Lebron's step backs almost always come out of the triple threat, or against an opponent who is already playing off him. If Lebron commits to a drive it is almost always going to be a shot at the rim, or a kickout to a shooter. Driving to the basket is Lebron's most elite skill which is why surrounding him with shooters has been mandatory his entire career. If Lebron has more of a pull up midrange game, he would be much more able to negate the effects of bad spacing (which at this point all LeBron teams have)

He tried to become a mid-range scorer in his early/mid-20s and the numbers were horrible, he was below 30% from mid-range (10-16 ft) in the POs from 06-10 and the number has only gone up to ~36% for his career. He was decent on long 2s but not consistent enough to be taking as much of them as he did during his Cavs stint. Teams dared him to shoot mid-range shots for a decade and he really hasn't gotten any better IMO, he's had some high-volume mid-range scoring games in the POs but it's like 1-2 games every Finals run. Now imagine if he developed a GOAT mid-range shot like MJ, he'd actually have won more than 4 and been in actual GOAT convos outside of the trolling ones.
