Gobert. He doesn't shoot as well as you'd like but I'm not sure it matters much. He's a playmaking 4. Could thrive with Rudy's rim protection and Mitchell not really being a pg they could use they playmaking from elsewhere. An actual PF starting for Utah! :applause:

The Clippers are reportedly shopping Marcus Morris, who is another wing that can shoot. It would certainly hurt to help a rival, but what if the Jazz can get Morris and one other wing from LA’s endless supply? Seriously, you could throw a dart blindfolded at their roster and find a useful wing.

could add some toughness that they lack

Count me in on team Royce. Oh, he’s also best friends with Donovan, which probably means he’s not going anywhere.

Yep. Let him play on the wing where he belongs rather off the bench or starting

Bojan is a tricky case. You can pencil him in for for a reliably efficient 18 points a game. If Mike Conley leaves, his secondary offensive becomes even more important. And while he’s not an athletic defender, he has size. He brought admirable defensive effort in the last two postseasons against both Luka and Kawhi. He’s also 33 and has positive trade value. Bojan’s fate could depend on what other moves are made first and what offers other teams make for him. Here are a few scenarios to consider:

6th man. He does one thing well. Let him take over Clarkson's role

Reckon Ainge would push for Hunter instead of Heurter.. He's not consistent, but has the tools to be a quality perimeter defender. Capela gives you 60% of what Rudy does, but opens up a lot more financial flexibility since he makes half as much.

Adding Hunter in throws off the $, so we could chuck Rudy Gay back into the deal so it's be

Gobert
Gay

For
Collins
Capela
Hunter
16th pick

Collins is still iffy defensively and can't create his own offense, but he'll work in a system. Also potentially opens up the opportunity to trade Bogey for a better guard to put next to Mitchell who can run from the 1 spot. Would give you a 5 of

Mitchell
Bogey Trade
Hunter
Collins
Capela

Conley off the bench as your 6th man with Clarkson, O'Neale, Hernangomez, Paschall, Alexander-Walker, Butler, 16th pick and Azibuke.

I like it better without Capela. The Hawks were awful defensively. The Jazz without Gobert are awful defensively. They will lose a lot of games. No seasoned vets unless they are expiring. If you must lose tank properly. Need to draft someone to carry Mitchell and Collins

I think Conley is gone. I can see him off the bench but Butler needs to play and there is Forrest and Nickeil as well. Conley would certainly still will be standing around as Clarkson guns away. Makes little sense to me to keep any of the older guys if Gobert is gone.

I'm actually surprised at how much other teams fanbases are underrating Rudy. He's definitely become a victim of a narrative that has been created to protect Donovan.

Like Bulls fans on The Athletic think he's not a big upgrade over Vuc. He's an A1 level defender, he's gotten this team to be #1 in the West last year, you put him on a Bulls team who actually have some decent perimeter defenders and they'd be huge in the East. Atlanta, Trae would be finding him on lobs all day long.

The black could actually work with a different color. The yellow is awful. Hopefully we don't see much of the black and yellow jerseys and they stick with the throwback and the white

The black actually looks OK in action, but the black and yellow are the types of jerseys that won't look that good when it's an average fan wearing them.

Sweden’s ex-NBA star Jonas Jerebko has quit CSKA Moscow, (https://www.thelocal.se/20220618/swedens-ex-nba-star-leaves-moscow-team/) the team said on Saturday, less than three months after his controversial decision to join the organisation amid international condemnation of Russia. The Swedish basketball federation cut Jerebko from the national squad at the end of March, a day after he joined CSKA Moscow, saying his decision was “against the federation’s values and our very clear stance towards Russia” over its invasion of Ukraine.

The Swedish federation said Jerebko would however not be returning to the national squad. (https://www.thelocal.se/20220618/swedens-ex-nba-star-leaves-moscow-team/) His decision to leave CSKA “doesn’t in any way change the decision we made when he signed with them”, the head of the federation Fredrik Joulamo told Swedish news agency TT.

Literally all it took was to replace the yellow with purple and it all probably would have looked fine. Read Smith wanted just black/white but got told no by the league and Nike because of the Spurs/Nets, so they just threw the yellow in to get it accepted. Then they started hearing everyone hated the look once it was leaked and dumped the purple back in to try and placate fans. Wouldn't have been hard to copy the note logo white jersey with a purple/white based one and then a black/white one. Not sure what the plain Utah/Jazz idea came from either.

