Mavs Legend Dirk Nowitzki Admits He Should Have Retired Sooner

For Nowitzki, he continues to think about whether it was worth playing during the last two seasons of his career. He feels that if he had retired two years sooner, he could participate in more physical activities with his kids—something he says he can't really do at all now. “I keep thinking whether the last two years in the NBA were really worth it. If I had quit two years earlier, I could probably move better today and play soccer with the kids sometimes. I can't do that at all now.”

I know it's not an apples to apples comparison as they were at completely stages in their respective careers and lives, but this reminds me of what D. Rose said several years ago as a very young player, when he got injured and was criticized for saying it.

"I know a lot of people get mad when they see me sit out or whatever, but I think a lot of people don't understand that ...When I sit out it's not because of this year. I'm thinking about long term. I'm thinking about after I'm done with basketball. When I sit out it's not because of this year. I'm thinking about long term. I'm thinking about after I'm done with basketball. Or be at my son's graduation all sore just because of something I did in the past. (I'm) just learning and being smart."

no surprise. I can only imagine the wear-and-tear a 7-footer must experience running up and down the court 50+ times a year at that intensity

human beings that large aren't built to run that often

The regular season should clearly be shorter, but both sides are greedy for money, and more injuries and more wear and tear is the consequence. So when dudes get shit on for sitting out, I have no sympathy. Youre being paid hundreds of millions at this point to go out there and play and youve accepted that. If you wanna play the “health is more important” card then reduce the schedule and leave some money on the table.

Otherwise shut the **** up and get out there.

Too bad he didn't take 2 season sabbaticals. That would've extended his career for sure.

If I'm seeing somebody on the street running the way Dirk ran in games for the last 2 or 3 years of his career, I'm rushing to help and ask if they are ok.

The friggin audacity of jordon extremist alts to claim that there is no such thing as "mileage". :oldlol:
Not only that, but they also have the audacity to claim that jordon's 2 season break was a disadvantage and not an advantage.

We've gotten so much evidence about how much rest helps you and your odds of winning. Curry and Klay have played like 1.5 seasons over their past combined 4 seasons.
That's why I have the Clippers as my "if everyone is healthy" favorites to win it all next season. Not because they have the best player or the best team, which they don't, but because the rest Kawhi and George (who have played 31 out of possible 164 games last season) have gotten for their bodies will give them an unfair advantage over their competition.
