View Full Version : You knew the 90’s were watered down because the Knicks were routinely a top seed

No shade on all y'all who worship 90's basketball, but you'll never see it again because the players in the NBA were waaaaay less skilled back then.

Don't believe me?

Think back to the Knicks in the 90's. That Patrick Ewing team would routinely end up one of the top seeds in the East, even though they had NO ONE who could consistently hit a jump shot.

Now, even power forwards and centers are shooting 35% from three.

Imagine a guy like Muggsy out there getting cooked night after night by guys like Dame, Steph, Ja, Kyrie, etc...

It would be hard to watch.

Ewing consistently hit a lot of jump shots. They played great D. Had an all time great coach. That era was closer to football than the NBA of today

The Knicks had a roster loaded with NON-SCORING power forwards, oakley, mason, smith, mcdaniels. Only people who could give you more then 12 a game on those teams were Ewing and possibly Starks or Derek Harper.

The late 80s Pistons were even worse in my opinion. Imagine a team with Rodman and Lumbieer getting significant playing time in today's game?

The scoring was terrible. Ewing had no help

Scottie pippen was the best player during that decade. Helped lift the 94 bulls to 55 rs wins and the playoffs despite the absence of the famous dad killer due to gambling suspension.

It’s crazy 3ball knocks Pippen for scoring 20ppg while Ewing would die for a 2nd option to score 15ppg lol

Xavier Mcdaniel could drop 20 a game easily, those Knicks would beat todays Celtics.

Xavier had Pippen absolutely shook in 92. He was getting Piston flashbacks.

it's why he desperately tries to compare pip's stats to current players and not the bulls opponents second options in pretty much every topic.

At least he was able to lead his team to the conference finals even if he didn't have his ball hog chucking first option (ala mitchell) anymore!

Pretty sure you can win games by playing defense and those Knicks were one of the best defensive teams in nba history while having an Mvp caliber player in Patrick Ewing (when healthy)

Those Knicks played tough and physical while having skilled defenders at every position. They even had a Draymond type player coming off the bench (Mason).

Mcdaniel could hardly "drop 20 a game easily". All he had was a solid 15 feet jumper. If he was 1st option on a team he probably could give you 15-17PPG, maybe.

What are you talking about, the 90's Knicks although inside focused were more dynamic then you're giving credit for. Starks, Hubert Davis, Doc Rivers all capable of shooting threes - even Greg Anthony who was at most times dicey but still launched them.

And then you had Ewing, Oak, Mason, Smith all with at the minimum decent 18 foot jumpers which was an "outside" shot back then considering how packed the paint was.

Korver made the ASG as a 12 ppg scorer in 2015 lmao

Knicks had 1st or 2nd best defense + a top 10 player in the league in Ewing in most of the 50+ win seasons..

The best version of the 90s Knicks (3 all-stars on team) was the exact year jordon took his vacation.
And that version couldn't beat a team whose second leading scorer in the playoffs averaged 13.8 points on .376 shooting. No, that is not a typo. Just the 90s talent pool.

Depends on the rules. The rules since the early 2000s was to open up the game for perimeter players. With older rules the Knicks where great. Just imagine if Ewing plays with a player as good was Scottie Pippen. They probably would have one a championship and Ewing wouldn't be so underrated.