Black court looks good though.

One coaching candidate sure to interest Danny Ainge as he launches a search for Quin Snyder’s replacement is Brad Stevens (https://marcstein.substack.com/p/nba-trade-draft-and-coaching-scuttle?s=r) … but it’s difficult in the extreme to see anyone luring Stevens back to coaching in the short term given how well Stevens’ team-building efforts are going in Boston as the Celtics’ rookie president of basketball operations.

Most, if not all of the 15 candidates (https://kslsports.com/487746/jazz-head-coaching-interview-tracker/) will get second interviews according to Charania as the search for the Jazz next head coach continues.

“Sources said the Jazz are scheduling second interview times with almost all of their 15 head coaching candidates as the next step in the process,” Charania wrote.

The Athletic’s report contradicts a report from Sportando writer Emiliana Carchia last Friday that indicated the Jazz had narrowed their search to four names.
“Alex Jensen, Adrian Griffin, Will Hardy and Johnnie Bryant are the final candidates for Jazz head coaching job, I am told,” Carchia tweeted.

https://saltcityhoops.com/new-version-mitchell-gobert/

The problem it turns out, wasn’t that Paul was too loud; it’s that he was right.

as Rudy is. It's insane that all the talk is about getting rid of him when Mitchell didn't even show up after the all-star break last year and their revered coach didn't make a playoff adjustment in 3 years!

Conley is still a valuable table-setter who impacts teammates positively (https://twitter.com/danclayt0n/status/1500907529399721985?s=20&t=Erkn-iV1eUSx6LB4qOGopQ), but identity-wise, the Jazz just wouldn’t be different enough with him, Mitchell and Gobert all returning in their current roles. The notion that Conley and Mitchell can’t produce winning results together because of their size is a myth (https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/team/29/lineups?on=4362&on=695#tab-four_factors), but it seems clear the Jazz are focused on shifting more ball-handling duties to the younger guard. So it makes sense to start with some scenarios where Conley is outgoing.

Be hard for Mitchell to handle the ball much more unless Clarkson is also going!

The most commonly rumored trade partner in a Conley swap is Washington, whose offer would likely be 3-and-D guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and one of their forwards. Kyle Kuzma, their second-leading scorer and minute-getter, is probably too rich a price for the Wiz, so it could come down to Rui Hachimura or Deni Avdija. I think they’ll more easily part with Hachimura, who I like better anyway, if the Jazz are trying to remain competitive. He’s a meaty four who hasn’t fully blossomed yet but who’s improving as a shooter.

an actual starting 4! Jazz must have a new coach?

Separately, Utah could dangle Clarkson to add another defensive wing. They were interested in Josh Richardson a few months ago, or this could be a buy-low moment for Matysse Thybulle, whose role dwindled over the course of the year. But my favorite target here would be P.J. Washington, whom the Hornets are evidently willing to move. Charlotte would have to include another small contract or two (or send them elsewhere).

Clarkson for anyone!!!

At that point the Jazz have given up enough shooting and creation that they should probably hold onto Bogdanovic in the short term. They’d also need to target a backup PG with the midlevel exception. I’d see if they could get Utah collegian Delon Wright for around TMLE money. He’s a solid shooter, defender and P&R creator. They’d also want a minimum-salary center (let’s say, eh, Damian Jones), although with the Hachimura-Washington combo they could feasibly play small at times, too. Re-sign Danuel House Jr. with non-Bird rights. If they can find a deal for Rudy Gay, see if Juancho Hernangomez wants to stick around at the minimum.

A vet center as insurance behind Udoka. Gay might be useful under a new coach? Juancho and House might not be?

Resulting depth chart:

Gobert-Jones-Dok

Washington-Hachimura-Paschall

Bogey-O’Neale-Hernangomez
KCP-House-NAW
Mitchell-Wright-Butler
(Assuming they could retain Eric Paschall for around $5 million or less, this version would actually get the Jazz just under the tax, too. They’d also still have the Ingles TPE intact, plus they’d create new TPEs for the different in salary on the Conley and Clarkson deals.)

Dok deserves a chance to be the backup if they think he can stay healthy. I'd start House or Royce and bring Bojan off the bench. I think Butler deserves a chance to play as well. Why bring back Juancho to play the 3? Paschall is more of a 3

How realistic is this? The Washington deal is in the realm of what’s being discussed. Clarkson-for-Washington is a bit reachier, but there’s not a ton of intel out there about what Charlotte wants for PJ. Wright is a former Ute who knows Salt Lake.

