View Full Version : Just how good was Stephon Marbury in his prime?

From 1998-1999 to 2004-2005, he averaged 21.7/3.2/8.3/1.3/0.1 on 53.2% TS and 47.3% eFG.
Had two all-star appearances over those seven years.
Over this period, his TS% was slightly above league average. We must consider that those years were some of the most defensive and physical in NBA history.
To those that watched him: How good was he? How does he compare to PGs over the last decade? What was his game like? Whose was similar?

Dude was a headcase but had serious talent. Pretty underrated floor general in terms of decision making and passing in particular.

His assists per game and assist to turnover rate look solid.

He got traded for Jason Kidd, that's how good he was. Whatever that means

He was a good player but didn't really live up to the hype. He had a ton of hype coming out of high school and as a freshman at GT. Never elite in the NBA.

Nets went from a 20 win team to a B2B east champs. No team ever overachieved or frankly even did good ever with Marbury on it. Him and Iverson chucked us out of the 2004 olympics together. They took the most shots on the team and shot like ass.
That's why its funny when I hear apologists say "they had no offensive help! That's why they struggled with efficiency"... mind you they still ball hogged and took the most shots even with peak Tim Duncan and a bunch of other NBA All Stars on the team.

Deron Williams level, who was overweight and looked better than CP3 at times.

Yeah, Marbury was a good study in how important intangibles and leadership are. Theres nothing someone like Kidd could do physically that Marbury couldnt. He just didnt have it between the ears.

Marbury made 150 mil in 15 seasons, Kidd made 187.7 mil in 21 seasons.

Cool. but what's that have to do with how good he was?

Nothing. That's his gimmick, to post random nonsense over and over and over.

Kidd was bigger than Marbury and much more defensively capable. Now I guess you can say that's a somewhat mental thing... Kidd has the best defensive motor for a PG probably all time. He wanted to try more at the hustle plays and shutdown opportunities and rebounding and passing while Marbury was all about his own personal offensive aesthetics like he was trying to show out at Rucker park while playing nba and Olympic games. Ultimately it does boil down to a massive discrepancy in high level winning basketball intangibles.

so you're saying Kidd had the tools to perhaps rival Allen Iverson, but he chose to play more like Smart instead.

Kidd didn't have Marbury or iversons dribbling or breakdown iso skill. So yes... Kidd was basically marcus smart but taller, bigger, and faster with better rebounding and passing capability. A super deluxe rich mans version of Marcus smart.

not sure if that works under the modern pace though. essentially your description of his lack of iso skills turns him into Gobert and co.

Mitchell with a worse shot but better playmaking instincts. Mitchell if modern ball didn’t have him in love with the 3….but more of a natural playmaker.
I kinda lump him in with Kenny Anderson. But whatever, he dominated the Chinese and I especially like what he did with his shoes.

I remember I hated his game, Vince Carter's, Allen Iverson's and Tracy McGrady's.
I was a fan of Manu and Billups.
And it turns out I was right. All those guys accomplished is some stats bloated by their usage and shot attmpts.

the relationship between players and owners have generally not been pretty.

Marbury had a high ceiling, but never came close to meeting it.
It also helped Marbury was from Coney Island and had all the hyperbole hype of the NYC market and media behind his hype.
Plus, every owner in the Iverson era, wanted their own version of Iverson, cause they thought it would sell merchandise and premium ticket prices like Iverson did.
So from relatively successful players like:
Marbury
Francis
To complete bust #1 picks like:
Dejuan Wagner
It was the era of low efficiency, selfish, volume shooting scoring PG’s
A really crappy era.
Iverson was the only undersized scoring guard from that era that was worth sh1t

Playing with Duncan and Parker coached by Pop or on a team that started 4 all stars doesn’t make you right. I suspect if Duncan is allowed to take his wife on planes(which reportedly is why he backed out of the deal to go to Orlando) Tmac accomplishes quite a bit more. And I’m sure VC would have loved spending his prime on a team that could win a conference finals when he shot 30% overall and 26% from 3.
Doesnt work that way for everyone.

it's like BPM. when one starts questioning ones self worth, it all has to balance out.
