View Full Version : When did you first realize LeBron was the GOAT?

For me it was 2016. Vastly outgunned LeBron pulled a miracle by leading everyone in everything in a 3-1 deficit come-back

Without knowing the roster, rules of the era, or coaching in place? There are about 7 players I’ve watched at an age to know what I’m seeing that I’d consider taking over Lebron. I’m only fairly sure about 4 of them though.

If this is based on who you've seen live, my guess would be

Jordan
Kareem
Bird
Magic
Hakeem
Shaq

That makes 6, I'm honestly kinda stumped on the 7th. Duncan? Kobe? Someone old school like Dr. J?

It’s interesting because as a kid you are amazed at any professional athlete. Hell I remember being amazed at the Harlem globetrotters lol

When I noticed how insecure MJ stans were about him, even though they had barely seen him play (not that they had they watched much bball outside of the 90s, mind you).

I knew it was his destiny.

2013 is when it became evident that he would become GOAT if he avoided injuries.
2016 is when he became the GOAT player.
2020 is when he obtained the GOAT career.

2011 sealed the deal for me (and apparently for the vast majority of NBA fans) that GOAT tier candidates don't shit the bed THAT BAD ever, even before that, his meltdowns in 2008, 2009 and 2010 were bad enough but I was still willing to give him a pass, obviously I won't hold 2007 against him even though plenty of people do since it was his first Finals... I was more than willing to be a witness, but I all I have seen is lots of empty stats and very few chips and accolades considering his longevity. Great career over all no doubt though, clearly there have been more dominant players than him so he can not be the GOAT. Also, I'm willing to give him a pass for his utter failures recently considering he's an old man but GOAT standards are tough, I can see how others would also hold that against him too.

It's really quite simple and no need to make long-winded excuses for his shortcomings and all the mental gymnastics his stans have to come up with :confusedshrug:

I believe most of the people who have Lebron as GOAT never actual saw MJ play...MAYBE they saw Wizards MJ.

But yeah, I would have Lebron as GOAT too IF I never watched MJ play on the Bulls. Even now we have tons of footage and stats to support MJ, but most new age fans simply don't want to accept what came before them. Of course that's pretty much what happens for every new generation in most sports.

Exactly, most who have seen both say MJ all day but then these kids claim it's nostalgia when it's not...we can say they speak out of ignorance though because it's literally true, they weren't there :lol

Lebron played with Shaq who won league mvp and 3 finals mvp's and lost in round 2. Lebron played with Peak Duncan who had won 2 league mvp's and 3 finals mvp's and won bronze medal. Lebron played with Peak Wade who won finals mvp and got outplayed by Jason Terry. Lebron played with Derrick Rose who won mvp under age 30 which was the same as Kevin Durant who won mvp under 30 while both were on Golden State and Cleveland. Lebron played with mulitple PER leaders as well and now Russell Westbrook a league mvp winner and more triple doubles than Oscar Robertson. Yet despite all of that Lebron lost with all of them.

http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?500416-Why-did-Pelinka-surround-Lebron-with-a-bullshit-roster
He has peak Anthony Davis, the best player on the 2020 squad and the reason the Lakers did anything as the 2019 Lakers missed the playoffs and 2021 Lakers lost in round 1 when AD wasn't around. He has Prime Melo who won a scoring title and all time leader in scoring for the Olympics. He has Dwight Howard a 3x DPOY and a guy who beat Lebron without HCA. He has Westbrook who is the modern day Oscar Robertson and also won league mvp along with average a Triple Double 4 years in a row. He also has Rondo who is a hall of famer.

Why didn't he play it against Dwight Howard in 2009 when Dwight was dominating http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?459570-How-is-it-even-possible-to-lose-to-Dwight-Howard-in-a-series-with-HCA/page10? Or against Duncan or KG or Dirk? Why did he run away from KD a guy at his position?

http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?494830-Difference-between-Lebron-and-Tmac
Both 0-2 with HCA against 50+ win teams until they joined forces with someone who won as the man. Also won bronze medals.

Tmac lost to Utah in 2007 while Lebron was losing to a career loser in Dwight Howard and also Carlos Arroyo in the Olympics with peak Tim Duncan on his squad despite playing more minutes than Hakeem even played on the 1996 Olympic team.

We know LeBron historically beat carbon copy MJ (Kobe) by a good amount. If LeBron played in the 80s and 90s MJ would have been an afterthought. MJ would still be great but not the same marketing machine for the NBA he was back then. Same category as Drexler basically.
