View Full Version : Pressing question with too much backstory. Who is the Twista of the nba?

Only my 35+ brothers will understand without this explanation so….

Mid 90s a new rapper took the summer by storm. And please don’t come tell me Twista was out in the early 90s. I’m not talking about his Guinness book record or his largely ignored demo and semi pro shit. I’m talking big stage. This song drops:

Legendary hook and smooth production but Twista on the back half steals the show. Being of Chicago I was aware he existed and it was known he was the world record holders for fastest talker but he was seen as a gimmick. That showed something different.

25 years before people decided anyone rapping fast is killing it he was a change of pace literally and figuratively. Fast but clear and you could hear him enunciate every word.

Not only did he have the speed but he knew how to actually put a song together as his first major album showed. You could listen to Twista for energy. You could **** bitches to Twista without complaint which is rare for what would be called a “Gangster” rapper at the time. You can play

Or Emotions with women or male friends. Just good all around riding music.

His unique style and well rounded song making make me feel like he might be the next big thing. We had a potential goat in the making.

But….

With time we saw it wasn’t to be.

Its not that he got worse. He was still as good as he was. He had a couple big hits. Overnight celebrity and Slow Jamz even the younger of you should remember. Or at least you would if someone played them.

But we went from unique maybe change the game future goat to just having a couple all star seasons(albums) and having a more niche appeal instead of going on to revolutionize the game.

The basketball parallels are easy to make. I want a guy who(to you) seemed to represent something new and different. Someone you had high hopes for how they might change how _____ was played but it turned out the game didn’t change around them…they just melted into it.

I feel there are several possible examples but instead of my usual way of brainstorming like 9 options I’ll leave it to you to see if we are on the same page.

So tell me….

Who is the Twista of the nba? Now or all time. Whoever comes to mind. Who could have changed it all….but just never did and settled into a middling career?

With that description I feel like Wiggins fits the bill. Particularly if he continues to get better defensively and on the glass.

But as a prospect? Canadian Uber athlete with an aesthetic game.

Maybe Yao?

Ralph Sampson
Bingo.
Or maybe Bob McAdoo. A big with a shot.
We're just now starting to see Magic size guards take over.

I have like ten names in mind but Sampson was my obvious #1. I forgot Mcadoo though. The crazy shooting bigs didn’t really follow him for a generation:

When KP first came out did he have that feel for you? Or was the shooting big too well established already?

McAdoo wasn't coming down the court like Sampson with the ball. To be fair, Wilt was doing that but as a Globetrotter. They wouldn't let him do half the stuff in the league they'd let him do for the Globetrotters.

Wilt could do all that and he was salty at the young centers who were allowed. He went off on commentators praising David Robinson for leading the break in one of his books. Saying he could do that but he was a center and shouldn’t have been….and David shouldn’t either. Talking about the fast break fundamentals and lanes and all and how he should be trailing.

Came off extra salty even for Wilt who at times seemed to be a being of pure sodium.

Wow McAdoo looks like KD before KD.

What did they call it back then, hot dogging.

They probably looked at Joe Fulks like a weirdo when he was shooting jump shots instead of set shots.

Westbrook

One of the most athletic, if not most athletic point guard, in NBA history. A triple double machine. An iron man.

He could have changed the game. However, poor decision making, shot selection, and not really developing a consistent jump shot held him back.

twista had a lot of big tunes. one of the first big rappers out of chicago.

and that speed with the delivery was his claim to fame as an mc very quick delivery and did it with style. I knew about him and his tracks early.

it would have to be a star with a nice ceiling and a short prime but still played in the league for a while as a role-player.

Coleman definitely fits. 6’10” bruising athletic beast prototype but with wing handles, 3 point range, and nice passing off the dribble?

He was supposed to usher in a new kind of big and it just didn’t happen.