Wahington has been in Gobert trades. Charlotte had a great offense. Horrible D. Clarkson isn't the answer.

Four months ago, Sacramento was hoping to be competitive enough to make the play-in, so they were passing up offers like Clarkson and a pick (plus filler) for Harrison Barnes. But then they went 9-16 after the trade deadline and missed the play-in. Maybe they’d be more likely to listen now, particularly if Utah upgraded its offer to include, for example, O’Neale or a sweetener like Jared Butler. It’s a longer shot than the above, but would give Utah another bona fide scorer — one with a big body and championship experience.

they had a historically great offense. Need a coach that can make adjustments in the playoffs when things don't go as you planned them in the regular season

Competitive impact: This one all comes down to whether you think Collins can be a third star. And there’s a good chance he can. He’s an efficient scorer and he even grades out as above-average defensively (https://dunksandthrees.com/epm). Fournier, Harris and Wright would be size upgrades at their respective positions, but might be less good overall than the guys they’d replace.

Didn't think Collins was considered a good defender. To me you keep Gobert and Mitchell if you think they can get along. Get a starting 4. A vet 5 as insurance for Dok. Get rid of Clarkson and Conley. Move Bojan to Clarkson's role. Fill in the rest

But suggesting that the Jazz have to break up their All-Star duo to come back different enough is just plain inaccurate. As shown here, there are multiple ways the Jazz could retool around those two and bring back a roster that is bigger, younger, better, or all three. These scenarios offer three specific examples, but that’s just a start, really. There are myriad other ways they could use their TMLE, their trade exception, and the market interest in their complementary pieces. We didn’t even explore Cleveland as a Conley trade partner, and there are other teams asking around about Bogdanovic, Clarkson and O’Neale. Heaven knows they’ll look different (https://saltcityhoops.com/jazz-jersey-release-a-perfect-metaphor-for-a-team-without-identity/), they have exceptions to fill out minor roles, and a new coach will inject some freshness. Keeping Mitchell and Gobert doesn’t have to mean “running it back.”

even got them out of the tax in at least one!

Yet I must note that I was strongly advised after that Spotify chat that the Bulls have ongoing reservations about pursuing a Gobert deal and that Toronto remains a team to watch if the Jazz indeed trade away the league’s foremost interior defensive anchor. https://www.ksl.com/article/50427429/ryan-smith-says-theres-an-argument-the-jazz-went-too-clean-in-rebrand

The purple, black and yellow combo will serve as that; and according to Smith, there's been some promising data that shows fans may like it more than the online vitriol suggests.

it's awful. Wade and Smith need to leave these kind of decisions to someone else obviously

"There's probably a fair argument that we went a little too clean," Smith said. "OK, but it will evolve and it will go."

The yellow will never look good

"We want purple to be a massive part of our color scheme going forward. We have not had purple as part of our color scheme in 20 years. Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams never wore purple," he said. "We brought it back twice on annual throwbacks, but that's who we are when you talk to opposing players that played us back in the day. They associate purple with the Jazz, and it's a little tricky because there's two other purple teams out there in Sacramento (Kings) and LA (Lakers), but we want that to be a big part of our brand going forward. So we'll get it right."

there's not other teams wearing black, yellow and white? Probably less teams with purple

But he admitted he hasn't been that involved in the process with CEO Danny Ainge and general manager Justin Zanik.

good! The fact that you think COTM was the guy and that you can build around Mitchell tells me you need to let Danny do the heavy lifting

"I believe that you hire the best and you empower them, and I don't think there's a better basketball brain than Danny; he's definitely on the Mount Rushmore of NBA executives," Smith said. "The way he and Justin are doing this process, I will come in at the end and see the recommendations, see what they want to do and have long discussions and interviews and meet the candidates at the end. But outside of that, I won't advise them."

since you know it's Bryant already why waste your time!

This, though, will be Ainge's first draft leading the Jazz front office. Ainge was the main architect in the Celtics' run to the NBA Finals this season, having drafted key contributors Marcus Smart, Jayson Tatum, Jalen Brown, Robert Williams, Grant Williams and Payton Pritchard.

and yet he was on board with keeping a coach that hasn't made an adjustment the past 3 playoffs!

