RIP to one of the Greatest to ever do it. He paved the way for many black players and transcended race. Promoted the team concept. And was one of the few athletes that I can think of that was respected by everyone. I never heard a bad thing said about him. We lost a great one. Not just athletically, but a great Man.

1 healthy L his entire life from high school till retirement. 16 rings in 19 years and it would probably be 18 if the ncaa let freshmen play back then and he wasn’t hurt his sophomore season nba finals. 55 wins in a row in college. The largest pre dream team Olympic margin of victory. 11 rings in the nba. Retired his nba team missed the playoffs and you never even heard of the school he won back to back ncaa titles with. He had the victory infinity stone and every case for anyone else as the greatest winner in major American sports is only possible after choosing to disregard his existence.
Pioneer and a(maybe the) goat and his city literally broke into his house and shit in his bedroom because he moved to a white neighborhood.
That whole generation never got their due and the people making hundreds of millions off the league they made survive barely pay them any respect. Bill should have a statue at the league offices and be one of the few numbers retired league wide.

Indeed, he paved the way for many black players to join a league whose majority ownership a full 60 years later is just 1/30 black.
A true pioneer of wealth consolidation in the hands of an elite few.

RIP to one of the all-time greats, and a person who went way beyond just basketball. He had integrity, courage in the face of social injustice, dignity, and honor. He was a hell of a winner in life as well as basketball. I'm glad he lived to a ripe old age of 88 surrounded by friends and family. Truly a sad day, but also one in which we can acknowledge a legend in both sports and in life.

This is such a glaring example of how willingly people let corporate mass media shape their perspective.
Russell basically fought for blacks to be included on the white owners’ plantation. Thats what integration was about, and it was pushed as a virtue BY the people in charge.
Russell was fighting for social justice in 1965, yet in 2019 the black community was apparently in such dire dysfunction we had massive worldwide protests about it.
Still today NBA owners are only 1/30 black, and there are virtually no major corporations with black CEOs. Blacks own less and less with each passing decade.
Russell fought for blacks not to own their own leagues, communities, and affairs. He fought so that a few of highly visible blacks could get big checks from white bean-counting billionaires in order to placate the rest at the bottom.
The media tells you that’s progress and you believe it.
Fascinating.

Rest in Paradise to a great man, who happened to play a good game of basketball. The man was "the" winner in sports. Period. As a black man I've always admired him for having the ability be great in hostile environments even in his home city. If youve never faced the type of racism directed at black men maybe its not a big deal to you. He gave a key to the city back to the mayor after being refused service in a restaurant. Led a boycott another occasion for the same reason. He was outspoken against racism in a time where it was dangerous to do so. He was once quoted about racism in the game and said : "you play 2 blacks at home, 3 on the road, and 5 when you're behind." He declined to attend his hall of fame enshrinement because he felt it an insult to other African American players who should have been there before he was, he was the 1st black player to be inducted. 1st black coach. I'll miss seeing him present the trophy this year. RIP legend.

RIP to a legend. Mr. Russell sat in the front row seat of the MLK Jr's famous "I have a dream" speech in DC. He was at the Cleveland summit supporting Ali as one of the spokespeople. He was outspoken concerning civil rights stuff. He was one of the greatest winners in sports' history. He changed the game. Truly a class act as well. He lived a life worthy of respect.

One of the things that suck apart from the great basketball knowledge and conversations that Bill was able to tell is that we won't be able to hear his laugh anymore. Bill had one of the funniest laughs ever. He could make people a mile away laugh with him. :(

Basketball players live along time , the entire 1992 Dream is still with us, if it was 12 Pro Wrestlers popular in 1992, 3 or 4 would be alive now.

His first book Second Wind was an eye-opener for me. I grew up an hour south of Boston in the prime years of Bird worship. My dad was a shameless Larry fanboy, but maintains to this day that Russell is the greatest Celtic ever and I'm right there with him.
I never got to see him play, but I wish I could have shaken his hand just once and told him how Second Wind impacted my life.
Classic photos, with master auerbach.

RIP Bill Russell
Most people can't comprehend the impact that this man had on the game. 11 rings is the single greatest achievement in NBA history maybe sports history period and he was the most important player on his team for arguably all 11 of them. He also fought for racial equality when the races weren't equal under the law. At least today it is better. There is prejudice and biases and institutional racism but the law protects the rights of every race and Bill Russell was on the forefront of that.
