Would you agree? Years ago, I actually made a thread about the 80's having underwhelming films in general if you compare that decade to the 70's & 90's.

Nah, 70's had greater films than the 80's.
The Godfather
The Godfather Part II
All the President's Men
Dog Day Afternoon
The Deer Hunter
Taxi Driver
Star Wars
Dirty Harry
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The French Connection
Annie Hall
Chinatown
Jaws
Apocalypse Now
A Clockwork Orange
etc.
The 70's are often looked at as the golden age for films for many people, the 80's don't compare.

Alot of those films you listed are good, but not great films. You can make a long list for good films for every decade.
The Godfather
The Godfather Part II
Taxi Driver
Apocalypse Now
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
These are all time great films, you can make an argument for top 50 ever. The 80's don't really have that many "great" films compared to the 70's or 90's.
There are also a handful of very good 70's films I left out like Rocky, Network and Alien

Funny enough, 1980 was actually one of the best years ever for film. Raging Bull, The Shining, The Elephant Man etc.
The rest of the decade was underwhelming though.

First off, which decades are even eligible for this discussion? Feature length films have been around since the 1910's, so is basically every decade of the 20th century eligible?
If so, every decade before the 60's would automatically be in the worst decades discussion for me, and the vast majority of those movies have been seen by so few living people it seems kind of ridiculous to even include them.
The 90's are far and away the GOAT decade for movies to me, 2000's would be 2nd, and it'd honestly be pretty close between the 2010's & 1980's for 3rd. The 60's & 70's for sure had many great films, but I feel like a good amount of them simply don't hold up after so many years.

I donno.. a lot of 80's movies are my absolute favorites.
I don't dig Star Wars that much like I used to but Episode 5/6 are definitely top 50 of all time. As is Scarface, no explanation needed. As is Police Academy which is IMO maybe the GOAT comedy. As is Rambo Trilogy which is maybe my favorite action movie series. And from the 70's I wouldn't have Taxi Driver and Apocalypse Now in the top 50. Those are good movies but not that great. Just IMO.
Agree that 90's are the GOAT decade for movies. Forget top 50. Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, Shawshank Redemption. Terminator 2 and Titanic are all arguably top 10 movies ever.

You crazy, Apocalypse Now is often regarded as the GOAT war movie. Has way more depth than most popular war movies. Taxi Driver was revolutionary in terms of character study, no film prior achieved what Taxi Driver did.
90's & 70's to me are the GOAT decades for movies.

By the way a lot of movie critics including Rotten Tomatoes rank the original Terminator (1984) as the greatest sci-fi movie of all time. I personally think Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) is the best movie in the series but a lot of people including the critics disagree.
You're way overrating the 70's bud. Seriously.. Godfather is an absolute classic and others you listed are just good movies. There's probably more but you didn't list them.

Gone with the Wind
The Wizard of Oz
King Kong
Robin Hood (the original)
Frankenstein
Pygmalion
Les Miserables
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

You're underrating the 70's. That was an era where Pacino, DeNiro, & Jack Nicholson hit their prime. Brando was still making great movies as an older actor. Scorsese & Francis Ford Coppola rose and made some great movies.
I guess it's a matter of preference, 80's had better comedies & sci-fi films, but the very best movies are always in the "drama" category, that's where you get the best story telling and performances from actors and the 70's blow the 80's away in that category. It's no coincidence great actors like Pacino, DeNiro, & Nicholson made more great movies in the 70's than they did in the 80's.
I thought Tarantino nailed it in the vid I posted, in the 80's films became more corporate & less artistic. But I made a thread about 80's movies being overrated on this site years ago and got some push back, so I expect people to disagree with me.

Honestly it’s hard for me to watch movies outside of the 1980 - 2010 time frame. There are exceptions before and after but that 30 year span of movies are really the only ones that can keep my attention.

Drama is one category of movie. Yes those are usually what people consider "masterpieces" but movies are also about entertainment. That fact that the 80's has awesome sci-fi, action and comedy films, much better than the 70's, pretty much destroys the argument in the OP.
For instance would you really say Godfather is a better movie than The Terminator? I wouldn't even compare them to be honest. Different genres and both are at the absolute apex.

Of course The Godfather is better than The Terminator, it's a better movie. Who cares if they are different genres.
I've always felt movies & music should be more about art rather than entertainment, entertaining movies/songs will eventually be forgotten by history, great movies with substance that get Oscar nods will always be remembered.
I mean shit, look at the best movies year by year from the 70's & 80's & compare.
1970: Patton
1971: The French Connection/A Clockwork Orange
1972: The Godfather
1973: The Sting
1974: The Godfather Part II
1975: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
1976: Taxi Driver
1977: Annie Hall/Star Wars
1978: The Deer Hunter
1979: Apocalypse Now
1980: Raging Bull
1981: Chariots of Fire/Raiders of the Lost Ark
1982: Gandhi
1983: Scarface
1984: Amadeus
1985: Out of Africa/The Color Purple
1986: Platoon
1987: The Last Emperor
1988: Rain Man

Acting? Arnold was unbelievable in playing the cyborg. I don't think they could have found a better actor. Linda Hamilton playing Sarah Connor and whoever was the actor playing Kyle Reese were also superb. Even actors playing with minor roles like the police chief and Dr. Silverman were fantastic.
Directing? Terminator has perhaps unsurpassed directing. James freaking Cameron are you serious?
Musical score? The theme music of Terminator is one of the most recognizable of any movie ever.
Cinematography? Again top notch...
Artistry? Hmm... the concept model of the Terminator under the skin, the futuristic machines in Reese's stories and all the other sci-fi elements were amazing.
Impact? Seriously... I don't think I need to say anything here.
RottenTomatoes gave Terminator a 100% Score. Imagine thinking Terminator is not a legendary movie. You have to live under a rock or something...
Again different genres. You can compare Godfather to Scarface or Goodfellas. Comparing movies from different genres is dumb. It's like comparing Lebron and Ronaldo.