Would You Miss Rudy Gobert If He Were Traded?

sadly most people wouldn't despite the fact that he has carried the franchise for the past 7 plus years. :facepalm

With all this noise of Gobert being linked to multiple teams and the Jazz listening, it does show that Danny Ainge and the Jazz higher-ups want to build around Mitchell and his offensive game.

sounds like Smith does anyway

“I don’t know if I’m an insane person for saying I don’t know if I would miss Rudy Gobert if I saw him in another jersey,” he said. “I know what the feelings were when you see some guys who left here, I didn’t miss Gordon Hayward when he left.”

“I checked in last night and this morning and I think Danny and Justin are doing a great job,” Smith added. “Danny set (the timeline) up in the press conference. I mean, that wasn’t my timeline. He was pretty direct on what that timeline would be. And that’s what he’s here — he’s here to lead and it’s my job to empower him.”

It does sound like Danny is in charge not Zanik. Danny is doing the same thing as in Boston. He just doesn't have to talk to the media now because Zanik is GM

“I think Justin told me that it was about six weeks in the process of hiring Quin,” Ainge said. “I think we’re in a similar boat.”

Not ideal with the draft, free agency and summer league coming. You'd love to have a system to play at summer league! The fact that they let COTM put them in this situation is a joke

“I’ve been in the draft room twice and both times they’ve asked to acquire a pick, so absolutely,” Smith said. “Everyone wants to be able to try to figure out if there’s a young talent, especially with Danny’s track record. I mean, I’d love to get as many picks as possible. But, it’s a marketplace, so it has to be right.”

Kind of depends on what direction the team is headed. Retooling or tanking?

Following his Sixth Man of the Year 2020-21 campaign, Jordan Clarkson (https://www.deseret.com/2021/5/25/22452925/utah-jazz-jordan-clarkson-accepted-role-becoming-the-sixth-man-of-the-year-nba-playoffs-memphis) had some small dips in his efficiency throughout the regular season but he largely remained consistent and was still one of the most reliable bench players in the league.

consistent and reliable? He was awful most of the season so I guess that is consistent. Even when he's good it's hard to watch. Hard to imagine a new coach letting him play that way

Most importantly, Clarkson was one of the Jazz’s most consistent and reliable players during the playoffs. Of the Jazz’s regular rotation players he was the leading 3-point scorer for the team in the postseason and the third-leading scorer overall behind Mitchell and Bogdanovic.

who cares! They barely made the playoffs and his awful play was one of the biggest reasons

If you go out and get a player and everyone tells you exactly what type of player you are getting and then that player is exactly what everyone said he would be, then you can’t really be mad about it.

You can. There's a reason the Jazz stayed away from guys like Whiteside for decades

It was clear that Gay was losing his spot in the rotation as Hernangomez started getting his minutes as the season went on and Gay ended up not playing a single minute for the Jazz in playoffs.

Gay actually played his best ball in his final games. I think they still could have used him and Juan

What was supposed to be the Jazz’s big free-agent acquisition, turned out to be a move that didn’t do much of anything. It wasn’t that Gay was bad — he shot the ball well and had some good moments — it was just that there were other players who were younger and better and more skilled.

he was bad most of the time

While the other areas of his game improved, Forrest shot the ball less and at a lower percentage than he did last season.

It looked like he worked on it. He's just got to be confident enough to let it fly. Would be huge if he could hit open shots at a respectable rate

Paschall is not the most skilled Jazz player and he wasn’t always perfect, but he continued to improve despite being put in a hard position as far as the rotation was concerned.

I think end of the bench energy guy is what he is

Butler remains an incredibly interesting prospect who has a ton of upside on both sides of the floor and if the Jazz end up parting ways with Conley and Forrest (or one or the other, or both) Butler could be in a position to have a much larger role in the 2022-23 season.

I'd be looking at him as the backup pg this year unless Forrest develops a shot than he could still come off the bench at the 2

Azubuike isn’t a star player and he might not even end up being on this roster or any other, but he answered the call this season for the Jazz when they needed him.

He'll be on a roster if he can stay healthy. Still very young. Elite length and vertical. Good size

There’s a lot of upside for Alexander-Walker, but he played less than any other player on the Jazz’s roster that was not a two-way player, so we aren’t going to fail him, but we also can’t necessarily grade him.

