Right wrong or indifferent, I think that's what happened.

This is how multiple players that were still on the 2018 Cavs had ended up getting overpaid over the years.

Notice how he always takes these 4 year deals or less with player options along the way to maintain leverage.

He's not breaking his contract he's just making sure he has a certain teammate that he wants with the leverage possibly leaving as a free agent gives him.
