Lonnie Walker IV has found a new home. The former Spur has agreed to a one-year, $6.5 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to The Athletics's Shams Charania. He’s the first free agent to leave San Antonio this offseason, but he might not be the last.

It’s no surprise to see Walker continue his career elsewhere. The talented but inconsistent wing was always expected to leave in free agency, but it became obvious he wasn’t on the team’s plans when the front office rescinded the qualifying offer that would have made him restricted. Just hours ago General Manager Brian Wright told local media that the draft, in which the Spurs picked two guards, played a part in making Walker more expendable, bringing more clarity to the situation. All that was left to figure out was what his next team was going to be, and now we have an answer.

The Lakers make sense for Walker, even if the contract — almost exactly the same in terms of money and years as he would have gotten by signing the qualifying offer in San Antonio — seems low. LeBron James’ team lost bench scorer Malik Monk to the Kings in free agency and needed a replacement. Walker should fit that role perfectly and for a fraction of what Monk is making. Surrounded by two stars and a dominant ball handler like Russell Westbrook, Lonnie should be able to pick his spots on offense instead of trying to create his shots, which should help his efficiency. If his three-point shot returns to his career averages and the potential to make a deep postseason run motivates him to try on defense, he could end up being a bargain. If things don’t work out, he gets to re-enter free agency in a year.

Spurs fans would have probably prefer to see Walker pick a different team, but it’s hard to blame him for choosing a place in which he will likely get minutes and find a role. Watching him reach his potential elsewhere would be bittersweet, but it was clearly not going to happen in San Antonio, so parting ways simply makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for everything and good luck in Los Angeles, Lonnie.

check this out lol.

AMIT MANN: OK, so let's move on to a very fun one that I mentioned earlier, Lonnie Walker.

ZACH WILSON: Love it.

AMIT MANN: We all do, but why? But why?

ZACH WILSON: I think a lot of teams love it. I think you mentioned in the intro a guy who's going to have a lot of highlight plays, great athlete. He's going to dunk on people. Solid on the defensive end. He's a guy who's 6'4" as a guard. He would be the type of guy who would be your "microwave scorer off the bench." Obviously, he's not just recognized as oh, yeah, this is just an elite scoring option. He's going to do it in different ways. He's going to blow past guys. He's going to be more of a secondary creator, which I don't know if that's what Toronto wants.

I think he can shoot OK. We haven't seen a ton of him, like he got up to five three-point attempts per game last year. And he shot 31% so that's kind of OK. It's enough to keep a defense honest.

AMIT MANN: The idea is awesome. The idea is perfect because you can just see how-- I mean the shots that he was getting in San Antonio, he shot 31% from three last year, which is a bit of a dip for him. But the shots he would get in Toronto would be very, very clean because of the gravity of Scottie and their ball movement, and Pascal Siakam obviously is one of a terrific passer at his size.

lol. sry he's a laker now. legoat will get him those open looks as i previously mentioned though.

He's an okay 3PT shooter for his career, had a down year from 3 but still had some really good stretches last season. Nice to see the Lakers going after younger players with some upside in this FA.

He kinda sucks. Athletic as hell but hardly ever dunks because he's afraid of any contact. Instead, he opts for weak floaters that rim out most of the time. Consistency is terrible. He'll look like a fringe all-star one game while playing like a G-League player the next four after. Low IQ, especially on defense. Always ball watching and never learned to play within the flow of the offense. He's got a good personality and gifted with great physical tools but never learned to put it together to become anything more than an inefficient bench scorer. His advanced metrics are terrible. Says a lot that he was passed up in the rotation by two players younger than him(Keldon and Vassel).

Yeah, that Zach Wilson guy's a moron. "Solid of the defensive end". :oldlol:

İf he was a solid defender, Spurs would have kept him(6 mil is cheap). He has defensive lapses far too often. Just really low bball IQ on that end of the court. Highlight of his career was probably outplaying Harden in an overtime game against the Rockets when he was a rookie. Great athlete, good locker room guy. Dumb basketball player

There really aren't any better players for how little the Lakers can spend in FA. I like them taking a chance on a young player who's capable of going off from 3. Monk wasn't any different when they got him, though he was coming off a 40% 3PT season (missed almost half the season so not as big of a sample size), yet he struggled from 3 his first 3 years in the league so there was actually a bigger sample size of poor shooting from Monk, yet people weren't saying that he was a poor shooter despite him being mediocre & struggling for years. Lonnie is an excellent replacement.

What does this have to do with Bran?

Monk's career pre-LA: 9/2/2 40%FG 34%3PT
Lonnie's career pre-LA: 9/2/2 41%FG 34%3PT

Lakers replaced one mediocre chucker (who has upside) with another. Lonnie can give them what Monk did last season.

Monk was a lottery pick.

Monk was 11th, Walker 18th, not like there's that much of a gap. Monk had a nice stretch in his last year in Charlotte before injury but was a mediocre shooter for the most of his early years as well. Walker last season had a nice 13-game stretch where he put up 19 ppg and shot 39%3PT on 6.5 3PA with 47%FG as well. It's not the greatest FA signing but it's a nice little gamble I guess, better than if they had picked up Ingles or even Bruce Brown IMO with what the Lakers have right now.

I wasn't happy with Lonnie signing, which I thought was rushed. I ended up being wrong about him though. He has been a solid 3rd option. His defense has been decent as well across several positions.

I hope we can pull off Westbrook trade to possibly Indiana to bolster the starting 5 further. Turner-AD-LeBron-Lonnie-Beverely with Hield providing 3pt shooting off the bench.

It's been 7 games. This isn't nearly the "end".

He's playing really well right now but I would hold off judgement until the all star break. If he's still doing this then? Sure.