You could since he actually started some games. I think he should be given a shot at making the rotation if he's still around come camp. Needs to improve his shot as well

The only player to play fewer minutes than Alexander-Walker was two-way player Xavier Sneed (https://www.deseret.com/2022/2/16/22937691/utah-jazz-reportedly-are-adding-another-player-on-a-two-way-contract-xavier-sneed).

The Jazz are largely going to be defined based on how good Donovan Mitchell (https://www.deseret.com/2022/5/24/23139609/will-donovan-mitchell-demand-a-trade-from-the-utah-jazz-this-summer-bleacher-report-atlanta-hawks) is and they have been since his rookie season.

more like how bad he is. The post all-star collapse was inexcusable!

When Mitchell burst onto the NBA scene as an electric rookie, the Jazz made the playoffs and surprised many with how good they were. As the years have passed, Mitchell has played at an All-Star level and has been pretty consistent in how he plays. While there have been improvements and tweaks to his game, he hasn’t revved up his game to be considered a top-tier player. Though he’s had some really amazing performances, he hasn’t pushed through to that place where he would be considered one of the best players in the league.

Consistent? After January maybe except for this year of course! He hasn't pushed through to be the best player on his team and I doubt he ever will be unless Gobert is gone or not until Rudy starts to decline

If you’re just looking at stats alone, Mitchell seemed to regress a little offensively in the 2021-22 season. Compared to the previous season, Mitchell was a better finisher, improving his two-point shooting percentage, and he was a hair better from the free-throw line, but that’s where the improvement stopped. He scored fewer points, turned the ball over more, wasn’t as effective at rebounding the ball and his 3-point shooting percentage slipped.

He was better than ever before the break and worse than ever after for whatever reason. That is the only thing that anyone should be talking about. Very worrisome!

There’s an argument to be made that Mitchell has been asked to do more with less. It’s fair to wonder what Mitchell would be able to accomplish with the right supporting cast, but it’s also fair to criticize him for not adapting to his current situation and making the most of it.

He's next to one of the best players in the game. Time to step up or shut the **** the up!

There are many people who are angry about the fact Rudy Gobert (https://www.deseret.com/2022/6/14/23167548/why-a-rudy-gobert-trade-to-the-chicago-bulls-may-not-happen-patrick-williams-atlanta-hawks) has not developed more of an offensive arsenal than purely finishing at the rim. Why doesn’t he work on a little hook shot, a floater or anything other than a dunk? The truth is, for whatever reason, Gobert is not that player and it’s not what has been expected from him internally. Gobert is not a back-to-the-basket center and the offense is not going to run through him.

I think a lot of that is on COTM. Those are inefficient shots. He wanted dunks or kickouts period!

That said, it’s certainly not easy watching a player with the size and skill of Gobert unable to punish smaller players despite his 7-foot-9 wingspan, which has happened time and time again, including against the Dallas Mavericks in the playoffs.

Again a lot of that is on the coach and teammates. France got him the ball and he punished the USA.

The bottom line is that Gobert’s faults are often not his fault, but they do keep the Jazz tied to a certain type of basketball without a lot of wiggle room.

There's tons of wiggle room. He's very versatile defensively. There's a lot he can do on the offensive side as well. Putting the right players around and having the right coach matters. It's a team sport

The Jazz’s backcourt duo of Mitchell and Conley is just too small for the teams that are being fielded. It’s obviously not Conley’s fault that he’s on the smaller size for a guard, but the Jazz are at a point where they need to get longer and more rangy on the wings.

If Mitchell played bigger like he should with his size and length it would be less of an issue

Add the roster needs to the fact that Conley was a smidge less efficient, it all seems to lead to the Jazz needing to put the ball in Mitchell’s hands full time and move on from Conley.

the ball has been in Mitchell and Clarkson's hands. That was a big part of the problem. The offense looked a lot better with Conley running the show but he was usually spotting up which was a waste of his talents really

It had become sort of a trend for the Jazz to look for a way to make an adjustment and to turn to Bojan Bogdanovic (https://www.deseret.com/2022/3/6/22963852/instant-analysis-bojan-bogdanovic-breaks-franchise-record-as-jazz-beat-thunder). His role changed probably more than any other player on the roster from one season to the next and from one playoff series to the next, and each time he adapted with ease and excelled.

