View Full Version : Ayton is so soft.

He should have dominated the undersized Mavs on the Glass and in the paint this series.

I seriously can not believe that he was scared to go at it against Powell and Kleber.

And that Monty Williams basically called him out in the post-game for playing soft all series long.

It's so weird because it always looked like he was scoring without much trouble when he tried to do so.

He is skilled but plays low motor. If you could put Russell westbrooks motor in Ayton he'd be a machine. (but at same time don't include the tard-ness)

He should have demanded the ball more.

As The Mavs with their weak frontcourt basically had no answer for him when he got aggressive offensively.

He pulled a KAT

Yup. He’s a nice guy.

Which is cool, but... not in the playoffs obviously.

You also have to consider the fact that he didn't get the max extension last offseason and he's essentially been stewing about it all year long.

It may explain why he refused to go back in the game and only played 17 minutes tonight.

And why Monty was so angry with him.

Deandre Ayton is not speaking to the media tonight.

After having an altercation with head coach and COTY Monty Williams, Deandre Ayton has declined to speak to the media tonight.

The rumours (unconfirmed) are that he refused to re-enter the game after Monty tried to sub him back in since the Suns were down 40+.

To be honest, if I was Ayton I'm not checking in either if I'm a big man who's lined up for a potentially 200 million dollar contract down 40 points.

They want him to risk himself, while not willing to take on the risk of giving him his money.

they don't run a lot of plays for ayton. interior defense has been a mavs weakness all season. ask the coy.

Monty has never liked him. He was chewing him out in the finals last season i remember. Monty just hates bigs in general i think. Refused to ever double giannis

If I were ayton I would go to another team that offers high usage. What's the point of getting my usage cut for 2nd round exit 40 point blowouts

then they should have put crowder at center and benched ayton. if you're not going to post him up and take advantage of the mismatch then play small and defend dal's 3pt barrage better. i'm not the coy though so i could be wrong.

Maxi is a good defender. I don't know why people are surprised when guys struggle to score on him. Powell isn't all that great but he does have a high motor so he still makes you work for everything.

Word, Maxi can defend 5’s
People sleep on this.

Probably because the only way “good paint defender” registers in many fan’s minds, is when a dude swats a shot out of bounds and yells while banging his chest.

Ayton is NOT a dominant type big like Embiid/Jokic who can just get his own shot. He needs to be fed and CP3 did NOTHING tonight to get anyone going. CP3 reduced himself to a roll player. And defensively, he's NOT an athletic big who is going to alter a lot of shots.

I mean I get he should've been more aggressive but his PG did nothing to get him going. He really needed to be fed in the P&P, where he's got a deadly midrange. Also, he's their 3rd best player. Most blame falls on CP3/Booker.

Also, let’s not forget, Ayton maybe feels funny playing against Luka, cause he was the first pick, and Luka was the 3rd.

dal vs c's was a fantasy target most of the season. they did get better during the season though. early on they were putrid.

Ayton plays so soft for his size and ability the low motor takes plays off doesn't play hard enough at times.

First thing James Jones should be doing this off season is trying, if possible, to get a Ayton sign and trade for Gobert.

I think it had more to do with Chris Paul losing his ability to play basketball in the 2nd half of this series. Ayton is a big, you need to get him the ball in his spots. It's not like they shut him down, he didn't get the ball early in the game and then he had a horrible 2nd quarter with the offensive fouls and him picking up 3 total in a quick succession. He only played ~14 minutes in the 1st half with less than 4 minutes in the 2nd Q and the game was already over. He only got 1 shot in the 1st quarter and it's not like he was turning it over either. You can't blame him when CP3/Bridges/Booker/Crowder combine for 4/26 in the first half.

You have to give credit to the Mavs' defense as well. They saw that CP0 regressed to the mean and went back to his old choking habits & they took advantage of it.

I agree with this. He’s not gonna be Joker/Joel but he could do more if he was more assertive, tho he’s also a young guy on a team with two all-pros. Kind of a tough spot to be barkin at dudes to get him the ball more. On top of which it doesnt seem to be his nature anyway.

It definitely doesn’t seem to be his nature, and I feel like lots of veteran commentators calling him “Bahamian Beast” didn’t match, but maybe they were hoping if they keep calling him that, that Ayton will try to live up to the moniker.

Honestly, why should Ayton risk injury when they're down 40 already without a contract extension? Look how teams have treated Cousins when he was due a max contract pre-injury. I totally get it.

He’s not soft he’s just a finesse big man….
