I didn’t watch a ton of Boston games this season but during the Finals it was fairly obvious to see that Williams had much more defensive impact then Smart.

Horford, anyone? The defensive glue that holds it all together.

I felt like Tatum played better defense too, at least in the playoffs.

Their entire starting line got DPOTY votes. Timelord was leading the DPOTY campaign, but he got injured so the media just kinda looked at the Celtics and chose the next best defensive player. :lol Timelord is unbelievable, you can argue he was the most impactful player in the finals. His +/- was also absurd in terms of Boston did with him on and off the court.

Williams is definitely the best defender on the Cs when healthy. He is pretty injury prone though.

Williams has a major impact but had a hard time staying healthy. Smart got DPoY almost because the national media didn't get where the Celtic defense came from and people tend to give all the credit to one player. But although Williams shot blocking is the hardest thing to replace about the defense I will say that Smart is one of the two true leaders of the team (Horford is the other).

The 80s Celtics big 3 was Bird, Mchale, and Parish.

Dennis Johnson was a role player.

One finals Dennis had 10 blocks in 2 games. These are 7 of them in one:

And in another year he had at least 2 blocks in 6 straight playoff games 5 of them in the finals while winning finals mvp.

Williams to me was not only the most impactful Celtics defender, but he had the most defensive impact out of the the 2 teams in these Finals. His rim protection was impressive to see, even more impressive was that he wasn't 100%. Green was also great on defense in a few games but had 2-3 games where his impact wasn't really felt.

Marc Gasol was the best defender on the 2013 Grizzlies.

Marc Gasol being 2013 DPOY was correct.

Ive been watching a ton of young Dennis Johnson lately and I swear you could make like a 20 minute mix of ridiculous blocks but his dunk highlight reel is 35 seconds. Just didn’t seem to go all out for show which is admirable but his lack of offensive explosive plays hurts the ability to show how special he was. That guy got up like a dunk contest winner and all you got was a couple alleys hed lightly put in.

I had Robert Williams as DPOY. http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?503675-Who-is-your-MVP-DPOY-ROY-amp-6MOY&p=14574554&viewfull=1#post14574554

Smart shouldn't have been DPOY. Although, Smart is also my second least favorite player in the league, so I recognize that I'm a bit biased.

Jazz top 5 D with Gobert. 29th without him. Boston was good defensively without Smart or Williams.

Being on a team of bad defenders doesn’t make the one or two good defenders better than good defenders on teams full of good defenders. It just makes them more likely to have a trackable difference made when they aren’t playing. If somehow prime David Robinson were on a medical related minutes restriction playing behind Gobert the off court numbers wouldn’t be as different. He’d be the same player.

In fairness to Smart a lot of his value is the ability to switch onto bigs and hold his ground. He did pretty well when he got switched onto Giannis. Not many guards could do that.

He is a big key to their ability to switch everything on defense.

Too much flopping though.

I don’t have that much of a problem with smart it just fit the theme I decided on. I didn’t actually make this topic about the Celtics I just thought of the concept and went with them first when it came to mind.

Im not like outraged he won it. I don’t think he should have but it’s not gonna be like an ongoing argument from me.