Gobert

Bogdanovic again took on more defensive responsibilities during the playoffs for the Jazz and rose to the occasion. But, as he was expending his energy guarding Luka Doncic, his shooting suffered. That’s not really something to dock Bogdanovic’s grade for. If anything, it’s a testament to his willingness to take on challenges and an admonishment of the front office for not having more players in place to take on the defensive assignments that were eventually handed to Bogdanovic.

it's why you bring him off the bench to do the one thing he is good at score

But, there is absolutely no denying that O’Neale still has room to grow and there is no debating that at times this season, O’Neale did not look like the defender that he has been in years past. Part of the blame should again be laid at the feet of the front office. O’Neale is a good defender on certain types of players, but because of the lack of defensive versatility on the roster, it meant that O’Neale had to guard smaller players that he is not great at staying in front of.

Bigger problem was that he's been asked to be their starting 4 and pound the glass while also being their defensive stopper on the perimeter. Asked too much from him. He's a wing. 3 and D. Hustle.

this will be very telling as to what the doctors think of his ankle. It's a no brainer to pick it up if they think he can stay on the floor but after 3 injuries in a year to the same ankle they have be weighing this one

After finishing two seasons with the Jazz, Udoka Azubuike has not developed into quite the player that the Jazz would have wanted. However, with that being said, he is a reasonably solid backup to the Stifle Tower, Rudy Gobert. As such, he is a developing player who could do greater things under a different coach.

I'd say they'd have to feel pretty good about the way he played when he was starting.

5 roster moves the Utah Jazz need to make this offseason: 2. Re-sign Hassan Whiteside

No! Udoka should get a shot at being the backup as long as they think he can stay healthy. Otherwise get rid of him. Sign a solid vet as insurance

5 roster moves the Utah Jazz need to make this offseason: 3. Bring back Joe Ingles

Tanking or retooling? Would be a minimum deal.

In return, they received Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who the Jazz need to pick up his team option for this season. They also received Juancho Hernangomez as part of the deal. While neither of these players made much of an impression, if they can keep Alexander-Walker and re-sign Ingles, then that would be perfect.

could argue Juancho was better. They certainly seemed to miss Ingles but he wasn't very good last year after his best season

5 roster moves the Utah Jazz need to make this offseason: 4. Guarantee Juan Hernangomez

Retooling or tanking. His contract is valuable right now

The problem with this is that the Jazz have more than half of their salary cap tied up in two players. While Gobert and Mitchell are two of the best in the NBA, they are not enough to take the team to the next level, which is where they need to go.

Imagine if someone had said that about Stockton and Malone in '93 or so! Let's see what they can do with a coach that will make adjustments come playoff time

If the Jazz can convert Gobert’s massive deal into two or three players, this then gives them the ability to start moving for pieces that will move them even further forward. This is the biggest issue with the supermax – teams offer their players so much of the salary cap that they lose any and all flexibility.

He got less than the full super max. Never asked for the full amount. Again the problem are the guys and coach around him. Gobert has been one of the most impactful players in the league and isn't even getting the full max! He's a bargain. Your other max guy and former coach needed to step up

It works. He's been hurt a lot but can still play. Would love with the way he still gets booed!

Los Angeles Clippers forward Nicolas Batum is declining his $3.3 million player option to hit free agency, but it is widely expected that he will re-sign a new two-year deal, league sources told Yahoo Sports. It is anticipated that the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz will have strong interest in trying to pry away the 14-year veteran from Clipper Land, sources said (https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-nicolas-batum-to-decline-player-option-with-clippers-with-lakers-celtics-among-interested-teams-164111319.html). But the Clippers are in the driver’s seat, sources said.

Jazz are interested if they don't trade their best player

How is the search for Quin Snyder’s replacement progressing? Ryan Smith: “I checked in [Monday] night and [Tuesday] morning, and I think Danny and Justin [Zanik] are doing a great job. I trust them and we trust them with 100% confidence. … The good news is, there’s a lot of phenomenal coaches in the NBA (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2022/06/22/utah-jazz-owner-ryan/). “… Danny set [the timeline] up in the press conference. That was not my timeline — he was pretty direct on what that timeline would be. That’s what he’s here for — he’s here to lead, and my job is to empower him. … I’m really not [involved with early interviews], to be honest with you. I believe that you hire the best and you empower ’em. I don’t think there’s a better basketball brain than Danny, he’s definitely on the Mount Rushmore of NBA executives.”

