View Full Version : Is there anything in this country to be optimistic about anymore?

As an American (not your personal life)... what are you optimistic about?

With the amount of uncertainty this country is currently experiencing... the only thing that seems to be certain is that things will continue to get progressively worse.

So I'm asking the ISH community, specifically the democratic supporters... what is it that you are optimistic about? Please enlighten me.

There is always room for optimism.

I’m optimistic that- the silent majority is beginning to strike back

This administration won’t last forever

Tough times make tough people, even if some want to go backwards, after moving through this tough time there is a lot of room for upward momentum

10% of the population has a millionaire net worth.

I have a better question "Doomsday". What the hell would it take for you to be optimistic? You could probably inherit a billion dollars and still spend your life dwelling in pessimism.

The funny thing about liberalism is everybody is a victim I thought?

Sounds like a very conservative point of view.

Wasn't even trying to make this thread about me... I'm just talking about being an American.

Democrats have a tendency to take political discussions and make it personal.

So the fact that 10% of the population is a millionaire is what gives you optimism? That's what should keep the American Dream alive and well? What about the Wealth Gap? That doesn't matter?

See I was having a political discussion with a cowoker of mine, without making anything personal...

and we both agreed that America peaked in the 80's and 90's, The American Dream was alive and well in those two decades. Politics weren't near as dominate as they are today.

Then somewhere after Bush entered the script... politics started to become a little bit more mainstream... and as technology improved it's been downhill ever since.

and after Trump, with the dominance of big tech social media, it's clearly only going to become more & more divisive politically from here on out.

Doesn't matter what I think, what's important is what the masses think, and the masses are worse than the politicians themselves at this point.

So why is any of this important? Because at some point... The idiocracy will become too much.

I give it another 7 years, but you will see many urban communities become less and less attractive to live in... if they aren't already.

Just like people are escaping certain Blue States to live in Red ones... Eventually people will just want to escape blue areas in general, that's how bad I see it becoming.

I say give it 7 years... but I'll bump this thread up next Summer and see how optimistic we're all feeling, Another year of Biden is a scary thought.

https://brilliantmaps.com/wp-content/uploads/United_States_presidential_election_results_by_cou nty_2020.png

If there is anything to be optimistic about... it's the fact that I'm on a little blue island surrounded by a sea of Red. That does give me some optimism from a political standpoint.

But even Dallas will start to have issues in time.

I mean when Biden can't stop talking about food shortages... and that food shortages are going to be "a real thing"... hard to have much optimism for America.

but as for my personal life?... I feel just fine.

according to my stats...

330 million divided by 22 million is about 1 in 15 people.

Ain't no way 85% of Americans are satisfied with their personal lives... especially if 81 million people voted for Biden... satisfied with their personal lives compared to what? living somewhere else? like Mexico or prison? Ok, then maybe I can see 85% being satisfied.

But you're only furthering Conservative talking points... How many times has Candace Owens told liberals... You're not oppressed!!!

Also your chart proves my point... People Agree, there is little to be optimistic about in terms of the USA's current direction.... and for good reason.

And to add to another point I made earlier... notice how it peaked in the 80's and 90's? An era when most people were proud to be American. All went down hill after Bush Jr.

Obama and Trump both gave us little glimpses of American Spirit ... Biden bringing us all back down to reality.

At the end of the day I can count my blessings... so can most Americans... still doesn't excuse the fact the Democrats have taken a gigantic $hit on the country.

You literally just said that you were satisfied with your life.

Ask any poster in here and you get the same response.

"Oh who me? No my life is great! But everyone else is f@#ked! The country is going to shit!". "I'm okay, but you're not".

And that is what that chart illustrates.

You can see during the housing bubble in 2009 it was even worse. Yet everyone was still sitting comfortably at their computer typing about how bad it's going to be.

My suggestion is eat some healthy organic food and support your local farmers. That will make you feel better.

your point is that it will not ever go below a certain number? No matter what roughly 80-85% of Americans are always going to feel personally satisfied?

I think what you're failing to see is how people feel about America's future. A future that hasn't happened yet "The Direction of the US"

Just because we're still living comfortably now... doesn't guarantee us that Americans will continue to live comfortably.

but to even try to compare our current situation as being in the same ball park as 1992 or 2009 is ridiculous... our little Post Trump/Biden CV19 era has reached uncharted territory, and we're beginning to witness things destabilize.

Our Debt to GDP ratio hasn't exceeded 100% since WWII... We've clearly maxed out the credit card.

https://historyincharts.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/US-National-Debt-to-GDP-Ratio-by-Year-1024x1024.png

But let me guess... this is a sustainable path? No matter what... that 85% personal satisfaction rating will remain steady forever.

If that's the case... it won't be due to economic success... but hey, maybe you're right? Maybe everyone will always be relatively happy and carefree.

Texas didnt give us the worst president of our lifetimes... that president was given to us by the CIA and old wall street money.

The Bush family is from New England.

Prescott Bush (grandfather) was a big time NYC banker and lived in NY, CT, and Maine.

GHW grew up in Greenwich CT, went to the finest private schools on the east coast, and only moved to Texas to invest his family money in the oil industry there, and ultimately TX was his primary residence for a grand total of about 10 years of his early life and a couple of his twilight years (for comparison GHW spent 30+ years living in DC)

GW was born in Greenwich, then moved to TX where he went to a public school for a few years... then he was sent to an elite New England boarding school (where he was head cheerleader), then he went to Yale to learn how to be a skull and bone, and then he went to Harvard for an MBA.

Not to rain on your parade but the way stocks have been this year is that when it goes up x%, the very next day it goes down 2x or more. My stock portfolio is down 30 something percent YTD, I don't even bother looking at it any more. I just reinvest all my dividends, that's about all the movement I have done for the last handful of months. HODL!

Personally I am optimistic about things like the fact that the vast majority of americans are good people, or the fact that a non trivial percentage of the population (at least 10%, probably more) are able to at least partially see through the matrix reality created by the media and mainstream culture... the stock market is just a graph of rich peoples feelings.