You know what, i love Terminator as it's one of the best sci-fi movies of all time and you're making me regret it by putting it in it's place compared to Godfather
Overall, i'd pick James Cameron over Francis Coppola. Dude knew how to risk everything just to give his best. Coppola just have the better "peak". He made Godfather 1 & 2, The Conversation and Apocalypse Now, which is probably 4 of 5 best movies of that decade
Seriously, you tell me how The Terminator theme/score is more iconic or recognizable than the Godfather?

Why is Terminator and Godfather even being compared, asides from both being moves? It's like asking which is better, Empire Strikes Back or The Green Mile? Completely different genres that accomplish very different things about as well as you can for the type of movies they are and when they were made. Seems like a pointless argument there? I will say, the Terminator series has lost its luster because they keep going to the well when narratively, it perfectly wrapped up with Judgement day. T1 and T2 are legit classics for the genre and in general, as are GF1 and 2.

Overall the 80s was a MUCH better decade for films than the 2010s, and IMO the 80s were probably better than the 90s too... especially if you consider that several of the GOAT 90s movies came out at the start (Goodfellas - 1990) or end (Matrix, Fight Club - 1999) of that decade.

The 70’s had the best OST’s, but crappy acting/FX.
The 80’s was the Action blockbuster decade. All real explosions, no CGI, but had really cheesy OST’s that aged poorly, largely due to polyphonic synthesizers being so ubiquitous, and lots of big budget films saving hella guap not hiring symphony orchestras to make the OST.
The 90’s was the Mob movie decade.
80’s was kinda light on the type of films Tarantino “respects”, but there’s no Denying the greatness of some of the 80’s action/SciFi films:
Predator
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
Ghostbusters
The Goonies
Terminator
Rambo 1, 2, 3
Aliens
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon

I love James Bond movies but the '80s Bond movies were pretty forgettable. My favorite ones were all the classic ones from way earlier, or the recent Daniel Craig ones

everyone hates on every era where their favorite movies weren't made
tarantino has made some of the most overrated movies of all-time so no need to take his words as gospel
You know who else makes some turkeys? Scorsese. His track record runs about 1 out of 4 being worthwhile.

I can see where Tarantino is coming from I wouldn't have the 80's at the bottom of the list but they were a dip between the 1990's and 1970's. The difficult thing with decades is you have some decades that are incredible for half of it (1960-63) but then the rest of the decade kinda sucks.
1. 1950's
2. 1990's
3. 1930's
4. 1970's
5. 1960's
6. 1980's
7. 2000's
8. 2020's
9. 1940's
10. 2010's
11. 1920's
12. 1910's

What have the 2020s done to not be dead last? From 1930-onwards anyway?

I hate it. Deniro’s character is a cuck, Stone being Stone, slow.

They aren't the 2010's....
A24 has pretty much elevated the mid-budget film that was dead for most of the 10's. You've also had big strides in foreign markets where the technology has caught up with the cost still low. And finally you've seen at least one huge hit each year that can cover most of the audience from Top Gun Maverick to Encanto to Barbie to Oppenheimer to The Batman to Everything Everywhere all at Once.
Also as a fan of horror the last three years have been incredible. I wouldn't rank it the 00's or 80's as those decades had so many hits but this has been a solid decade.

The 2020s is gonna be a weird decade to rank because it seems like alot of the good stuff won't hit pop culture in any significant way. Not that it needs to in order for a film to be considered good, just that every decade has its standout films that define it and people instantly remember. I don't know what those movies are going to be for the 2020s yet and how they compare to past classics, so we'll have to see what happens when it's all over. In general, the 2020s is going to be really interesting in hindsight. Covid really tipped the scales and we've been adapting ever since in most/all phases of life.
The 80’s had a lot of cult classics. Good luck trying to convince someone (that lived in this era) Goonies wasn’t better or has more replay value than Apocolypse Now.

Pretty much. Terminator, Empire Strikes Back, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones...stuff like that we knew was cool watching then but we've had 40 years for those IPs to be submerged in pop culture. It takes time for things to be considered 'classics' as far as having enduring popularity and resonance.
Big (Tom hanks), Stand by me, Karate kid, Big trouble in little China, Ferris Bueller, Little Shop of Horrors, Highlander, Weird Science, Spaceballs, Labrinth, Neverending Story, Blues brothers.
Damn the 80’s had them cults on lock. Maybe the goat era for cult classics?

If I were to go down the list of all my favorite movies... very few of them would be from the 80s
But as y'all already pointed out... The 80s has all the classics... and it has the greatest Vampire Movie of all time.

The 80's had incredible genre films but the adult drama field was fairly terrible. Raging Bull came out in 1980 and Do the Right Thing came out in 1989 but it was rough in between that time frame.