Other veteran ball-handlers said to be available for trade, in addition to the aforementioned Murray and Russell, are Utah Jazz point guard Mike Conley, (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10039635-latest-nba-offseason-rumors-san-antonio-spurs-discussing-dejounte-murray-trades) Charlotte’s Terry Rozier, Pelicans point guard Devonte’ Graham, along with Nuggets table-setter Monte Morris.

Utah is searching for a first-round pick to move any non-Donovan Mitchell or Rudy Gobert rotation player. Royce O’Neale has registered a bevy of trade interest from around the league (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10039635-latest-nba-offseason-rumors-san-antonio-spurs-discussing-dejounte-murray-trades).

Can't believe he gets you a first. I'd be looking at moving Clarkson and Conley. Need a starting PF. Maybe a shooting guard? Or a pg with size. Just saw Murray might be available!

The rising expectation in coaching circles is that Utah, with Danny Ainge entrenched as the club’s new CEO, wants to hire a young first-time coach to replace Quin Snyder (https://marcstein.substack.com/p/drafttradefree-agentcoach-buzz).

Now, what about Utah? The Hawks have been rumored to have interest in Jazz center Rudy Gobert for quite some time, and getting an elite big back for Collins would make sense in terms of roster construction. Except for one thing: Sources significantly downplayed the idea that Atlanta wants Gobert and said this scenario has been wildly overblown. (https://theathletic.com/live-blogs/nba-draft-2022/vwppvqcjn6UR/) For starters, the Hawks still think very highly of center Clint Capela and franchise centerpiece Trae Young is known to be quite close with him as well. With that in mind, take a quick peek at the respective contracts of the two big men and you’ll better understand why the Hawks are not pursuing Utah’s three-time Defensive Player of the Year and three-time All-Star.

29th in D would tell you that they'd be stupid not to want one of the best players in the league

It’s not a secret that the Jazz need to get better on the court. And there’s been plenty of talk around Rudy Gobert, Utah’s all-star center, with multiple teams remaining viable options, according to sources. The Jazz are certainly open to trading Gobert. (https://theathletic.com/3379521/2022/06/23/utah-jazz-draft-rudy-gobert/?source=nbatw) But, they aren’t going to give him away. Gobert’s value to Utah is immense. It might dwarf his value on the open market. For those reasons, a trade package centered around Gobert is certainly possible, even as soon as Thursday. But it isn’t guaranteed. Utah has held conversations concerning finding a way into Thursday night’s draft, multiple league sources tell The Athletic. Whether something materializes from there, also remains to play out. But the Jazz are trying, and they are dangling many of the players in their core in order to conceivably find a match.

Get better on the court by trading the guy that has carried the franchise for 7 plus years! :lol

Utah currently has no picks. But even if the Jazz don’t find a way to get into the first round, sources say they are open to trying to find their way into the second round. Sources also indicate the Jazz have a lengthy list of players compiled from workouts and interviews at the NBA’s Draft Combine (https://theathletic.com/3379521/2022/06/23/utah-jazz-draft-rudy-gobert/?source=nbatw) that they are prepared to offer Exhibit 10 deals to by the end of the draft, in order to entice undrafted free agents. That will also make their Summer League roster more important than usual. Utah actually has projected spots that guys can possibly play their way into.

– via Tony Jones @ The Athletic (https://theathletic.com/3379521/2022/06/23/utah-jazz-draft-rudy-gobert/?source=nbatw)

Utah’s variance for a draft night where it enters with zero picks is as wide as can be. There is a chance that the Jazz make multiple trades by the end of the draft, and that the roster looks significantly different than it looked when the day started. There is a chance that Utah’s roster looks much the same as it did when the day started, and the only real significant change will be who’s coaching the team. The latter is probably less likely than the former, sources say (https://theathletic.com/3379521/2022/06/23/utah-jazz-draft-rudy-gobert/?source=nbatw).

Only way I see this summer league team being more important is if they trade Rudy and are tanking. They probably won't even have a coach or system yet for summer league. COTM left them a shitshow. There's always spots you can play into. There was no spot for Royce. Could be tons of spots if they are tanking

Danny watched him kill his alma mater in the NCAA tourney last year!

Only 21. 6'6" wing. Looks like he may have done worse this year except his 3 point shooting which will have to improve
