View Full Version : Ifyou could modify the result of a single NBA finals in history which one would it be

For me personally, I would choose 2015.
As had Lebron won those finals against a 67 win team with Delly as his second-best player.
That would be seen as the GOAT carry job in NBA history.
Plus it would have been funny at the time to see people such as 3ball's reactions.

Another NBA finals I would modify the result of would be the 2012 finals.
As it would be interesting to see how much the rest of the decade would have been changed had OKC won.
As does Miami blow it up if they lose two straight finals.
Do the Spurs manage to make the finals in 2013 and 2014 if the Thunder keep Harden who killed them in the 2012 WCF.
Does GSW ever become a dynasty if they are constantly battling the big three of Durant, Harden Westbrook every single year in the West.

From what I witnessed? Maybe 2004. Losing that Finals was a punch in the gut.
I thought you were gonna say 1969, if Wilt wins...the way people look at him would be different.

People would look at Wilt way differently if he won in 1970 as he would have been the finals MVP.
As he averaged 23PPG/24RPG/4APG on 62FG% in those finals despite coming off a serious knee injury.
1969 would be nice but it wouldn't help Wilt's legacy as much as winning in 1964 and 1970 would.

2013 as it was a finals realistically that should had been won by other team but due to bad coaching and officiating at the end of game 6 it didn't happen.

I disagree, losing in '69 did great harm to his legacy IMO. He had the better team and the fact that he lost to Russell again who was playing his last series ever has to suck big time.

An interesting one that probably doesn't get brought up that often, 1986. If Hakeem knocks off peak Magic & Bird b2b, then goes on to have that b2b in the 90's, he'd be a top 10 lock, probably close to being top 5. While Bird takes a HUGE hit, probably drops outside the top 10.
And in regards to OP, LeBron knocking off the Spurs at 22 in '07 would've been some GOAT level shit. Ditto if he beat the Warriors in 2018.

I do wonder which single NBA finals Laker and Celtic fans would modify.
I would assume most Laker fans would choose 2008 over 1984 or 1969 due to their love for Kobe.
And I would assume most Celtic fans would choose 1987 or 1985 for Bird.

Losing in 1970 and 1973 did more harm to his legacy than 1969 did as if he won the title in those two years vs New York.
He would have 4 rings and 4 final MVPs and a record of 19 and 2 in the playoff against non-Boston teams.
Lakers were basically cursed in the finals throughout the 60s. Having wilt never changed anything about that.
As a Spur fan - 2013 - Duncan would have 4 FMVPs and 6 rings - that would move him up a bit (it would have been the elusive back-to-back too).
Or if not in the Finals, Manu's foul on Dirk. I believe Spurs would have gone on to win in 06 (Phoenix and Heat - good matchups for the Spurs) - that might have been a 3peat.

The counter argument is, if they win in 2013 I don't know if they come back with the urgency that they did in 2014. They were on a mission that season to make up for giving away the title the year before. Could they have won in 2014 regardless? Sure. But I think losing in 2013 played a big factor in their mindset for that season.
1995 Finals
While the Rockets may have pulled out the series regardless, Nick Anderson missing those free throws at the end of game 1 messed the whole series up. Everybody here in Memphis was a Magic fan solely because of Penny. If the Magic could have won that, Shaq might not have left for LA .

2010 Finals. A second Celtics championship for that group would stop all the talk that the Celtics milk their 2008 championship.
Would also make the best PF debate a little tougher when you factor in a second ring for KG.
2015, because I’d love to see LeBron haters claim he was carried by Timofey Mozgov :lol

That's not what OP asked - If you could modify the result of a SINGLE NBA finals in history, which one would it be? It would not change any of the other Finals.

Yeah, no shit sherlock :lol You're the one who said they'd go b2b, and I don't think it's a certainty that they do if they win in 2013.

It was a 4-0 sweep. It has to be something that was relatively close overall like 1988, 1984, 2005, 2010

Seems like the very thought of 6 rings 4 FMVPs vs (subsequent) 3 rings 3 FMVPs causes shivers to some. Chill - it's hypothetical - not reality

1989 because the Pistons only swept the Lakers because Magic and Byron Scott were out with injuries.
Would have been the Lakers first three-peat.

Huh?
I meant that the IDEA/THOUGHT of Duncan having 6 rings/4 FMVP and Lebron having 3 rings/3 FMVP is not a good one for Lebron fans.

If MJ losses the 96 finals, is he still the undisputed GOAT? Do the bulls still win in 97/98, or is their run "over" after a third straight playoff failure

1979 - Sonics/Bullets two teams that don't really exist anymore...looking at the franchise/star teams from that year
Maravich - Jazz
English - Pacers
Barry/Malone - Rockets
Gervin - Spurs
Erving - 76ers
If somebody was going to get a one-off plenty of better options that year

I dont pretend to modify the result.
Just cancel the draymon green suspension in 2016 and lets see what happens naturally.

2010 Lakers vs Celtics game 7, imagine if Ray Allen actually step up in that game. That big 3 Celtics could have 2 rings.

Refs did a lot to help Cavs in those finals.
Or maybe 2006, same reason.

Nice, you post the single finals Timmy ever lost in. The same finals that took a series of fluke occurrences for the heat to win. Nice, you really got him.
Also, whats the beef with you and WF. I haven't been active for a few years but I never saw this level of enmity between both of you years back especially since you're a Curry fan.

Do you think Spurs come in as hungry as they did in 2014 if they had won 2013? It's possible they do so and they still dominate the heat but I think if Miami lost that series, things the following season would have changed drastically.
